Dr. Huse is a great surgeon and a caring man. My first impression was that he was very knowledable about gastric bypass and very professional. His office staff are very friendly and go out of there way to help you get what you need. What I least like about Dr. Huse was that he is very very buzy and its sometimes hard to schedule an appointment. He is the most requested surgeon in Indianapolis. What future patients should know is that Dr. Huse will do the very best job he can and will make sure you get the best care that he can offer. Dr. Huse as well as St. Vincents Carmel Hospital strees that aftercare is of high priority and that you should follow there structured aftercare program to get the best care you need. Dr. Huse covered the risks of surgery very well and I understood that even death can occur in some instances, but with the structured aftercare you will have a lower risk of any complications. I would rate Dr. Huse a 9 out of 10. The only one that is perfect is GOD. :) I believe surgical competence and bedside manner are both great with Dr. Huse. You can ask for a better Doctor.

06/22/04:He seemed to be very knowledgeable and up-front. I participated in a class with 10 other potential patients, and then met one on one with him after the class. He explained the different types of surgery well, and also covered the risks.
He was somewhat "clinical" in his approach, but was also very concerned that all of my questions were answered.
I'm very anxious about the insurance. I had had my doctor records sent to him ahead of time, and was hoping that he would have looked them over and could give me an idea of whether it looked like the information was adequate to meet the insurance company's requirements. He obviously hadn't seen my information yet though, so I'm in the "waiting to hear" phase.
The office staff were very friendly and helpful.
06/30/04: The office staff have been very helpful with answering questions. The insurance coordinator has been especially helpful. I also received a packet in the mail today with a letter confirming that my information had been sent to the insurance company. The packet also included a call log to record information from any calls with the insurance company. It also included key points about different insurance companies based on their experience with them. Also included was information on next steps after approval, a sample appeal letter if it's needed, and a checklist of thing that have to be done.

I first met Dr. Huse when I went in for the screening part of the program. He explained all about the surgery and postop time to a group of us. He was very informative.
Later I got to talk to him individually. He was very straightforward in his answers and did not try to lead me in my decision in any way. He was very professional in his approach.
He explained all the risks of surgery and I had complete confidence in him.
Dr. Huse's office staff was great. Before surgery I had to call many times with questions and Fran helped me so much. She is fantastic. After surgery if I had a question and would have to call, I could leave a voice mail for one of the nurses and they would call me back. They were so kind and didn't act like I was bothering them at all. I would give them a 10 out of 10.
The day of surgery Dr. Huse came in to talk to me and joked with me to help easy my tension. On his followup visits and at discharge he was easygoing and very easy to talk to. I think he has a great sense of humor. I highly recommend him. He did an open bypass on me and the scar is only about 5 inches. I have had basically no bad days since surgery. Dr. Huse is the best.

Dr Huse seems to be very knowledgable about this area. He has been performing these surgeries since 1977. He is a strictly no nonsense type of guy. I had been complaining to my previous surgeon about problems with my SRVG to no avail. Dr Huse just after our consult sent me to have and EGD done which found my problem of staple line breakage. He will be performing my revision. He was very helpful in explaining all surgery risks and what he hopes to accomplish. I am just glad to have found a doctor who would listen to my concerns.
Dr Huse is an excellent surgeon. My procedure was open rny revision and besides correcting previous problems by another surgeon he took away my pain. I wasn't rushed out of the hospital. I was able to go home after six days, when I felt well enough to handle being at home alone. His office staff has been just as supportive. Michelle and Fran and all of the others are an example to others in this area of healthcare.
I am very confident that only good things are to come in my future and I have to thank God foremost and Dr Huse as well.

Have not seen her yet. Will update soon.

Dr. Choban was everything I expected, she was because of what I have read and the chats I have had with some of her past and present patients. Very helpful tool.
Well the building itself was impressive, staff even more so.. very personable.
There was nothing I didn't like!!
pay attention, because she is full of information and not affaid to share or answer any question because there is no stupid question..Who knows maybe you can be the one person to ask her a question she's not heard yet :)
After care, a must, a must walk, walk, walk. Do what you are suppose to do and "don't be a cry baby" about it if you want to succeed( my opinion the Dr. did not say this) But to me this is the bottom line she can do the surgery and do it well to hear tell, but we have to do the rest. She gave us the tool to do what we sat out to do the rest is up to us.( No I haven't had this but I have had other surgeries )And I did recover much faster when I did what I was told no matter how painful, So I hope to do the same I don't expect any less from myself.
The risk factor was a no holds bar..everything laid out on the table. You would have to be a fool if you don't think there is a risk in this or any surgery.
From a scale of 116 wich is what I have to lose, 116 being the highest score (116 10x fold)
In my opinion surgical competence! Who cares if the surgeon has some what of a not so nice bedside manner. It would be nice but face it we live in a not so perfect world so why should we expect them to be "perfect" As long as they know what they are doing when they have my body big or samll under the knife..
Changed Dr.'s I have an appt. with Dr. John M.Huse Feb. 17, 2004 wish me luck....^_~

My first impression of Dr. Huse was that he was a soft spoken, quiet, but knowledgable doctor. I later found out that he has quite a sense of humor and I liked him even more. Most of all I trusted him completely. His office staff is friendly and helpful. I like him because he was straight forward, honest about the risks, and seemed to really care about me as a person. He never seemed to be in a hurry and was always willing to answer my questions and to make me feel comfortable. Future patients should understand that Dr. Huse prefers to do open RNY instead of lap. I believe that he feels more comfortable with the open surgery. He states that he sees fewer complications with open surgery. My incision is only about 4 1/2 inches long and my recovery has been easy. I only had to stay in the hospital 3 days and I needed very little pain medication after the first day. As far as aftercare, the St. Vincent's program follows a strict full liquid diet for the first 6 weeks. I would recommend Dr. Huse based on both his medical and interpersonal skills.

My fist impression of Dr. Huse was good, He was very professional and informative. My impression has not changed. He is wonderful. Very considerate and helpful.
Dr. Huse' office staff is very nice and helpful.
Future patients should trust Dr. Huse and do exactly what he tells you to do. It will pay off in the long run.
He is very supportive and understanding. He will listen and answer you questions.
Yes, you see Dr Huse every three months.
He told us all the possibilities. The good and the bad.
I think you need both. We definitely need surgical competence and it definitely helps to have good bedside manner.
Thanks Dr. Huse.

I have only met with Dr. Huse once, I am 23 years old and I felt very scared to be at this point, however he quickly put me at ease with his knowledge and how well prepared he was. I can't tell you anymore about him but all of my doctors say that he is one of the best hopefully i will find out before to long.
Well I am 2 months out now and have lost 60lbs so far. I have had a few set backs and have had to call his office several times and he has been more than helpful and supportive no matter what time or how silly the question. His care has been above and beyond, I am not one for doctors but he has changed my mind. Upon first meeting him I was not sure what to think of him however after the surgery I knew that I was so lucky to have had him. According to what I have heard he is one of the more cautious of the surgeons that work with St. Vincents in terms of how long he keeps you in the hospital usually 2-4 days, 4 if you have had probs. I had my procedure preformed open and from what I have seen with others incisions, mine is very minimal, maybe 3 inches. So I would rate him a 10.
