I have struggled my whole life with weight issues. Dr. Aranow finally gave me permission to do the right thing about them. He and his staff were kind and knowledgeable. His before care and aftercare programs are great. I have always felt supported and cared for and cheered on. I have had a very positive experience and feel that my family would agree also as they have been included.
Dr Aranow is the most warm and caring Dr in this field. I did research after research but no Dr that I spoke to can be compared to him. He took time in his office to make me understand down to the most simple questions to the most complicated. Words cannot describe how I feel about my experience with him. I would recommend him to anyone who is considering weight loss surgery. Thank you Dr Aranow. My Husband my family we thank God for you and your commmiment and love to what you do best, helping people take a look at their life on a whole different level.Your priority to safety first no short cuts very thorough in every area before and after surgery. Again thank you
When I was looking into bariatric surgery i asked a friend of mine who's a pulmonary doctor who i should choose. He asked a number of his doctor friends and Dr. Aranow was the one name that they all mentioned. So of course I chose him!
It's been 4 1/2 years since my surgery and I am thrilled with the results. I have maintained my weight with no problems. I got the surgery for health reasons. I was on too many medications to manage weight related health issues and felt if I didn't do something now (at age 40) i would not be around to enjoy may retirement and grandchildren. I highly recommend Dr. Aranow for this surgery to those thinking about having it done!
Dr. Aranow and his staff are the best. I had lap band surgery 4 years ago and I am 100% satisfied. I tell me friends that they'll never see me give up the lapband - it has become my BFF. I can eat in moderation (a newly acquired trait since the band) and discovered that losing weight isn't so tough when you're not hungry. If you're thinking about weight loss surgery, make the trip to Middletown, Connecticut. Pretty sure you won't find anyone better.
Being a nurse in Connecticut for many years, I realize one thing, 'when you are going to let someone open up your body, you want the best and most experienced person to do it." You hear horror stories of gastric bypass surgeries and tremendous complications and sometimes even death. I know this because I did my homework way before and right up to the time I made a choice, and chose Dr Aranow. He came with a very high evaluation within the nursing community. To me, my colleagues opinions are highly valuable as well as the reviews I read on Obesityhelp website. I actually had a well known Hartford Internist tell me, "Go to Dr Aranow in Middlesex hospital." He has a great track record for no complication surgeries. So that is how it all started. I had an exceptional surgery, no complications. Some expected pain, well managed with suffiecient pain medications. I had the RNY and it went very well. I was out 2 years on 7/20/11 and I am still losing weight. The only negative thing that I can say about Dr Aranow is regarding follow up care. It wasn't until my 2 year appointment that I ever saw Dr Aranow again, from the time I saw him in the hospital. He had a very knowledgeable APRN named Julie working with him. Although I know she had all the skill and knowledge needed to do what she needed to do for me, I just feel it would have been nice to see "MY Surgeon" at least once from the hospital day to the two year anniversary. The most important thing to me in review though has been done. I am half the size I used to be and healthy and happy beyond my wildest dreams. Go to Dr Aranow if you live within a resonable distance it is well worth the drive. I know, I live in Windsor Locks which is about an hour drive to Middletown...so worth it though.
He and his staff always make you feel good in the office and they are very friendly. Thank you all.
I had RNY surgery with Dr. Aranow in 2005. He was great during the whole process and although there were some complications, he saw me through them. I had great success and lost more than 170 lbs! Over the last several years, life happened and I did gain some weight back and avoided going back to see him for this reason. I finally went last week and he was not judgemental at all, just discussed with me the steps I need to take to get back on track. I have an appointment with the nutritionist next month and feel confidant that I can recover from my setback. So if anyone is in my situation, call and make an appointment, even if just to set your mind at ease that your labs are good and nothing is wrong. He's not going to make you feel bad, because if you are like me, you do that to yourself well enough!
Nine years ago (yesterday) Dr. Aranow, performed gastric by-pass surgery on me. I went from 305lbs to maintaning 155-160lbs all these years. I went from a size 28 to a 12-14. I had no complications and LOVE my new way of living. I eat better, excerise almost daily and make sure to smile at everyone who is over weight, knowing how they are feeling.
Thank you Doctor for all you have done for me. Wish I could be back in CT ( I live in South Carolina now) to hug you and thank you in person!
All the best,
Erin Williams
I loved Dr. Aranow. He was great. He looks young, but I believe that is a great trait to have. Lois in the office is the best SHE does it all!
