Coastal Center for Obesity Bariatric Center
Dr. Owens & his staff are awsome. They always treat me with respect & encouragement. Everything was explained, checked and rechecked. Their web site is the best.
These are only my opinions related to my experience with with Dr. Owens and the Coastal Center for Obesity for my Lap RNY...But I happen to think Dr. Owens is a great doc. Very professional, very knowledgable and up front about what he is going to do and what the risks and benefits are. Hes got a good bedside manner. He does take the time to sit and listen. He makes very clear that you need to follow the aftercare program to have maximum results. His center offers and excellent support group 2 nights a week along with a nutrition class and frequent follow up visits. The staff is always just a phone call away for any help. I would rate him as an excellent doctor and would see him if i had to do it all over again. (Which i never will).
Dr. Oliak, (Dr. Owens partner) is also great. Very kind, very attentive and skilled at what he does. Takes time with the patients and even comes and does presentations and education at the support group meetings for all theh post-op patients. The support meetings are free and their to keep you encouraged and make sure you suceed after surgery.
I met Dr. Owens today (7/26/03) for the first time today at a free seminar they asked me to attend. I was very impressed with him, he did about an hour long presentation educating everyone about the risks of obesity, the benefit of surgery and how the surgery is performed, and then there was a lot of questions/answers. He was very personable, and made me feel very comfortable.
I will continue to update after more meetings/appointments.
9/13/03 - I had my surgery by Dr. Owens on 9/2/03. He is a very skilled surgeon, I don't have any complaints about that. I want to warn anyone who has him for a Dr. to be very prepared to deal with his abrupt bedside manner. He will be in and out of your hospital room before you can blink! So if you have something to talk to him about make sure you grab his attention right away! It can be very frustrating trying to get information from him. These are just my opinions based on my experiences.
This quiet man is an excellent, dedicated, and very caring surgeon with an unparalelled skill level. I trust him explicitly to do what is the very best for his patient, and it is hard for me to trust.
When I had a bowel obstruction, he listened to me and took me seriously, took all care of me, and was wonderful.
Now, if you want someone to hold your hand and discuss things at length, he's not the man for you - but if you want a really skilled surgeon with many years of experience I would recommend him without any hesitation.
Aftercare is very available, and the Chapman hospital that I went to has a fantastic nursing staff and is very good.
Dr Owens is a very genuine human being, willing and capable of making a difference in peoples lives.
His office staff is caring and concerned and there to find answers and be supportive. They are easily reached and available.
I recieved awesome care while in Orange and would highly recommend Dr Owens and Chapman hospital.
I feel very comfortable with Dr. Owens and his staff. I am impressed with Dr. Owens bedside manner, very gentle and caring. His staff is amazing, never I have met a better bunch of professionals. They treat you so well and with competance. The Coastal Center has went over the aftercare several times prior to me meeting Dr. Owens. This team has looked at this surgery from all aspects and covered each one with a fine toothed comb. I am excited to be become a member of the losers club with the Coastal Center staff behind me.
Truly at this time I have no complaints about this center. Start to finish it will be 29 days from getting approval to doing all my work ups to surgey.
Of the 10 family members (including myself) that have had this surgery, 6 were performed by Dr. Milton Owens. He struck me as being a perfectionist. I felt he would take great pains to ensure everything went well and scaring would be nice and neat and minimal. He did and it was! He has a wonderful staff and they make you feel like a part of a loving family.
Dr Owens is very straight forward, and very caring professional. He cares for his patients needs, and will listen and address all of your concerns. His office is top notch, I will say that they are very busy, so if you need to call them be persistent.
The Coastal Center provides a Monday night support group at the Western Medical Center, and for anyone who has had the surgery, or is even remotely considering it, should come to one of the meetings.
You can't find a more compassionate group whose full purpose is to support one another.
You can tell from the first time you meet Dr. Owens that he is a professional in this field, and has extreme confidence.
He saved my life, and I am sure that if you decide to choose Dr. Owens or the Coastal center, you couldn't be in better hands.
He is not a big talker, I got the feeling that his mind was going a mile a minute thinking about what was best for me.
I have been to many, many specialist, but Dr. Owens is tops on my list.
3/29/03 - My husband and I attended the seminar at Chapman Medical Center sponsored by Coastal Center for Obesity. It was standing room only! I didn't really learn anything new, but then I have researched the daylights out of WLS. I was a little suprised how straight-forward they were regarding the risks of complications and side effects. I like that. At the conclusion of the seminar, I turned in my paperwork and gave them copies of my insurance cards. I'm ready. Now I just have to wait for insurance approval.
6/10/03 - I met with Dr. Owens today and found him very concerned, highly professional and personable. I left my appointment feeling that I'm in good hands.
I finally after fighting with my insurance had surgery by Dr. Owens on 11/06/02. He was wonderful in all aspects of this surgery. His office was the best. He will never know what an impact he has made on my life by giving me my life back. I am 6 months post-op and down 110 pounds.
