St. Luke's Medical Center (COE) Hospital
I thought St. Lukes was a great hospital. I know there are mixed reviews out there, but my experience was awesome. I think a person does need to know that they need to take it upon themselves to get up and walk, to breath into your spirometer, ask for pain medicine. But if you have a good attitude going in and take responsibility, I think your stay will be excellent.
Other than the hospital being old and not very nice to look at, the nursing staff of this hospital is the only thing I really have a complaint about. I rarely saw a nurse and when I did, they were very abrupt and not very helpful at all. I actually saw my doctor's partner and the Apollo College students that took my vital signs much more often than I saw a nurse. If I had to do it over again, I'd have the surgery at the Bariatric Center at Banner Good Samaritan Hospital.
Due to some of the posts on here, I was a little bit afraid going into this but, I thought the nursing staff was awesome, preop and during my stay. My IV had problems (I do not have good veins) and so they had to take it out, meaning no more morphine pump for me. They then started me on liquid pain medication. I could have it every three hours. Each time I asked for the medication (I didn't need it more often than than the three hours), they would bring it right in, like within seconds! The first night there, my nurse, Mary, was unbelievable. My roommate had had the surgery the same day I had and Mary was in the room almost the entire night helping each of us, get to the bathroom, get up for our walks, etc. The next two nights there were the same. Very good nursing staff, and very attentive! Trish was an awesome day nurse, always checking and quick to answer! No complaints here!
The hospital is a good one. The only downer i have is that they were doing some renovations on the place and you could hear jack hammers very loudly in the pre-op room, not very relaxing...Then in my room i could hear it thru the walls as well. Also the staff seems to be great but i learned that if i wanted something to ring for it about 20 mins in advance and then to give a reminder call after about 10 mins of waiting. They seem like a busy staff.
