My first impression of Dr. Aranow is that he was very busy. I had to wait over an hour for my appointment and I was the last patient for the day. The staff was leaving and when I went in to speak with him he was inputting my info in something that looked like a palm pilot. I was asking him questions as he was doing this so I didn’t feel I had his full attention. He was nice but the visit seemed rushed. I guess because I had heard so many great things about how he is so warm and takes time to answer all of your questions, etc. that I expected a bit more time and attention, especially since it is such a drastic procedure. I guess I wanted assurance or something. I think my experience would have been different if he wasn’t running late and I wasn’t his last patient of the day. He told me what to do as far as seeing the nutritionist, psychologist, etc., but basically said our next meeting would be at surgery. That surprised me. I don’t know why but I feel like I need more contact than that one short visit before I let someone cut me open. He did say, however, that if I felt I wanted to see him once again before surgery to touch base that I was welcome to come back so I think I will take him up on that.
I still want to go with him because he seems to really know what he is doing. I feel confident in him as a surgeon, it is just that I would have liked a bit more of a personal visit and to not feel so rushed. Again, this is just my experience and this is probably not the norm.
Aftercare was talked about in the information session and I understand that it is very important.
Went to info sessions with Dr. Carlos Barba and Dr. Jonathan Aranow. Started process with Dr. Barba and was not impressed. After going to Dr. Aranow's info session and talking to his office staff I knew he was the one to go with. Dr. Aranow is a nice guy, seems to genuinely care about his patients, is very cautious and VERY thorough. He requires you to attend the support group before surgery and, along with the psychologist and nutritionist, works to make sure you are truly ready before he'll perform the surgery. The people in his office, especially Lois, and the nutritionist and psychologist are excellent as well, although I will say that there is a second nutritionist who works with the regular one whom I personally did not feel comfortable talking to. They all take time to answer questions and explain things when I need them to. Dr. Aranow is very direct and honest about the risks and benefits of surgery. He doesn't try to sugarcoat it at all. He is an excellent surgeon and has a great reputation as well. I feel he took excellent care of me and I would highly recommend him. The only negative thing I couls say about him is that he is very busy and sometimes I feel I am being rushed when I am speaking to him.
WHEN I FIRST MET DR. ARANOW, I COULD NOT BELIEVE HOW YOUNG HE WAS. I MET HIM AT ONE OF HIS POWERFUL, EDUCATIONAL FORUMS, THAT HE REQUIRES ALL NEW, POTENTIAL PATIENTS TO ATTEND. I CAN HONESTLY SAY, THAT IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS SURGERY, I GUARANTEE THAT HE ANSWERS THEM BEFORE YOU ASK THEM. HIS INFORMATIONAL SEMINAR THAT HE RUNS IS WONDERFUL AND NECESSARY FOR ANYONE COMTEMPLATING THIS SURGERY. I CALLED THE NEXT MORNING AFTER THE SEMINAR, TO SCHEDULE A CONSULTATION. ALTHOUGH A VERY BUSY SURGEON, I DID NOT WAIT LONG FOR AN APPOINTMENT, ABOUT A MONTH I BELIEVE. I ALSO HAVE TO TELL YOU THAT HIS OFFICE STAFF IS TOP NOTCH. THEY ARE THE FRIENDLIEST, MOST HELPFUL PEOPLE I HAVE EVER MET. THEY ANSWERED ANY QUESTION I HAD. HONESTLY, DURING MY CONSULTATION WITH DR. ARANOW, HE PUT ME COMPLETELY AT EASE. HE DID NOT TRY TO SELL THE SURGERY TO ME, BUT INSTEAD GAVE ME EVERYTHING I NEEDED TO MAKE AN INFORMATIVE DECISION. HE GAVE ME THE A TO Z ON THE SURGERY AND LEFT NOTHING OUT. IF YOU DO DECIDE TO GO FORWARD WITH THE SURGERY, DR. ARANOW HAS MANY REQUIREMENTS FOR YOU. THIS IS A PLUS, I GUARNTEE YOU THAT. HE LEAVES NO STONE UNTURNED. FROM YOUR MEDICAL TESTING TO YOUR EVALUATIONS, TO YOUR WORK WITH THE DIETICIAN, ALL BASES ARE COVERED. I HAVE FRIENDS THAT HAVE ALREADY HAD THEIR SURGERY WITH HIM AND ARE DOING FANTASTIC. HIS AFTERCARE REQUIREMENTS ARE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE BEFORE CARE. THIS DOCTOR FOLLOWS YOUR PROGRESS FOR YEARS. WHAT A GREAT FEELING! ALSO KNOW THAT YOU CAN CALL ANYTIME WITH QUESTIONS AND YOU WILL GET YOUR ANSWER QUICKLY. I HAVE SEEN HIS SURGICAL WORK, OBSERVED HIS BEDSIDE MANNER AND THE WATCHED IN AWE AT THE COMPASSION THAT HE HAS FOR HIS PATIENTS. I HAVE NOT HAD MY SURGERY YET, BUT ALREADY KNOW FROM WHAT I HAVE SEEN, THAT HE RATES A 10 IN MY BOOK. I LOOK FORWARD TO DEALING WITH DR. ARANOW, NOW AND IN THE FUTURE. GOD BLESS THIS SURGERY AND THIS GREAT DOCTOR, WHO PERFORMS IT!
First impression was his confident manner and the fact that he was not trying to push surgery. He just laid out all the facts and left the decision up to me. Office staff is very pleasant and helpfull. Sometimes his confidence borders on arrogance but I think that is because he is so proud of his accomplishments. Bedside manner was very caring and worked well with rest of hospital staff. I would highly reccomend him to anyone considering the surgery. He changed my life forever.
I though he was very young but very thorough in describing the procedure. In time, I grew very confident in him and his staff. The staff has a great sense of what they are to do. At this time, I don't have anything I like least about him (per-op). Future patients should know that he is very thorough and precise. He stresses aftercare a lot in order to continue and maintain the weight loss. There is a support group set up at the hospital for pre and post-op patients. He addresses the risks of surgery several times, however, he also makes you feel very confident that he'll take preventive measures so that many of these risks do not take place. He is a very busy surgeon and his surgical competence I believe, will out weigh his bedside manner.
