Surgical Weight Loss at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital
The first time that I saw Dr. LePort was at a talk that he gives to all of his new patients. I didn't really give his appearance a lot of thought.
Still don't.
I had a really difficult time with the office staff. I found out a week before my scheduled surgery date that they had "lost" my file. I then had a months worth of pre-op requirements to cram into the last week. Total nightmare. Once I got the office manager involved, things moved very quickly and efficiently.
I am particularly pleased that he didn't kill me! ;)
Dr. LePort is a great surgeon, just don't expect a lot of hand-holding...not really his style.
He is really big on after-care.
Very structured.
He was really straightforward about the risks involved. He answered all of my questions, and didn't sugar-coat anything. I really appreciated that.
Dr. LePort was great! As I said, he was blunt and honest and best of all, I'm here 6 weeks later so I survived it!
I have friends and family for emotional support. I wany my surgeon to be that kid that didn't have a soial life in school. I don't really care too much about their personality as long as they know what they are doing and do it well.
I absolutely loved my surgeon, my nutritionalist (DeeDee) and the nurses were awsome. Especially Robert, Katherine, Lisa and many others that I can't remeber their names. The P.A.'s seemed to talk too fast when they came in, and I had the feeling they were rushing. They probably were, because they seemed to be a little short staffed. Things were quiet, and everyone was smiling and eager to help out with anything. I shut my door when I was able to get out of bed, and they kept it shut when they left. The nurses were quick to respond to my "call" button, and really great with trying to make me comfortable. I never felt alone, which is great, because a stay in the hospital can be a scarey thing. The nurses were happy to just smile and chat, and pat my hand, even if it was 3:00 in the morning. I don't want to go back to a hospital ever, but if I had too, I would go there!
Most of the nurses in the bariatric unit were well equipped, informed, helpful, and caring when it came to pain, and anything else that was needed. I did run into a problem with one of the night nurses when it came to giving me pain medication that was prescribed by the doctor, as she was afraid that I would "overdose" because no one had told me that the morphiene machine I had did not deliver the drug unless I pressed the button (previous to this, the experience I have had with this machine was that a certain amount was administered automatically, but I could get a little extra boost by pressing the button should I be in more pain. I also had orders from my doctor to give me demerol on a 3 hour schedule. This particular nurse did not want to give me the demerol when I asked for it, as I had just given myself the morphiene through the machine. She would not call my doctor to ask him, and I was in a lot of unnecessary pain until the next shift of nurses came in and remedied the situation. Other than that, I found the nursing staff, the nurse's aids, and everyone else very accommodating, helpful, friendly, and felt that they were really a big part of my "team".
Surgeon was great. Hospital care was up and down. Pre op was ok, not real impressive. Surgery staff was good to excellent. Anesthesia staff was just OK. ICU overall was a nightmare. One excellent nurse named Patty. In room help depended on day and shift. Debbie, RN was the best. Helpful, careful and accomodating. CNA's were often not so hot. One was great, Bryan from Surinam.
The hospital was OK, but could have been better in care. Very accomodating to visitors.
Dr LePort can come off a little detached at first, but he isn't really detached. Meaning the more you interact with him, see him at a group support meeting on a Monday or attend one of his Drs' Talks you will soon find out that he is extremely dedicated to his job as a bariatric surgeon. Dr. LePort is a very busy and caring surgeon. He has a caring staff and a great team of doctors who work with him both at Orange Coast Memorial and at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital. During my stay at the hospital, he visited me briefly before surgery, asking about my concerns. After the surgery he spoke with my Mother and let her know how things went in a prompt fashion. Someone from his team visited every day. Dr. Leport also visited once after the surgery to check that everything was ok, and to see if I had any concerns.
Dr. LePort stresses aftercare, and has organized weekly meetings at Orange Coast Memorial Hospital for the first 4 Mondays of every Month from 6:30 to 8:30. They are surpervised by Dr. Diane LeMont. He will even attend a meeting once a month and share information or have one another member of his surgical team share. These meetings are free and open to all- just looking, pre-op and of course post-op.
Dr. LePort is very upfront about the risks of surgery and the benefits of surgery... when one follows the rules. Meaning use the tool and eat appropriately. I would rate Dr. LePort as an excellent surgeon and caring doctor.
