University of Minnesota Physicians Bariatric Center
Dr. Ikramuddin is very nice, but straight to the point. He tells you the positives and he also tells you all the risks which I like because he doesn’t sugar coat it.
He makes me feel comfortable in having him do my surgery because any questions I had for him he had an immediate answer for. Also anyone I have asked said he was a wonderful doctor. Nothing bad to say so far!!
His office staff are all very busy, but they try to get back to you in a timely manner.
Gentle, kind, didn't talk down to you, but didn't candy coat the procedure. His staff (in general) were very nice. Just like in every staff setting, there were a couple of people who didn't do their job that well.
I went to a couple of follow-ups, but the waiting was so long, I just gave up after the 3 month visit.
I FINALLY met with Dr. Ikramuddin after 10 months of waiting...but let me tell you, SO WORTH THE WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I knew I wanted him back in January, and when I met him for the first time, I knew I had picked the right surgeon! So nice, so sweet, so personable. There wasn't a whole lot of time to speak with him, as he was VERY busy, but the time we had together, was well spent and he and I agree on what proceedure to go with! (Lap RNY) SO, the consult was finished, and now I just have to wait for insurance to say yay or nay! I should know by next week if I am going to be able to have surgery! Keeping my fingers crossed that I get to have surgery with the best surgeon in the state!
First Impression: I had to wait 16+ months for an appointment. Then was forced to wait with about 25 other people for my informational seminar that was to be 2 hours and took 4!
Finally met Dr. I when he spoke to the group, and then alone for 5-6 minutes at the end. He was very kind, but also very direct. He seems totally committed to this type of surgery and I have learned he was an early pioneer of the laporoscopic procedure.
Everyone I talk to about him says he is the best! This does help to increase one's opinion and trust.
Office/Staff: Two very different things. The staff tends to be very good, but very over worked and busy. They will give you some time, but when it fits in their schedule. This goes diectly to how the OFFICE is run. DO NOT EVER think you will speak to a live person when you call in. I have been warned follow up visits on "clinic" days can leave patients waiting 3+ hours before they are seen. I get it that they are busy and in demand. So, hire a few extra people or accept fewer patients!
I had read one persons account of Dr. I and they thought he was very "aloof in his Armani suit." I didn't get that impression at all. I kind of expect a little bit of self assuredness in someone who will be coming at me with a knife!
As far as knowing more about him, just ask him (when you see him). He was very forthright about his past patients (both successes and failures - only a few in many years).
The AFTERCARE is considered essential to Dr. I and his entire staff. They are totally committed to it and have in house support groups as well as pre-op special sessions at the hospital.
The risks were spelled out, and spelled out again, and yet again. You really need to know that it isn't simple or easy - it is a big deal! And they make that clear. If your surgeon is NOT telling you the bad with the good... RUN AWAY!
So far, before the surgery, I give him and his staff high marks. I would love a little more attention from the whole crew, but current staffing/patient ratios are just too high.
I have only met Dr. Ikramuddin once thus far. He seemed very genuine to me and a pleasant man. The staff I have encountered have all been very helpful and friendly. They have been quite dilligent about returning any phone messages I have left. I started this process through a different hospital, so I have less experience with them, but so far it has all been very postive.
Dr. Ikramuddin is a very experienced bariatric surgeon. I have only met him once during the seminar and an individual consult afterwards. He is very pleasant and professional. He was very rushed during our visit since he got "beeped" and also had about 15 other patients to attend to. He presented a thorough and realistic portrait of the risks associated with bariatric surgery. He is very approachable and I am very impressed with the whole process that has taken several months to become approved, the support groups, etc. The whole process is structured to help you achieve success, which I am very grateful for since this is such a huge decision.
When I met Dr. Ikramuddin, I was impressed by his matter-of-fact attitude. He didn't sugarcoat anything, but still came across as very caring about his patients and took time with us even though he was very busy. His office staff is nice and very knowledgable. One of the nurses, Joanie, is the best. She helps people out with whatever they need and always had the best attitude I have ever seen. She truly touches people. The whole office works together to give patients the best care. They are there if you have questions or just need encouragement. They let me know the risks, benefits, and and how to cope with everyday life after surgery. I would rate the surgeon very high. He had some unexpected things come up during the surgery, but handled them beautifully. I am very impressed with the way things turned out. The surgery was not painful for me and the healing process is going fine. I am so glad I chose Dr Ikramuddin for my surgeon.
