Central California Bariatric Surgery Bariatric Center
I have seen Dr. Coirin before. He is wonderful; very calm, soothing and supportive. He has repaired a hernia for me several years ago. I trusted him with that surgery; and he can 'cut' on me any time. His office staff are supportive; but VERY busy. They do always take the time to hear you out. Dr. Coirin told me the surgery is just a tool; and repeated several times that the after care is the most important part. If you don't follow the plan; it won't work. Dr. Coirin; has great bedside manners and is amazing with surgery.
My first impression of Dr. Coirin was that he was very knowledgeable. After my husband and I attended his seminar, we both decided he was the doctor for me. I contacted his office and was so impressed with his staff. They were able to answer my questions, and get me in for a consultation within a week from the time I first called them. They are all so pleasant to work with. I started this process on August 13, 2003 and just found out my surgery date is Sept. 11, 2003!!! Karen said this is the fastest turn around time for approval. I know with the knowledge of Dr. Coirin and his staff, my aftercare program will be fantastic. I can't image going somewhere else, when you can get tremendous knowledge right here in good old Manteca!!
Consultation: The consultation was on a day where he was swamped with appts with both pre and post ops. It was on 6/25 and it couldn't have lasted longer than 10 mins. There wasn't really much to discuss as I had attended his lecture that covered the basic facts about the procedure and complication risk factors.
Pre-op Surgical Appt: This appointment was more detailed than the consultation---which makes sense, because I'm actually having the procedure done. We discussed "my specific risks" which made me feel more comfortable with my decision.
Impression: My impression is that Dr. Coirin is equipped with the knowledge and experienced from the actual procedures he's performed and assisted in recent years. He's a member of various medical associations and there wasn't one question that he was unable to answer regarding my concerns of others' experiences on the OH memorial page. It's good to be psyched up about this procedure but at the same time it is extremely IMPORTANT to address ALL your concerns with the physician. Dr. Coirin openly communicated with me about the procedure and my recovery period. He stressed the importance of participating in the group's aftercare program.
Future patients should note that they should take this lifestyle change seriously---it is not something that will satisfy you cosmetically alone. It also, will require a lot of work in following the 4 steps to success which includes that dreadful activity EXERCISE. I must allow this tool to work for me by doing my part. Weight maintenace is up to me----the patient. Lord knows I don't want any revisions in the future....I don't know too many physicians that favor that idea.
I will update this section during Post-op in regards to surgical competence and bedside manner.

ATTENTION: THE PRECEDING INFORMATION WITHIN THIS SECTION IS STRICTLY MY PERSONAL IMPRESSIONS OF MY OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND I AM NOT MAKING STATEMENTS OR REFERENCES ABOUT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE MAY EXPERIENCE.

I have ( had ) high blood pressure and thyroid . His staff is great also thanks for the support. It pay to have all that patience for my insurance to go through right, Sonja ; )
Dr. Coates is a fine surgeon. I was taken care of, no problems, and healing was quick and very little scaring. He was wonderful from beginning to end. He sits with you for as long as you need, and is very good looking (I had to sneak that in there) and he is one of the MOST PROFESSIONAL doctors I have met, with strong ethics of the finest. Even his staff are friendly, sympathetic, and hard working. They all deserve a raise! Ummm, I'm not kidding...
MY FIRST IMPRESSION OF DR. COATES WAS THAT HE IS A KIND AND GENTLE MAN. HE IS A CARING DOCTOR WHO LOVES HIS WORK AND THE PEOPLE HE IS HELPING? THIS MAN IS GREAT. HE IS KNOWLEDGABLE AND TAKES HIS TIME TO SHOW YOU THROUGH THE SURGERY PROCESS. HE ALSO WALKS YOU THROUGH WHAT HE EXPECTS FOR YOU TO DO AFTER SURGERY. THIS WILL BE THE MOST FRIENDLIEST MAN YOU WILL EVER MEET.
HIS OFFICE STAFF IS SO FRIENDLY. THEY TRY TO HELP YOU WITH ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING.
I HAVE BC MEDI-CAL AND MY HUSBAND AND I WERE TOLD THAT AS SOON AS THE OFFICE RECEIVED OUR APPROVAL THAT THEY WOULD CALL TO SET UP OUR SURGERY FOR 3 TO 4 WEEKS FROM THE APPROVAL. NOW BC CALLED TO ASK QUESTIONS FROM US AND THEY TOLD US THAT WE WERE APPROVED. I CALLED 4 DAYS LATER AND THEY HAD GOTTEN OUR APPROVAL BUT OUR CHARTS ARE NOW ON THE DOCTORS DESK FOR HIM TO LOOK AT. IT HAS BEEN 2 WEEKS NOW SINCE OUR APPROVAL. STILL WAITING BUT GETTING MORE AND MORE FRUSTRATED.
I have my initial consult scheduled with Dr. Coirin on 8/13/03. Will also attend his seminar that night. I have not met Dr. yet, but the office staff has always been friendly on the phone. And they sent the patient packet the SAME DAY. I felt that the girls on the phone were really LISTENING to me. I am looking forward to my consult in 2 weeks. I will update after that.
8/14/03 I attended the seminar last night, after meeting with Dr. Coirin earlier in the day. Again, the office staff has been wonderful. I did not have a long wait (I was prepared for an hour or more), and Dr. Coirin did not mind answering my FOUR pages of questions. He has a very structured aftercare program. He did discuss the risks of surgery, but since I have done a lot of research, and many of my questions had to do with risks, he did not dwell on them. He is very mild mannered, and has a good sense of humor. I would rate him a 10+.
For all of you preops researching surgeons, Dr. Coirin's current surgery count is around 160, plus note his many years of experience with laproscopic surgery!
Dr Coirin is a very pleasant, kind and caring physician..Takes his time with you, never being in a rush..
The office staff is always helpful and I appreciate all the effor just to get my disability papers returned in time to continue getting paid, both by the state and the company i work for.
I felt very well prepared and advised of all the possibilites associated with this surgery..Dr never down-played the fact that this is a major surgery with all the risks..
They have a great binder I was given with my first visit which was just a consultation, even before my health insurance approved the procedure..The binder was a big big help..I could go to it and find most answers to my questions whenevery i had them..The binder covers pre-op to reaching goal..So ahead of time one can see whats in store for them for life..The other thing that was really emphasized was the fact that this surgery is really just a "tool" the success or failure is up to me..I am relearning how to eat.
Dr Coirin is a comforting and confident presence..if he's confident in himself so should i be...
The only unpleasantness I experienced is coming out of the anethesia, but that's me, and the xray the next day checking for leaks, that was dreadful but necessary.
In the 2 classes I attended, 1 pre-op and 1 6 days post-op, I would like to see more info like the what, why, when, explained about eating..i am generally a noisy person and like to know what to expect if i eat this or why cant i have ice tea?? Some of the things taught to us come with no real explaination..I am an adult and i cant figure out for myself what to do and not to do after surgery with enough info to be informed..
