Alexian Brothers Medical Center (COE) Hospital
I was not really impressed with this hospital. I was kept in recovery until 3AM, after an 11:30 AM surgery the previous morning, because there were no beds available. I finally was put into a room. I was watched closely, however, I did not get any rest. There was way too much movement going on for any rest. The hospital was also very warm.
Overall, my experience was outstanding. And I'm not one to give praise freely, especially to health care providers. As with most things there was one nursing asst. that was less than wonderful but that was the exception. The only other thing was the floor I was on was very old and needs some renovation. One of my nurses was pretty upset when the water was cut off on part of the floor.
I loved Dr.Kane, Jr. from the first time I saw him at the seminar. He was equally personable at my consultation asking me a lot of questions on what I wanted & expected. I never felt rushed like I had at other dr's offices. Everyone at the hospital was exceptional. I can't say enough about the care I received on the 4th floor. And believe me, I know from experience because I spent 7 days 2 weeks later on 2 different floors and they didn't compare. The nurses, especially Diane were exceptional. The technision who helped me with my first shower, though I can't remember her name, I will never forget her kindness and compassion. I think rooming with others who have had the same surgery is a great idea. We compared a lot of notes. Even the cleaning girl that came in every day was very pleasant.
Can't beat free valet parking! The nurses were very helpful with my recovery and tracking down the army of doctors who needed to approve my release. The table for the upper GI only supports 300 pounds, so I had to stand for the exam both pre-op and post-op. I had a morphine pump after the surgery in ICU which was my best friend in the world. I hate being woken up at 3am to have my blood drawn. Couldn't they wait until 4am when my nightmares kicked in? All in all, I had no trouble with any of my care during my stay.
I have not had surgery yet, but have gone through the pretesting. One thing I noticed is that the Nutritionists are thorough and talk about things like the importance of getting the right kind of calcium (citrate, rather than carbonate, because carbonate is not absorbed by postop pouches).
I have not found hospital or private Nutritionists who specialize in working with gastric bypass patients. We are still a fairly new population and not much research has been done on the long-term physical effects of the surgery.
Does anyone know of a nutritionist specializing in gastric bypass in the Chicago area? (or even somewhere else; I'd ask my questions via long-distance telephone call)
The nurses were beyond fantastic. They worked hard and were very compassionate. I am so glad I was to stay there. I built wonderful relationships and I will send them some flowers for the day, afternoon and evening shifts. They deserve it! :) THANK YOU GUYS! I love you Alexian Brother's Nurses! ps..and the PCTs.
