Celio O. Burrowes M.D. Bariatrics Bariatric Center
I have been very pleased with Dr. Burrowes. My experience with him is very positive. I heard so many positive things about him from the staff at the hospital. Everyone I asked about him never hesitated to say something great about him. He is for sure highly respected there. My incision looks so good. Small only 2 1/2 inches long and is healing great. If I have needed him at all I just page and he calls back very quickly. I really am pleased with Dr. Burrowes. His office is always always busy. Most of the time when you call you get the answering machine but they are great about calling you back. Sometimes you do have to wait for a while for you appointment but then other times you get right in and out. I thankfully am a patient person and I dont mind the waiting because then you get a chance to talk to other people and I love to ask them questions if they are post op so I can know kind of what to look forward too. If you arent a patient person you may become irritated but he is an excellent Dr. and I dont mind the wait.
I was very impressed with the doctors and the staff from the very beginning, my experience with them was great from the start.
Dr. Burrowes and Dr. Case are both very compassionate and skillful Doctors.
The staff is overwhelmed, but they are/were always very kind and helpful.
The wait in the office is extremely long, but while you are there, it is like being in a support group meeting. I have met lifelong friends in the waiting room.
Be prepared to wait.
Yes he does have a structred care program, as well as monthly support group meetings.
I thought that he explained the risks very well, in fact he gives you a month to think about it all and read over the packet of information that he gives you. You also have to watch a video of one of the surgery he has performed.
I would rate him a 10.
Everything was great, I have no complains about him at all.
My first impression with Dr. Burrowes was fantastic. I had been to a few physicians locally but was given no hope for getting this approved by my insurance. Dr. Burrowes sat down and talked with me and explained the seriousness of this surgery as well as working out a plan of action for getting surgical approval. The office staff were so friendly and approachable that I made up my mind that day that I would have my surgery in Atlant, Ga. eventhough, I live in St. Louis, Mo. and it was going to be something short of a miracle that this would occur. I thought I would have to move to Atlanta and get a new job with insurance that would approve me but I did not have to do that. As far as I am concerned Dr. Burrowes performed my miracle.
I have to also mention that I had weight loss surgery in 1977 and a revision in 1979 which made my surgery even more of a risk. Well it is 6 mos later and I feel wonderful and fully recovered. It took some time but Dr. Burrowes took all the necessary precautions to make sure I would have a successful outcome. I am down 115 pounds since my procedure on 7/8/02.
Dr. Burrowes is very knowledgeable in this field and takes meticulous care of his patients. He is up on all the latest data and is constantly making changes and alliances with different people to improve the weight loss outcome for all post-op patients. He has connected with Lee Haney gym for a surpervised workout program for his patients at a reasonable cost and is currently developing a research project involving the long term health improvements for his patients.
There is not anything that I can say that I like least about Dr. Burrowes. I will say he is extremely busy and I do not get to see him as much as I would like post-op. If I would insist I know that I could follow-up with him but I am very confident with his associate Dr. Case who has followed me from my first post-op day and knows my case very well. Dr. Burrowes does all of the pre-op interviews, and surgeries. Dr.Case does all of the follow-ups. Dr. Burrowes office is probably too concientious with his aftercare program. He still sees my friend who first recommended him to me and she is 2 years post-op. The time between appointments increases the further out you are from surgery date but he continues to interact with most of his patients. I would also say that follow-up appointments take a long time once you are in the office due to the large volume of patients and the fact that the doctors are only in the office 2 days of the week. The remaining days they are in surgery so expect to spend some hours in the office for follow-up appts. I enjoy talking to the other patients while I am waiting so it is kind of fun for me. Since I live in St. Louis, when I travel down for a follow-up appointment that is usually all I have planned for the day so the wait does not bother me. Plus it is the only time I can talk to others about Dr. Burrowes since no one in St. Louis knows him.
Yes there is a structured aftercare program as well as a support group. Dr. Burrowes is very careful about explaining the risks and seriousness of this surgery. I am a nurse by profession, so I will say he does an excellent job compared to what I see on a regular basis at work.
Overall I rate Dr. Burrowes a 9 on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being least favorable and 10 being most favorable.
