St. Luke's Medical Center (COE) Hospital
In the year 2006 I returned and Dr. Zahn did a tummy tuck at the same hospital(St. Lukes) I prepaid for the surgery both to the dr. & Hospital. The hospital proceeded to charge me an extra $25,000 for my surgery nothing extra occured during my surgery , the hospital was just trying to make extra money!! would not reccomend since this happened.
I could have been dead for hurs before anyone would have known. No none ever asked me if I needed anything unless I called them and then I had to call twice. I never even recieved water & ice without asking. They never provided me with any toiletries, tooth brush etc. It was one of the worst experiences I have ever had in my life and at such a vulnerable stage I felt totally neglected and abandoned by the staff of this hospital.
The nursing staff during the week was good & I liked their treatment & service. The weekend staff was terrible, I would wake up to cold food, tv was so bad it was like not having one--bad reception. Nurses would listen to what I tried telling them during shower & Last, Not Once was my wounds under stomach changed & redressed.
I was in a room with a homeless woman. She was in the hospital for ulcers,etc..I felt since i had good insurance i should have been in a room with someone who had the surgery. I couldnt understand why i was in the bariatric ward however my neighbor didn't have the surgery. She bleed several times in the bathroom. I didn't have a good experience at all. I was also told we were to receive a goody bag. The goody bag consist of consist of a picture frame, sippy cup, sports bottle, baby spoon and fork. The nurses advised the goodie bag has been out of stock for three months. If you have a good health insurance and want the best hospital stay away from st. lukes!!!
I can't say enough good things about my night nurses, they were absolutely wonderful. My day nurse however didn't speak english that well and she seemed forgetful. I would have to remind her several times about my requests and she would apologize for forgetting. I paid extra for a private room so that my husband could stay with me in the hospital. However, after asking many staff members, we never received a recliner or fold up bed for him to sleep on. So needless to say, I was pretty upset that I had wasted $164 for a private room for nothing. Also, this is the nosiest hospital that I've ever stayed in. At 6am in the morning and at 9pm at night, there was someone outside my door vacuuming! Couldn't that have been done at a better time! I kept closing my door because of the noise and staff would walk in and say oh wrong room and walk out leaving the door open. This was very frustrating considering it was painful for me to get out of bed to close it again. The beds and most medical equipment are not for obese patients. I had to get two upper GI's and my body barely fit on the thing, so there was no room for my arms. And I'm one of the smaller bariatric patients. Clearly, the hospital needs to invest in machines build for overweight patients, if they are going to operate a bariatric wing.
Make certain that you demand what you NEED. Your visitors may end up feeling as though they are staff because the staff isn't around much. I was up to 22 hours immediately post op with no pain meds because they were leaking onto the floor...I was told over and over again after complaining of intense pain, that I shouldn't feel so awful. Then my SISTER saw the puddle, and the proverbial "you know what" hit the FAN.
