Fresno Heart and Surgical Hospital Organization
Dr. Boone knows what he is doing. If you have questions, he answers them. He has a very warm smile and I found his extensive knowledge combined with his smile to be very reasurring. As busy as he is he made me feel as though I was his only patient. I highly recommend him to anyone considering this surgery.
Dr. Boone is soft spoken, quiet. He trys to answer all your questions. His office staff is very helpful and curtious. When complications pop up it sometimes takes a long time (a couple of months in my case) to get help to solve the problem. I want future patients to know to speak up strongly and frequently in regards to any concerns or problems you may be having before or after the surgery. Sometimes it takes a lot of convincing to get the doctor and his staff to respond to you. Dr. Boone has you come to his office about once a month for the first three months after surgery and then there is a checkup three months later. Aftercare of a patient is pretty much up to him or her. There does not seem to be any structured aftercare program other than an instructional sheet given to you by the doctor's office. The risks of surgery are mentioned in a group required presurgery meeting. Other than that you are again on your own. Dr. Boone on a ten to one scale as a surgeon he knows what he is doing, probably a nine. As far as aftercare, my personal experience was very frustrating. It is hard to convince people to give you the help you feel you deserve. Overall rating maybe a five. His surgical competence is his greatest asset.
Although my meeting with him was very brief, I'm very confident in my choice to have my surgery with Dr. Higa. I've read so much about him and he is one of the leading surgeons for bariatric surgery. His office staff have been very helpful.
Just a note, however. It is very difficult to get someone on the phone at Dr. Higa's office. I tried to get my consult scheduled for 2 1/2 months before I actually got one. It was very frustrating and I almost gave up. Thankfully, my primary doctor was very active in helping me get my consult and after her office finally got in contact with Dr. Higa's office, I got my consult scheduled.
My first impression of Dr. Higa was WOW !! I'd been refered by several other bariatric surgeons for a revision to my 19 year old surgery. When I finally met him I didn't expect such a young good looking man another WOW. At one point I was crying because some of the problems I'm having and talking Higa looked at me and winked and said " I'm going to take care of you kid" What a great guy!
Brenda, Dr. Higa's assistant is wonderful I can't say enough good things about her, she has walked me through all this and made me feel confident at times I was terrified.
I'm having surgery on 4/22/2005 I'll post more after that. One thing I do want to say is I've seen bariatric surgeons all over California and every doctor told me they couldn't fix my problem or they were not confident enough in their skill to fix my problem... every single doctor refered me to Dr. Higa.... need I say more
I have only met Dr. Boone once but I immediately felt comfortable with him and I liked hime ver much. His office staff is kind and helpful. Before you get a consultation appointment with him, you must attend one of his orientations in which he describes the different types of weight loss surgeries and the benefits and drawbacks of each type. He also gives a lot of statistics regarding successes and failures. He explains the procedures from beginning to end. He shows lots of pictures. By the time you leave you have a pretty good idea of everything that is involved. He also has a great sense of humor. As I know more I will let you know.
My first impression of Dr Higa was complete awe. He conducted the WLS seminar and he had a great attitude about what WLS means to a patients overall health. My DH went with me and liked him right away. During the presention, He whispered to me that he wanted him to be my surgeon. I was feeling the same thing. So I made sure I requested him, and I made up my mind that I would wait as long a necessary to have him. I don't have anything negative to say about him and his staff. Everyone was wonderful!
I had the best surgeon! Dr. Higa was very caring and sensitive to all my needs. He has great "bedside manners" and was very supportive. I had/have complete faith in him as a surgeon. He was scheduled to go on vacation the day after my surgery and he came in to see me twice at the hospital. He could have sent another doctor in to see me, but he came instead. I think that says a lot about him. I wold recommend Dr. Higa to anybody!
Well, the first time I met Dr. Higa was at the seminar. He was very informative. He let us know about the diffrent kinds of surgery's and the procedure he uses. He let us know about the complications and all the risk factors. He stressed that this was not a quick fix that this was a tool for us to use and if used correctly will have positive results. He also let us know about the benefits of this surgery. The seminar answered all my questions, that's how much information he gave us. He left no question unaswered. I met him in person at my consult. he was very nice, and we even had a laugh. I feel he is very knowledgeable about this type of surgery. I will see him again for my Pre-op, and then my surgery. I will let you know more then.
Very professional. Office staff is courteous and efficient. He tends to be brief and to the point. He is excellent in his field. The busiest surgeon in his office. The office has classes that assist with aftercare, but I attend one locally, closer to my residence. I cannot comment on the aftercare for his program as I am from out of the area. The risks of the surgery were addressed in a video, through a packet and via interviews with him and various office staff. Overall, I would rate him an A+. I believe surgical competence is worth more than bedside manner, however both are necessary for patience feeling of security.
