St. Luke's Medical Center (COE) Hospital
The only bad part about my stay at the hospital was that there was 2 nurses in the recovery wing that didn't want to bring me my pain meds on time. One argued with me, saying that I needed to realize that WLS was painfull. I told her I was aloud pain meds every 4 hours, it had been 5 and I was hurting bad! She brought them to me an hour after that. The other nurse just never came back.
I stayed in this hospital after surgery and then went to work there afterwards. I see both the positive and negative things from both sides.
As a patient, I feel the staff, even though they were seriously understaffed were more then helpful and attentive.
After working in healthcare for so many years, I personally try to do as much for myself as possible. I find that alot of patients come to the hospital expecting to be waited on, and coddled. I have heard comments form patients sayig that they pressed their nurse call lights. and didn't get what they wanted for over five minutes. On the professional side, some patients want a nurse to come in only to move a pitcher of water from one side of the bedside table to the other. When staff are outnumbered on average six to one, it is difficult to take care of some people who are too demanding and feel they should be trated as if this stay was at a health spa.
In general I feel this hospital had my best interest in mind and the staff was good to me. I would definately stay there again.
Did not have enough large gowns & gown after surgery soiled with blood & was not given another until time to shower the next day. Had to walk around in bloody one.
Did not have a shower in the room big enough to turn around in. Later I saw other large showers down the hall but was not made aware of them when I mentioned it was too hard to take a shower in my room.
Night nurse, 1st night took tooo long to respond. Next night I was on my own because I was not hooked up to anything a nurse would have to take apart for me to go to the bathroom or walk.
I was suppose to walk every two hours to keep from getting blood clots. I had to push the botton to notify the nurse to come unhook me from the machines so I could walk and one time I had to wait for 45 minutes and the nurse was the rudest nurse I have ever seen and I demanded another nurse. She didn't take off my oxygen and said "there you go." My IV pole was entangled in cords and I had just had surgery a few hours before this and I asked her "do we need to remove this oxygen?" She said, "I would if I were you, or you will hang yourself." When I said to her, "excuse me, I just had surgery a few hours ago," she said, "I know, why don't you take care of my patients and I will lay here and rest." I couldn't believe it -- I told her that I thought she was the rudest nurse I have ever seen and that I did not want her for my nurse. I told her that I was a self-pay and was paying nearly $15,00 for a two-night stay there and that after surgery, I would like a little help getting my IV pole untangled.