Dr. Aranow is the best in his field. He came highly recommended and I would recommend him to any one. My first impression at the informative session was he knows what he is doing and is very familiar with people of all sizes looking at having weight loss surgery. He did not pull any punches and told you exactly what you can expect. I liked having to go through the six month program as it put everything into perspective and made me realize that when the six months was completed I was more than ready to have the surgery.
When it came time to have the surgery there was a heart-breaking loss in my personal life. Dr. Aranow was leery about preforming the surgery as your hormones are up and down after surgery. He showed so much compassion during our conversation and I was deeply touched. I assured him I was ready for the surgery and went through the surgery great.
The office staff is terrific. They are always cheerful and I am checked in quickly. My nutritionist, Liz is knowledgeable and worked with me before and after the surgery. I like the way she takes the time to ensure you are eating the right foods and the proper amount.
Dr. Aranow has started me on my new life . The new tool I was given I am so blessed.
I have been a patient of Dr. Aranow's for about 4 years now. My journey began with the Lap-band procedure in March of 2007. I did very well for the first 8 months, I had lost approximately 68 lbs. then my band slipped. I was terrified of having the gastric bypass surgery so I opted for the lapband. Even after the slip I was still too afraid to have the bypass so I had a band revision in September 2008 and did not do well with it. I did not lose much weight at all and I was very disappointed with the band. It was assumed that I had another slip although it was hard to tell by tests. I finally decided that I wanted to have the gastric bypass surgery. I was terrified but I knew that I needed to do it. Both of my band surgeries were done laprascopically but the gastric bypass surgery would be done open. I had the surgery on 2/22/11. My surgery took a long time because I had two previous stomach surgeries and alot of scar tissue. I have to say that, by far, this surgery was the best of the three. The recovery time was so much faster and the lapband surgery was actually more painful due to the port. I can't believe that I was as terrified as I was and the surgery itself was not bad at all.. I also had a drain in for 3 weeks and that was probably the worst part of the surgery. I wish that I had done the open gastic bypass surgery back in 2007. Dr. Aranow is an excellent surgeon and the office staff is great.
Dr. Aranow has a reputation as the best bariatric surgeon in New England for a reason. From the informational session to the follow-up appointments he was very thorough and attentive. The surgery itself went very well for me with no complications but he does do an open RNY rather than laproscopic. Some may see this as a negative but it's for your benefit. If he discovers there is something wrong while he is operating (hernia for example), he is also a general surgeon and can fix it while you're on the table. However, if he did it laproscopically, he may not have been able to complete the gastric bypass until a later date; a common occurrence in doctors who perform laproscopic bypass.
While he was great throughout the entire process, it wasn't until I had problems with orthostasia that I realized what kind of doctor he was. While the orthostasia was discovered to be unrelated to the surgery, he continued with my follow up appointments and also called my primary care doctor to discuss the problem with her. It was then that I realized that his bottom line is patient advocacy. He puts his patients above all else. He went above and beyond what he had to make sure I was taken care of.
The same can be said of his staff. He works very closely with a small group of professionals who all carry his same work ethic. They are approachable, friendly, and knowledgable. You can call anytime of day with any question and they will either answer it or quickly find someone who can. I never once felt brushed aside or neglected even though they are an EXTREMELY busy office. Everything before the surgery is explained clearly and you know exactly what is expected of you before and after. They have an excellent support program for all stages of the surgery process and are very focused on aftercare.
Try not to write him off as arrogant as your first impression of him as this is NOT the case. Dr. Aranow is confident in his work and that is one of the reasons I chose him as my surgeon. I would not want to trust my life to someone who was not confident in what they are doing.
The only thing that might be negative is the wait time if Dr. Aranow runs late in surgery, or has a staff member call out. To me, this is a fair trade off and I have no problem waiting the extra time. It is just the price you pay to know that you will be taken care of by a close group of people and not get lost in the shuffle of a large staff. He has only run late once or twice with me out of 7 or 8 appointments that have been scheduled with him. As I said, it's always worth the wait knowing that I'm in the best care.
If you choose Dr. Aranow as your surgeon, you can expect excellent bedside manner, a friendly, attentive staff, and to be respected throughoutt the entire process. You will be able to make an informed decision that best suits you and know all the risks of the surgery. You will have a great aftercare program and know how to use your new pouch as a "tool" not as a solution. He has an excellent success rate in surgery but will also make you feel at ease in his office. I recommend Dr. Aranow for anyone who is considering lapband or gastric bypass. Attend the informational session and see if it's right for you. It was the best decision I've ever made. I am down over 50 lbs in 2 months, which is amazing considering how long I have tried to lose weight on my own!
