Dr. Miles and his office staff where really great at the time of my surgery. He had great bedside manners and Debra in his office well you all know she is a great. Now that I have had time to look back on it, I should have done a little more investigating on the after care. This is so important I assumed I would breeze right through it and just click right along but of course as you know it didn't happen that way and with all my complications over the past 2 years I have bounced from doctor to doctor. But it is so important to make sure you have a doctor who you can check in with and knows about WLS. Dr. Lamberson is my PC and he is just wonderful. Although he was not thrilled to find out I had had the surgery he just says we have to work with what we have!! ha ha and I will eventually be where I want to be. I think it will take me a little longer than everyone else but there is no doubt about the surgery working!! I just have to get everything else to go along with it!!
I first met Dr. Miles at the seminar that is required for you to attend before you can even schedule an appointment. He is a very pleasant, easy to talk to, gentleman. I had my first visit with him on June 19, 2003. They were busy, however they had a routine and they stuck to it. I think this is a wonderful program that they have set up and everyone has been a pleasure to deal with so far. Debra, who handles the insurance and schedules the surgery, offered me a few pointers to help with the out of pocket expenses that my insurnace would not cover. The best thing that you can do to help things speed along is be prepared. Be prepared when you go to your first visit. The doctor has a website that will give you complete detail in what you need to do. I am very pleased that I researched long enough and was able to find such a pleasant doctor and staff. There was a long wait time before the first appointment however, the wait time to get to see him is worth it.
I first met Dr Miles at the required seminar in Feb 2003. My first impression was very good. He cracked jokes during his presentation and tried to put everyone at ease. He was, of course, very knowledgable about the surgery and pulled no punches about communicating that this is MAJOR abdominal surgery and that it is a tool that if used according to instructions will mean a permanent weight loss and change of lifelong habits. I decided that night that I wanted him to be my surgeon, mostly because he has perfomed several hundred of these surgeries.
On May 22, 2003, I finally had my office appointment with Dr Miles. My opinion of him did not change. He reiterated some of the seminar points and got down to me specifically. We discussed my situation. I am handicapped because of polio when I was 4 years old and I have severe sleep apnea, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and hear disease. Even with all my additional problems, he is willing to take me on.
His office staff is very helpful. They do all the forms for insurance and getting my PCP letters and records.
Aftercare is an integral part of the program that Medical Center East has set up. There is a support group and you are encouraged to attend it both before and after surgery.
I would recommend Medical Center East's program and Dr's Miles and Schmidt to anyone who is considering bariatric surgery.
I have a friend who had the surgery a year ago who has done very well (she has lost over 100 pounds in 9 months) but she did not have as much pre-surgery support and post-surgery support as I will have had.
Surgical competence is much more important than bedside manner but it is certainly best if you can have both. I think Dr Miles has both.
This is my opinion and I hope it doesn't change when I actually have the surgery.
I felt comfortable with Dr. Miles from my first visit. He is very professional and upfront about this surgery. I felt that I could ask him any question and get an honest answer.
His staff is great! They are friendly and really seem to enjoy their jobs. Deborah is a joy to meet. She helped me out any time I had a question about the insurance approval and scheduling.
Dr. Miles is a big believer in aftercare. I will continue to see him once a year to review blood work. I would call him in a minute if I had any problems.
Dr. Miles requires that you attend a siminar and a support group meeting before surgery. I also had to see an internist, a dietitian, and a psychologist. I had chest x-rays and blood work before surgery. I was well informed before I actually had my surgery.
When I went for my 12 month check up, Dr. Miles was very interested in how I had been doing and what I was eating. He truly cares about his patients.
I first saw Dr. Miles at the seminar that you attend before you have your first appointment. He was easy-going, spoke about the surgery, including the types, benefits, and the risks. He then answered any questions from the audience. He never seemed to be in any hurry to leave. When I saw him in his office for the first time, he seemed to be the same way -- very easy-going, didn't seem to be rushing off to the next patient. I've seen him at several support group meetings since then as well, so he seems to be involved with more than just "doing the surgery". His staff is quite friendly, but entirely too busy since Dr. Miles is becoming well-known for his WLS and the number of patients is growing so fast. Dr. Miles and the staff emphasize after care, with special emphasis on proper nutrition and necessary supplements. The support group is wonderful for both pre- and post-op patients. I haven't seen his surgical competence personally (yet), but his reputation is very good. His bedside manner, if anything like what I've seen so far, will be great.
He seemed to be very caring ,and very informative. He also made everyone aware that this is not a crutch, but a tool for us to use. I have never met him but once since my first appointment is in June of 2003.
His staff is very kind and informative. Nothing.
Yes I believe they should meet him and make their own decision.
Very much so.
yes they do.
Yes he did make us very aware of the risk.
Very competent and up to date on all Info. pertaining to this type of surgery with all risk and aftercare.
I can't comment on this as of yet.
