My first impression of Dr. Choban was very pleasing. She was very nice, and answered my questions in detail. I was nervous to be there, but as the consultation went on, I was very happy. I was answering questions with the first nurse, and after she was done and was getting ready to go get Dr. Choban, she said I needed to smile pretty because I was going to start a new life, and it made me feel like they really care. Dr. Choban explained the surgury very well, and in detail, but she didn't emphasize after care that much. The office staff are very nice, and I would prefer Dr. Choban to other people considering surgury. Overall, she is a very good Dr., and I'm pleased that she'll be the one that does my surgury.
Post Surgery 1 year - 6-11-02
Dr. Chobin saved my life. Not only did she save my life, but she enabled me to achieve a quality of life I have NEVER known before.
Immediately I warmed to Dr. C. - her family values are intact and the fact that she made the outfit she was wearing (exquisite!) revealed her sewing skills - so I had little doubt about her ability to attach my parts after she re-routed them. (Plus, she's an adjunct prof. at my alumni, OSU)
My initial impression has only been enhanced by Dr. Choban's thorough, efficient, and on-target follow - up consultations.
Many of the staff have undergone the surgical process themselves, so the information they gave me was valid and poignant. ALL of the hospital folks were incredible. I had to be careful to not laugh toghether with them = blow my incision!! :o)
Like best - She is businesslike and possess the essence of a good teacher. I understood the procedure after she drew a diagram on a dry-erase board and, in detail, described the process. She answered all my questions and laughed at my nervous attempts at humor.
Like least - her confidence in me; at the time I deemed it to be misplaced.
AFTER care has been amazing...I was given loads of information to read, discussed my diet, etc. with nutritionist - BREATHING as a preventative measure (post-op. pneumonia) was taught and reinforced consistently. After returning home I had phone calls every other day from staff to check on me.
Risks - were addressed clearly, I had done extensive research and was prepared with questions, too.
Overall, Dr. Choban is going to be the person who has, quite literally, saved my life. She is an amazing person.
The highest rating is what I would recommend.
Her surgical competence far outshines bedside manner issues because the team of support staff wrapped so tightly around me, there was little, really, the Doc. could do. She examined my incision, gave me reminders about what to do after I arrived home. Again , the "TEAM" approach to my surgery made me feel completely safe and in most competent hands.
My personal first impression of Dr Choban was a great one. I really appreciated her straight forword attitude, no sugar coating of anything. She gave me the pros and cons of the surgery right upfront, including the risks and benefits. She also stressed the need for aftercare and followups. The office staff was also very competent and friendly. I had taken all my paperwork and medical history with me to the appointment and they helped me fill out the papers and took care of submitting them. I would rate Dr Choban and staff at a 9 out of 10 as nobody is perfect, but, they are about as close as you can get.
Post-Op update: Dr Choban was absolutely wonderful. She done a wonderful job, the incision looks great, her beside manner was very motivating, and if you needed to talk to her she was there as soon as she could find a moment. May God bless her many times over for my new start as a thinner person.
BTC seemed to be a little unorganized at my initial consult, but Dr. Choban did give me her full attention when the staff realized i was still sitting in the consult room 1 hour later. (My appointment was set for 2 pm, I didn't get taken back to the consult room for 2 hours, then the added wait of 1 hour, total of 3.) Dr. Chaban fully answered my questions as well as those of my support persons who were with me. I have spoken with others who have had Dr. Choban as their surgeon and all were quite pleased with her skills and bedside manner. No date yet, but should be hearing something within the next week or two. Dr. Choban emphasizes aftercare as ongoing and critical to the success of the surgery. She gives you realistic information regarding what the surgery can and cannot solve. She emphasizes self motivation as being a key factor in weight loss success, as well as the aftercare that will be received through BTC. She did discuss fully the risks of surgery and interventions to prevent most complications associated with this type of surgery. Update! April 27: Surgery date scheduled for June 24 at BTC of Grove Port Ohio.
I had my first consultation on January 16, 2002 with Dr. Choban. She came highly recommended from a friend and her step father. She was exactly as they described. Dr. Choban is very down to earth and answered every question I had. I even saw her with a 1 year post op patient while waiting for some papers and she seems like she cares about each and every patient. She was so supportive of this lady. I can't wait to be there. The staff was wonderful and very supportive. A lot of the staff are former patients.
Today was the first time that we had a chance to meet Dr. Choban. We (my husband and I) both liked her right away. She's very honest and open and although probably isn't comfortable or anxious to talk about mortality or complications she freely and openly answered our questions. I feel that she does care about the obese and that she gets great personal satisfaction in helping others change their lives. Dr. Choban is pretty down-to-earth and was extremely easy to talk to. She gives you a sense of peace about the decisions you're making.
I met with Dr. Choban on 10/25/01. She was extremely informative and described the procedure she would be performning in great detail. I thought she was very personable. She answered all my questions and didn't rush me at all. She was honest and forthright. I appreciated her being honest with me about what would happen after the surgery (pain and such). She didn't try to tone things down. She laid it all on the table. Including any risks and problems that could occur. I definitely would recommend Dr. Choban to anyone who is thinking about having WLS.
