I went to the seminar on 12/2/03 here at Memorial Medical Center and met both Dr.Coates and Dr. Coirin. They were both great. My husband & my support team (Teri & Monica) picked the surgeon. They all seemed to think Dr.Coates was more hands on and would be the best. Good thing they choice him because I couldn't decide. They were both GREAT. They presented a ton of information and a whole hour of question time. They were very upfront about the risks and benefits and that they surgery is NOT for everyone. They didn't try to talk into having the surgery. It was very nice.

I met Dr Coates at the Siminar in July. He stayed after and answered any questions you might have regarding WLS. He is friendly and has a good sense of humor. two things I feel are very important in a Doctor. His office staff is good, but very young, Dr Coates practice has grown so fast I think it got a little overwhelming for all of them. I would like to see a post-op work in the office, It takes one to know one, kinda thing. Kindered hearts, someone who can understand the crazyness of the journey.
All in all I'm very pleased with my dession to have this surgery, I'm extremly pleased with the surgeon I choose. I've have never heard anyone say a non-postive word about Dr Coates. and you'd never hear one from me either. I would highly recommend Dr Patric Coates as Your Surgeon.
How would I rate him? 10
Thank You very much Dr. Coates

I first heard about Dr. Coats from a peer who was working closely with him to develop the Bariatric Program at DHM (Doctors Hospital Manteca). My first impression was "he's serious about the surgery". I thought about having the surgery for over a year. During that time I researched the risks and benefits. When I made my up my mind to have the surgery I made an appointment with Dr. Coats. My appointment date was changed 2 times due to scheduling conflicts. I did see him approx. 3 weeks from the time of my initial contact with his office. The staff is polite and takes the time to answer questions that I am sure they answer all day every day. You would never be able to tell by the tone of their voices. On the day of my appt. I was so excited that I hardly slept a wink the night before. My husband accompanied me, thank goodness for his support. The office is very comfortable and inviting. I did not have to wait any longer than I have waited in the past to see a physician. When I was taken to the exam room the assistant weighed me(I hated that part), took a before picture and vital signs. She was very pleasant. When Dr. Coats entered the room he addressed my husband and I with a concerning tone. Because I had done my homework and studied up about the surgery I felt like I had a handle on what to expect. I was suprised to find out that there was a 5% chance of death. The description of what the surgery entailed was fantastic. He brought it down to a level that was very understandable. The picture he drew of the stomach & intestines were a great visual aid. As for the aftercare program we discussd the importance of dietary suppliments in the form of vitamins and excercise. I did not feel rushed in the least. His manner is relaxed which provided a secure enviroment in which to ask questions. Since my appointment on Sept. 12, 2003 I have not heard anything from my insurace company (Pacific Care). The psy. eval took 3 weeks to be dictated and sent to Dr. Coats office, which delayed my request for the surgery to be sent to Pacific Care. Dr. Coats office promised to send in the request for my surgery on Monday Oct. 6, 2003. Now I wait. Please wish me luck.

My first impression of Dr. Coates was, He's a very friendly and very informative man. He told it like it was. As far as his office staff, they were kind of difficult to deal with. I will refer my Dr. to anyone. His bedside manner was awesome. As far as him in surgery, I didn't have any pain. And still I have none. If it were'nt for my incisions, i'd swear he did nothing.. God Bless you Dr. Coates, your wonderful. I highly respect you. I thank God for allowing me to travel 3 hrs. for the best care ever. And I will be on the next train smoking for my next appointment. ~God is good~

I met Dr. Coates for the first time this moring and boy was I impressed! I started off getting a little miffed because my appointment was suppose to be at 8:40am and I didnt see him until after 10:00am but I now under stand why the wait. He sat down and explained everything to my mother and myself. And drew diagrams and explained the risks and the benefits to us which took over 20 minutes! Then he was happy to answer any questions we had. Then I got my "Before picture" taken and then I talked about scheduling with the nurse. He is very compationate and understanding, and completly and utterly thourogh I highly recommend him to anyone. So after I have had my surgery I can totally say I love Dr. Coates. Even though I got the scare of a life time by him making me have a 2nd surgery on day two I know it is because he was on the ball and right on top of the what ifs? I have complete faith in Dr. Coates and if you are choosing a surgeon in the area, he should be your #1 pick!!

I went to the orientation and look forward to meeting him for a consultation on Sept. 16. My consult actually happened early. I met with his Assistant Eric at first then Dr. Coates came in and explained things and just made sure that I felt comfortable about the surgery. He is a deffinate people person. He really makes you feel like you made the right choice with going with him as a surgeon. He has an absolutely wonderful bedside manner.

His information seminars are very informative. He is very patient with everyone's questions. At the consultation he was wonderful. He made me feel totally at ease, probably the first time I ever visited a doctor and didn't feel like I had to apologize for being overweight. He has a great sense of humor butis equally concerned that you know all the pros and cons of the surgery. His explanations are thorough and easy to understand. On the down side his waiting room is extremely crowded and next time I will bring a book as I had to wait over an hour past my appointment time, but once I got in I was never rushed.
