Swedish Medical Center (COE) Hospital
I loved the nurses. I thought it was great. The only thing aobut privacy was that the nurses would come into the bathroom without knocking. That bugged me but I was drugged and couldn't say much. Still it was a great stay at Hotel Swedish. I also thought that the nurses answered the call lights very quickly. Being a nursing student I have seen some people wait 10 minutes. These nurses generally answerwed withing a couple of minutes. I was impressed
I had a wonderful team of nurses. techs and respiratory therapists. From pre-op to my room everyone was kind and considerate. I only had a couple of problems. The first respiratory therapist didn't reconnect me to my 5 liters of oxygen after giving me my first treatment and by the time the tech came to do my pulse ox I was down to 59. The other was on my last day the floor I was on was extremely busy and I didn't get pain meds when I requested them the first time.
I thought that the hospital room was somewhat dirty. My roommate was a nightmare and I couldn't be moved. She was talked to several times by the nurses although it didn't make a differance. I was suprised that there were no rules regarding quite time or anything like that. Getting suger free jello and juice was a challange. I was sent the wrong food tray several times.
The only complaint I have is with the technicians. The Xray techs who checked for leaks the day after my surgery were horrible, uncaring, rude people. They made comments about my size and had no communication skills. I also had ultrasounds on my legs to make sure I didn't have blood clots. He was just completely unfriendly. He left me sitting in the hall for about 20 minutes after he was done and didn't tell anyone I was there. The girl who pushed my chair finally wandered by and was surprised to see me.
Most things about Swedish were acceptable or good. The nurses were very good for the most part, although because I wound up in the Orthopedic floor, they didn't have alot of experience with Gastric Bypass patients. I have a small problem with Nutrition Services-- I got sugar jello and juice with each meal, and GB patients can't eat that! And GB patients in general don't have sodium restrictions, so I wish they wouldn't have sent me the awful low sodium broth. It would be much more helpful if they would send up sugar-free popsicles and diet juice or tea, although I did get Equal rather than sugar. The major problem I had was with the radiology department. I not only had the same experience as someone else had with being left in the hall without my pain-killer button, but the tech just stood and watched as I cried out with pain and struggled to move myself from the stretcher to the x-ray table, and didn't make any move to help me or have anyone else help me. She and the other person running that machine were also very rough with me, yanking my tubes around in a way that was very painful. Then they tried to blame this on my surgeon, saying that all his patients have IV lines that are too short! Have you ever heard anything so ridiculous? The absolute worst was that the person wheeled the stretcher away and my urinary catheter was caught on it, causing it to 1. jerk painfully and 2. pop open, spilling urine onto the table, my leg and my surgical sock! If I had been able to get up, that woman would have been on the ground! The people who run the flouroscope are incompetent, careless and rough, and they spend their time making excuses for themselves. I am going to pursue a complaint with the hospital over this incident. I would go back to Swedish *only* if I didn't have to go through their Radiology department.
The hospital was great. They were wonderful to my family that waited all day. Once I did get a room (which was not shared) all my brother did was ask for a private room and within one hour they moved me over. Now mostly that had to do with the day I went in it was slow with the rooms opened. So if you go - just ask. They try to put people in private rooms if space allows and the patient will be in more than two days. The only thing is a semi-private rooms as VERY small and noise and there was one nurse on staff that had issues responding - but that was across the board with other patients she had too....all the other nurses were just wonderful...and the techs CPNs were great too for help!
