Roger Williams Medical Center Bariatrics Hospital
Dr. Pohl was great during my initial consult. He spent quite a bit of time explaining the surgery to me. He told me about the benefits and the risks etc. I got my approval and his office staff has been helpful telling me how to set up my appointments etc. I don;t have my official date yet but am hoping for the end of August.
6/20/02- First impression was great. I walked in with my notebook full of questions and he patiently answered all of them. He was honest, smart, warm and friendly. The office staff seemed kind and easy to work with. Very pleased thus far.
7/11/02- My next visit with Dr. Pohl was just as nice as my previous visit. My daughter (15 years old) attended this visit with me. He was great with her-- gave her the opportunity to answer any questions that she may have. He continues to impress me. I feel confident that I have made correct choice of Physicians. The office staff has been fabulous! I think I called them at least one time per day for two weeks and they never tired of my relentless pushing to speed things up. They manage to pull off sweet and professional.
All the nursing personnel were very kind and nice. Problems was the lack of staff. Unless you complained you never saw a nurse for hours. I am a nurse myself so I know how busy everyone can be when there is a really sick patient. I think most of my problems was that I didn't want to bother anyone and I got loss in the shuffle. By the 2nd day my IV was out so I really could do things myself. I guess I expected the care I use to give as a nurse!
My first impression of Dr. Pohl was that of a professional, who was very knowledgable in this type of surgery. He was very honest going over risks, and also reasons as to why the surgery would not work,he helped me to understand it was just a tool, not a cure. The office staff was great, I was a real pain because I was on a tight time budget, they were patient and kind all the time. I could not have asked for a better surgeon, great surgical competence and bedside manner.
My first impression of Dr. Pohl was very positive. He answered all of my questions and explained his process thoroughly. I am now post-op and like him even more! The day after surgery, I had my swallow test and a leak was detected. Dr. Pohl discussed my options with me and we decided to go back in for surgery to detect and repair the leak. Nothing was detected, but I was still happy that we did the surgery. The small setback was better, for me, than dealing with the "thought" of having a leak and progressing with my recovery much slower. Dr. Pohl was great every step of the way. He also has a fabulous reputation with the nursing staff at Roger Williams. They had great things to say about him, his skills, and his bedside manner. As a matter of fact, he was running a little late one morning and called my nurse to let her know so I wouldn't be concerned that he was coming. He came to visit me every day in the hospital, even Sat and Sun! He is truly a professional and I would recommend him 100x's over!
My first impression of Dr. Pohl was that he was very personable. He made me feel very compfortable and explained the procedure as well as the risks very thoroughly. He explained to me that he was giving me a "tool" to work with, not a miracle and discussed the importance of aftercare. He also encourages his patients to attend a support group before surgery so they know what to expect afterwards. His office staff was absolutely wonderful, very friendly and always gets back to me promptly. I am extremely confident in my choice and would recommend him to anyone in need of this surgery!
The only thing I was displeased about was the ER-I ended up back in the ER a few days after release and I was in terrible pain and was not taken in for quite a while and there was no one waiting and noone to be found to take my information. Once I got in the rooms were dirty, there was blood on the floor, I was given pain meds and sent home-my white blood cell count was very high and I was told later I never should have been released-I was brought back in a few hours later and my surgeon was there so he took me right in. I was waiting to have a CT scan and was forgotten about in a hallway next to an open door in winter time for over an hour-and I had to call my surgeons office to page him to tell him I was forgotten about and was given no pain meds. They also made me drink TANG before the CT Scan and as a bypass patient I can't have sugar, and this caused me to vomit and be nautious for quite a while. I had severe abdominal pain that was not helped by additional vomitting. The Hospital itself was wonderful, I had great care and never had problems with pain or anything-the ER is a whole different story.
