My experience with Dr. Kuri and his team have been very good. I was always afraid of doctors and I feel really good about my choice. The hostpital was amazing, felt like a luxury Hotel, The surgery was great no problems. So far so good!

I finally met Dr Kuri the night before my surgery, at about 7:30 when we had a group meeting. He spoke very good english, was extremely nice, down-to-earth and FUNNY! I knew immediately that I made the right decision when I chose him to do my surgery!

rnrnI cannot say enough good things about Dr. Kuri and his staff. My banding experience was wonderful. I have even been back to TJ twice for fills. The only down side I've experience by choosing to go to Mexico for my surgery is aftercare. I have had a problem finding a local Dr. that would provide me with fills. I finally found one 4 hours away that does fills for me when I can't make it all the way back to TJ. Dr. Kuri probably has the best bedside manner of any Dr. I've ever had in my life. He treats you like a precious little baby.....

I found Kuri and his team to be professional and friendly. My experience in Mexico was good. My experieces after getting back home were very different. I found a local nurse trained to give fills. She had a hard time finding the port and it was never in the same spot. After about 6 months, one day I started having terrible stomach pain. My husband took me to the hospital. Ater being in the hospital 2 days they told me know one in the wichita area was willing to do surgery. This was after they called my Insurance company and was told they wouldn't pay for anything to do with the lapband. My doctor found someone in Topeka who was willing to help me knowing that my insurance wouldn't pay . Bernita Bernstein, M.D. is the reason I am alive today.rnShe took me into surgery right away and removed the lap band. The band had slipped down and was rubbing a hole in my stomach. Doctor Bernstein said there was no indication it had ever been stiched in place.rnIt cost about 10 thousand to have the band put on and 30 thousand for having it removed.rnI am still paying for both and will be for years .rnI would consider having it done again but only with a doctor I could depend on close by.

A very nice and caring man. He has done many surgeries and I had complete confidence in him. He answered all of our questions when we met the evening before surgery and went over all of the dos and don'ts of the band. His office also called after a week to check in and see how I was doing. If I were to do it again I would go back to home without a doubt.rnrnThe only thing I didn't care for in the whole experience was actually the nurses at the hospital itself (not Dr. Kuri's people). The were nice enough but not the most responsive. I think part of the problem was a langauge barrier but even with a dictionary I had to ask 2-3 times sometimes to get what I needed (not medication, they were very good on that front).

Dr. Kuri is great. He is warm and caring and makes you feel you are in very good hands. He seems like a kindly grandfather type. I knew about him from a friend who had been banded before me and he lived up to all her glowing references of him and then some. His office staff was super kind and nice, they all seemed quite knowledgeable. They gave lots of information and I felt well informed. Dr. Kuri made rounds and checked on me, he also had a good question and answer time before surgery. At that time any and all concerns are addressed and he stresses that the band is a tool but that you must be willing to comply or you may as well save your money. I appreciated that. Both his surgical competence and his bedside manner are great. I might add that I flew home on a Sunday and I had a question before I was to go home. Not only did his business cared phone number go to his home but he met me at the hospital to look at my incision before I flew home. That is incredible and I can't reccommend him enough!

Dr. Kuri is a very nice gentleman, and he was helpful to me as I went to have the surgery alone and he actually drove me to the border to catch the train to the airport. His wife actually picked me up from the airport when I arrived before surgery. As I reflect back on that experience, I think he was very thoughtful. I work with doctors and surgeons, so I know how moody they can get, especially surgeons. But Dr. Kuri has been nothing but kind and encouraging for treatment. He is quite a facilitator. My opinion of him has not changed, but my desire for better aftercare and follow up became important to me. I needed to be channeled into a meaningful support group, and a medical or social professional who could see me, councel me, do my fills possibly, and monitor my healthy weight loss. I have been \"on my own\" for four years. I finally have a good fill and I am following a health weight loss diet and I am active in a support group. I am losing weight again after regaining 45 pounds. This happened after I found a place that would do my fills and follow me in the weight loss program. Anyway, Dr. Kuri's staff was very gentle and kind, although sometimes it was frustrating to not know what they were saying in Spanish. The fill center is very professional and efficient. Unfortuneately, I did tend to feel like I was on a conveyer belt, and no one actually sat down to dialog with me about whether I was meeting my goals or not. So, the least I would like about Dr. Kuri is that he is so busy, he just isn't available to me. Therefore in his system, he should have an arrangement where his patients would see a nurse-counselor or somebody supportive in the treatment modality. Future patients should know that they need to get an infrastructure set up for aftercare in their home town, and there should be some plan of care and goal setting. At least when I had the surgery and fills, there was no aftercare plan or support group. I finally found a forum of lapbanders done by Dr. Kuri, but I found it frustrating and uninforming. There were many questions and insecurities, and few answers. The risks of surgery were well addressed. My overall rating of Dr. Kuri is 8 out of 10. I feel surgical competence is absolutely paramount; but bedside manner is what makes a provider a 10 instead of an 8.
