My first impression of Doctor Coats was one of excitement and nerviousness. I was so excited to be starting over that i had to right down all the qestions that i had for him. I was scared that something might go wrong. I wanted to makse sure that I was prapared. rnI love the office staff. It took a year for me to get approved. Thats alot of phone calls to their office. I have every confidence that if you chose Dr. Coats as your surgeon you are in the best hands possible. He has set rules for a reason and expects you to keep to them. For me as a individual I was just starting out with all the probles, health wise. i didnt want to be prescribed meds for the rest of my life. I dont want to be in and out of the hospital for the rest of my life either. I wanted to be young while I still am. That is why I chose to have the surgery. I would give him 20 out of 10.rnHe has both great beside manner and surgical cometence. He was Great

Surgeon: Patrick Coates, M.D.rnI Haven't met Dr. Coates yet. At the seminar I met Dr. Coirin, and he is nice also so I first signed up with him but I found out that my insurance would only cover me with Dr. Coates, which is fine coz I've read numerous accounts of his happy patients and how skilled he is, so I'm comfortable with him as my surgeon. I saw the PA (Ledema) at my first consult, and Ledema was very nice and my husband and I asked her all the questions we could think of and she was pleasant about answering everything. All the other office staff members are also very polite and courteous when you call by phone or see them in the office. They took care of everything about the insurance and they are busy but were never too busy to help me whenever I called. Sometimes you had to call..if you are like me, impatient and want to know things instead of waiting :) and I think they told me I will meet Dr. Coates at the pre-op consult. So I can update this once I do meet him ..so overall, I'm very happy with Dr. Coates office and his staff. I'd recommend them for sure ! ************ I met Dr. Coates on Aug. 29 2005, the day of my surgery and he is so very caring, concerned, shows an interest in you as a patient, answered all my questions, I like how he knows so much that I feel very confident in him...I'm so glad he is my doctor. I'd recommend him to ANYONE who is lucky enough to have him on their insurance plan.rn

Dr. Coates is pretty straight to the point, has been doing WLS for many years now. I met him about 6 years ago when I did a consult for WLS, that had to be put on hold because my mother had terminal cancer. At that time, I was impressed with his knowledge and effort he put in to reviewing my health history and eating habits to find out if the surgery would be the best thing for me.rnrnI've seen him several times during my 3 days hospital stay for RNY. He visited with me shortly before surgery, and then twice after. On the day of my discharge he actually came and climbed up on my bed (while I was packing) and sat and talked with me for about 10 minutes about what I should and shouldn't be doing when I get home.rnrnHis staff is wonderful. If they can't assist you right when you call, they get back to you promptly. Most of your aftercare is handled by the PAs, who are extremely capable, as Dr. Coates is doing surgeries. You are reminded, advised, and encouraged to attend the monthly WLS support group held by Sutter/Memorial, and Dr. Coirin, Dr. Coates partner, comes and answers medically related issues/questions there.rnrnOh, and Dr. Coates is shy. He's quick to smile, but you won't hear much out of him until he's been around you a little bit.

I first met Dr. Coirin at the orientation that I attended. He was very good at explaining the procedure and he threw in a little humor at times which impressed me. His office staff is great, they are very helpful when I call and I have never been ignored when I have a question or problem. The aftercare program is very structured and is detailed out in their handbook that you get. I can answer most questions by going back to this great reference. I usually see Diane his PA, and she has been very helpful and informative. I chose Dr. Coirin after talking to many people in the health care profession and he was the one whose name came up almost always as their choice if they were going to have the surgery. I would recommend him anytime! The only negative I could say is that I have had very little contact with Dr. Coirin himself, have only talked to him two or three times...once before I went into surgery and then once or twice in the hospital after surgery. Oh, and one more negative...his office scales weigh heavier than mine! These impressions are from my personal experience and I am making no statements about what others have experienced.

I really like this doctor and heard many good things about him before the surgery from other people who had him. Sandy who works in his office is really nice and helpful. They are really supportive. In the hospital I saw him every day and showed really good bed side maner. I would recamend him to others. The only things is I hope to see him when I go to his office and not so much of his PA.

Dr. Coates is very nice. He was willing to answer any questions. The office staff is wonderful and helpful. They didn't seem to mind my many questions. If you didn't have any questions for the doctor he didn't seem to spend any extra time to go over anything. Not much has been said about aftercare. I do have an appointment for a week after. The PA addressed most of the basic information. He seems pretty great all around.