Dr. Burrowes' surgical competence is probably a little better than his bedside manner. I love his bedside manner but some have written that he seems aloof. I feel he is very soft spoken and quiet initially. He is very calm and reassuring and non-judgemental of his patients. He is very committed, caring and sincere in his approach and he trully wants to help you get better and lead a healthy, improved life. I cannot say enough about this man. I love him for what he has done for me in terms of my health. I also love all the staff as well. They are all committed to helping the patients. Dr. Burrowes needs another nurse to help Katherine out though.
I like this man, and feel confident in his training under Dr. Mal Fobi who devised this particular procedure. He makes very certain that the patient understands this is not a "quick fix," but requires a committment by the patient to a life long change.
He is very straight forward, answered all questions, no matter how stupid they sounded to me. I like him even better since the second meeting, when he arranged for a long discussion with the anestheologist who is taking my health and fears into consideration.
Dr. Burrowes is not one who dumps the patient after the surgery, but maintains contact, which I find very positive. Overall, I would very, very highly recommend Dr. Burrowes.
OK, 6 months post op and there is only one negative about Dr. Burrowes and that is aftercare and his office. They rarely answer the phone, and getting canned messages doesn't cut it. I understand how hectic it can get, but....The staff are all darling women, and very overworked. Dr. Burrowes and Dr. Case are wonderful surgeons and very positive and supportive. However it would be nice to be able to get through to the office on occassion. It is an 8 hour round trip for me to visit the doctor, and I can't go as often as local patients do. I would still go with Dr. B for the surgery though. He Is the BEST!
Dr. Burrowes was wonderful. He spent an enormous amount of time w/ me at my consultation. He helped writed some of the legislation that requires insurance to cover teh treatment of obesity and morbid obesity. He seems both passionate and compassionate about this field. He has a party every yr for his pts. He recently acquired another physician in his office a Dr. Kaiz (not sure about spelling) but is very nice as well. I met him in the hospital post op and have seen him for my post-op visits so far.
If you choose Dr. Burrowes, I must warn you about the office. It is an older building w/ very very limited seating and be prepared to wait and wait. That part sucked pretty bad, except that I have met some wonderful people also on this journey w/ us. The other negative part is the phone system. They have 2 ingoing lines and then you get a general mail box that I have left messages on w/o receiving a call back. Luckily though they do list the MD beeper so if you need him you can get through. Most of the office staff is friendly and helpful. All in all he is worth the little bit of a hassle.
I had my first consultation with Dr. Burrowes on February 5, 2002. I was so excited after having to wait three(3) months to get an appointment.
His office staff was so wonderful and friendly. During my office visit, they took pictures, discussed their survey and had me watch a live video of the open RNY procedure. They also had several photo albums of previous patients with their before and after photos. This was very entertaining and inspirational.
Finally, after about four hours, Dr. Burrowes came into my room and introduced himself. He started off by telling me about himself and where he studied and how long he's been in this field. He then asked questions about me and my health problems and the experiences I've been through battling my weight.
He went over the types of surgery that are available and then he detailed the surgery that he would perform and why he only perform two out of the ones we discussed. He also discussed how this surgery should be used as mean to changing the bad eating habits that I've been experiencing in the past. He also discussed the risks of the surgery and told me that I had time to think about if this is what I really wanted to do. He encourgaged me to do more research and talk to many different people to get a variety of opinions.
Dr. Burrowes was very patient and took his time explaining the procedure (before and aftercare). On a scale of one to ten. HE GETS A TEN, so far!
He was wonderful. He spent a long time w/ me and answered every question that i had. He acted as though i was his only pt. The office wasn't too hard to find, but the waiting area is small. Everyone seemed nice and helpful. It was an ALL DAY experience from 11;15- 2;40, but worth it and not too bad. He truly seems passionate about his work and has helped write legislation requiring insurance coverage for obesity and mo. He prefers to the FOBI procedure, but will do others if its unaffordable (4000.00 that ins. will not pay). He has lots of pictures of before and after success stories. I have heard from his pts personally taht he is wonderful in the hospital too. Overall at this stage I would rate him Exceptional.
Post op: Dr. Burrows is still wonderful as is his partner Dr. Kaze (I am not sure how they spell his name). the only problem is the waiting..... sometimes its 2 to 3 hours to see him. That gets old quick but otherwise everyone is pretty nice. Monica always seem to be in a bad mood, but the others are very nice.
