John Wright, Jr. Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.

As I now have a surgery date and all, I feel less critical of my experience dealing with the doctor's office to get it. I have full confidence in Dr. Wright's surgical abilities. I will say Cathy in the surgery clinic has been a JOY to deal with and I look forward to meeting her maybe during one of my visits.

At first Dr. Wright impressed me as having a dry personality, but very professional and straight-forward. As time went on and he could see the progress, I could tell that he was very proud of my success and of his success (rightly so, I think). His office staff was very helpful. I can't think of one thing I did not like about him. Anyone considering GBS should consider Dr.Wright for their surgeon simply because he is a wonderful surgeon! He is very much into aftercare. He explains very thoroughly the risks of the surgery and does a very thorough pre-op screening. Overall I would rate Dr. Wright as one of the top surgeons (if not the best) in this field. His surgical competence and bedside manner are both GREAT!

I met Dr. Wright about 18 months before I decided to have my surgery. He scared me to death and made me really think about all of my options.
Once I made the decision to move forward, he once again put the fear in me but also made me realize he wanted me to understand all of the ramifications of altering my body. I had the surgery and he was wonderful. He's very gruff and sparing with his praise which made me seek to hear it more often. I wanted to shock him with my progress. He always tests me on appointments and asks me questions on what I've been eating the past few meals and how much water I've been drinking. His staff is always very responsive to questions or concerns and his secretary bent over backwards making sure the insurance approval process was followed in a timely manner.
I would strongly recommend Dr. Wright as a surgeon for anyone considering gastric bypass.

he was knowledgable about my previous surgery, and willing to help.
my impression never changed.
the office staff and nurses are very nice. and helpful.
there is nothing i don't like.
he is very direct, NO beating around the bushes.
he never said, i told him that i had a support group and he told me to keep going.
no structured aftercare that i'm aware of.
all my risks were told to me point blank. it's a little scary when he tells you, because he is so straight forward.
to rate him on a scale of 1-10 i would give him an 8.
i believe that surgical competence is better than bedside manner. iwant the truth not to a run around the bushes.
these were just my personal impressions/experience of my Dr.

I have to say that Dr Wright did a very good job with my open RNY surgery on Oct
20th, 2003. However, I hate the bariactric beds we had to use at Vanderbilt Hospital.
They need to work on them....a lot! Getting in and out of that bed was HELL!
The only other problem I had was not having my bipap machine so I could sleep and rest well. Somehow I was able to get too much morphine after surgery and almost bought the farm. Had to have emergency care because I wasn't getting enough oxygen and not breathing. I was slowly "going away". Thank God for the nurse that came in to take my temperature...I'll never gripe about that again! After that episode, everything went well, I think. I suggest taking your own machinery if you have sleep apnea...and strongly suggest to them that they have you use it! Even in ICU right after surgery!!
All in all, I am very happy with the results of my surgery. I have lost around 80 lbs and feel soooo much better.
Dr Wright is really a terrific surgeon. He did a great job with my surgery and I can't thank him enough. He is very competent.
His office staff is very friendly and helpful. Always nice and smiling. I would definately recommend him.

Dr. Wright is a good Dr. He is very blunt and straight to the point.I was nervous with our first meeting but over time I got use to him and he got use to me. His staff is great as well they are really busy however they are excellent. His interns are great as well. He and his staff answered all of my questions and made me feel comfortable. I would recommend Dr. Wright to all patients searching for a good surgeon. He was also a memeber of the American Board of Bariatrics and that was really important to me.

He's a very good surgern.
1st impression was he was arrangont and didnt like me because I requested him to not use blood transfusion.
Has it changed...Im not sure...he did the surgery , however he never saw me after that...only his asssistants came in to do follow ups in the hospital and I havnt had my first post-op appointment yet.
I guess his personailty is the least of my favorite of him.
Future patients should know he's matter of fact , rountine to the nose, and no since of humor.
I dont know much yet about his aftercare.
HE did stress the importance of the type of surgery I was going to have , but nothing yet for long term...I guess he will next visit.
Oh he's a very skilled surgern...no doubt about it...I told my husband I was going to let him know how his bedside manner was AFTER my surgery....hahaha.
Its been over a yr now and I can say now that He was a very good surgern and would choose him again if I had too.

Dr. Wright is a very good surgeon. He told me about the risks and I knew what to expect. I have had no complications and I didn't even have any drains after the surgery.
I don't remember seeing him but one time in the hospital but I was told he checked on me every day. The residents at Vanderbilt constantly checked on me. One of them stayed all night with me when I had a kidney problem in the hospital.
He did a good job on my surgery and I would recommend Dr. Wright.
