John Wright, Jr. Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.

My first meeting with Dr. Wright felt tense. He seemed distant and abrupt, but more than very capable. He was very matter-of-fact when going over the procedure and the possilble complications. After surgery, however, my impression completely changed. I realise now that he wanted me to take the surgery seriously and not to think of it in any way as a "easy way out". After the surgery, I"ve found him very personalble and with a good sense of humor. Lisa, who is the first person I talked to in the office, is wonderful and patient. We corresponded a bit via email, and she really helped make that first step and easy one. The medical team is also great. I would travel 6 hours to have surgery with this team if I had to -- that's how comfortable they made me feel. I think future patients should really do their research and understand what they're getting into. I had no surprises about the procedure or the healing process, and I think my research helped me with that. Exercise and making smart choices are the main parts of aftercare with Dr. Wright. I had a 1 week, 1 month, 3 month and will have a 6 month visit. Thereafter, visits will be on an annual basis. There is a great support group that meets on the same day as his clinic and I try to go after every appointment. Dr. Wright really emphasized risk, so much so it frightened me a bit, but then I felt like I was prepared for the worst, and when I didnt' have the worst happen, it made the process seem, almost, like no big deal (a small exaggeration). I would rate him as a 10, saying the surgical competence would edge out bedside manner a bit.

I was impressed with him right off the bat
he is however straight forward and to the point. He explained quite abite and in detail on the first visit
I have only had the one visit with him
Very professional but very nice it did seem
like they did things at their own pace however
felt like I was at their mercy
They will definatly do what they say even if it seems like they could be quicker
dr wright was very though about the risk of surgery
so far I am impressed

My first visit with Dr. Wright was great. He was very informative and to the point. He covered every angle of this surgery. What to expect, the good that can come from it or even the complications it could bring. He let me make the decision. He was not the type to just push this operation on me. His staff, especially Lisa has been great. The nurses, Joseph and Gerald were so kind and caring, as they should be. The whole staff, including my surgeon took much time with me. Another Dr., who will be in the operating room is Dr. Nagy. Apparently young, and possibly in his residency, but he, like Dr. Wright knows the finer details of this surgery. I am very grateful for this fine group of care providers.

Little speptical because he had not done surgery on anyone who was 67 but that makes no difference my health was very good went thru surgery extremely well no comp
lications in a few weeeks I will be swimming again an loosing weight isen't that great. I feel good just losing 27 pounds since June 11 today I am 67 years old and
feel better than I have in 30 years.
Go into surgery well prepared, my surgerons were excellent after care is great, making decissions the correct ones and folling just what they tell you is extremely important I have never been sick at all only eat 3 tsp of food at a time and am having no problems eat less than 100 calories per day use liquid vitams the best. I would give my surgeons A+. and all the stall at Vanderbilt.

Everyone was right. Dr. Wright is a man who seems to be of few words and to the point. But he seems very interested and kind...not at all gruff, just somewhat reserved.
Lisa, who works with potential patients over the phone is very helpful and knows her stuff.
The surgeon made no bones about the fact that this is a major decision and that there will be difficult times ahead for many. He also left the decision completely up to me.
The assistant Doctor, I assume she is an intern, spoke with me first. She examined me and then answered my questions. Then he came in and asked if I had any more and looked over what she had put in my chart.
He seems to do everything on the side of caution and I really appreciate that.

I did extensive checking for my surgeon. My decision was based on the staff and credentials. He is great, very skilled and really knows his stuff. He doesn't beat around the bush, he tells it like it is. He has a great assistant who is extremely helpful and prompt, as well as some great residents.
He does not do this surgery for the cosmetic aspect, he does it to improve your health and life expectancy. He covers the risks with you several times for you to thoroughly understand them. He will answer any questions you have, however, you should be prepared, do your homework and have your questions ready. He is a very busy man.
He is at Vanderbilt which is a teaching hospital so you do feel like a bit of a teaching tool, but everyone has been great!
I rate Dr. Wright a 10+. He has been available and thorough with me. He provides his care well and has a tight ship, yet everyone seems happy there. Vanderbilt nursing team was great too!

I found Dr Wright and his staff to be very professional. They seemed at first to be a little too busy to deal with me. Lisa was unavailable when I first began and she is definetly the person to talk with. She must have just been a little stressed, because she turned out to be very nice and helpful. Dr Wright was very informative as well as the residences who working with him.
They offer a support group on Friday afternoon, however I am never able to attend due to work. The covered the risks thoroughly on both the first and second visit. I would rate Dr Wright and his staff very highly. These are just my thoughts on the experience and I can only assume that Dr Wright is very good at what he does, because he seems to be incredibly busy.
04/28/00 = I am now 5 days post op and am at home recouping. Dr Wright, Dr Hagy and the entire Vanderbilt staff were wonderful. I have never been treated any better. I also had an opportunity to attend the weekly support group sponsered by Dr Wright. It was wonderful and very inspiring. I will attempt to go as often as possible.

2/9/2000 - I have an appointment with Dr. Wright on 3 March. His office has been super. Lisa has been helpful.
3/3/00 - I met with Dr. Wright and his associate Dr. Boles today. Dr. Wright was very thorough and did not rush me. He was already very familar with my history although we had never met or spoke prior to today. It's obvious he does his homework prior to meeting with you. He asks in-depth questions about any potential health problems you've experienced. At first he was all business but warmed up to me and my companions (I took my daughter and good friend with me) and was very engaging and friendly. My support group were accepted without question. My first meeting was on time and lengthy, about 1 1/2 hours. At the end he told me that he would submit the request for surgery to my insurance companies and have his office call me to schedule me for surgery WHEN I got my approval (A positive thinker! He didn't say IF). Strong emphasis on aftercare. Thorough explanation of the procedure risks and complications. Was not offended when I told him I had reviewed his curriculum vita on Vanderbilt's website - in fact, was pleased I had checked him out. Expectes you attend at least one support group at Vanderbilt on Friday's. There too much to write today - will update after I see him again.
4/18/00 Dr. Wright does good work. He was there when I woke up in recovery and came each day, late afternoon, with his staff. Not a man of many words but his actions speak volumes. My stitches are nice, tight and uniform. No nausea or vomiting. No blood or gas pain...If you want good results Dr. Wright is your man. Also appreciated the fact that all his bariatric patients go to the same ward. He's selective so there is little problem with overbooking that has resulted in so many others winding up in maternity, having to stay in ICU, etc.
