Dr. Boorse operated on me for an emergency appendectomey a few years ago. He did an excellent job and I felt I was treated in a caring way with respect. When I found out via an advertisement he was preforming RNY surgery I knew right away this was what I wanted to do. I felt secure in knowing this surgeon. The only negative is the long wait. First to get a consultation and then to get a surgery date. It just shows the demand for surgery and the limited surgeons available. Dr. Boorse is top in lap surgery at Lehigh Valley Hopspital and I feel it is well worth the wait. Also, I'm sure he gains more experience and knowledge with each surgery. I was pretty well informed when I had my consultation but he still drew diagrams and told about all the posible complications etc. I also was given a packet with a complete post-op diet and information on a local support group and web sites. His office staff has also been nice and helpful!

My first impression of Dr. Boorse was he is a very knowledgable surgeon. He was very professional and right to the point. He treated me with dignity and respect and did not make me feel uncomfortable at all. He explained the surgery and drew pictures to show me what he was going to do. He also explained how he decides proximal vs distal depending on each individuals needs. I had three pages of questions, most of which he answered before I asked. He was patient and took the time to answer all my questions and did not make me feel rushed. His office staff appears to know what they are doing. The surgical scheduler knows what is expected from the insurance company and so far has been helpful in moving things along in a timely manner. I had a brief unpleasant encounter with one of the nurses but she was much more pleasant and kind during my second visit. I was given a copy of the after care diet. They do not have a specific after care program. Dr. Boorse seems to care about the individual needs of his patients. I have already recommended him to a few friends. (He's also a general surgeon.)

Probably the best hospital in the area.

Well I forgot to update this part of the page. Dr. Boorse, he awesome! He very honest and open. My mom went with me and he really made us feel at ease. Answered all our questions. Reasured me that he takes every precaution possible and I highly recommend him to all. Plus he's really kind of "cute", especially those white teeth! The office personnel was ok. I guess I caught them on a bad day. Seemed like they were all stressing or something. Can't wait for answer from insurance.

I met Dr. Boorse at a WLS seminar/support group meeting at Lehigh Valley Hospital on May 9th. He is terrific! He has a sense of humor and he completely detailed the entire RNY procedure for everyone, drawing pictures and getting into the nitty gritty of everything. I even shook his hand as I left. I couldn't help thinking that I was shaking the hand of the man that will evenutally save my life. It was surreal!

I can't wait for my actual consultation with him. In fact, I can't wait till his office calls me to tell me when the consultation will be. I'm so tired of waiting for this live-saving process to truly begin.

So far the worst that I can say about Dr. Boorse is that it takes so long to become his patient. I would appreciate having a date for consultation, even if the date is October of next year. I just need to have a date to hang on to. I feel like I'm in limbo right now. It isn't a nice feeling, to say the least

12/3/02 Well, I finally had my consultation with Dr. Boorse. After waiting 8 months to see him, it was ALMOST anticlimactic. I didn't really have very many questions for him because I've been researching for so long, but he did answer the ones I had and made me feel very confident in his abilities.

Dr. Boorse's staff is very professional and efficient. Maybe they'll get warmer as I get to know them. :)

The worst thing about Dr. Boorse is that he's so busy, so it takes a long time to see him; but then again, that's also a positive, because it means he has plenty of experience.

He very carefully went over all the possible risks of surgery. He called it the "scary part."

I'd rate him 10 out of 10.

Surgical cometence, to me, is the MOST important thing. I don't need to think my surgeon likes me, and I don't need a drinking buddy. I need to be alive and healthy for my husband and my kids and myself.

Dr. Boorse is great. He spent a lot of time going over all aspects of my disease, not just focusing on the surgery. He put me at ease, while at the same time highlighting the risks involved. His mannerism is friendly and involved. I would recommend him to anyone.

I also have to praise his office staff. Everyone in the office seems to care. They have the patience of saints to deal with all the cr_p that the insurance company gives them. I hate to think how much time they spent on the phone.

I have been provided the right amount of information on the surgery and the after surgery care. I will be meeting with a dietician at the hospital, although I have already been given a document outlining the recommended approach. The office also pointed me to appropriate web sites (like here) for supplemental support and information.

I also want to say something about the hospital (Lehigh Valley). I just went through my pre-admission testing/interview. Everyone there was very encouraging and positive. They were excited for me and I was encouraged by their enthusiasm.

Negatives, mmmmmm.... well, because of the demand in the area it takes far too long to get in and to make this happen. Expect this to take many months from the point your referring physician gives the ok. From my current understanding, I suspect the aftercare program could be a little stronger. Some other surgeons I considered seem to have more staff focused on aftercare, but having not gotten there yet I'm not sure if it's the right balance or not. I keep you informed.

Finally I want to say something about another surgeon in the Lehigh Valley, Dr. Peter Rovito. I would not recommend him to anyone. I was originally referred to him. I went through all the hassles with the insurance, got approval, and had a date. Then he decided he didn't want to do the surgery anymore. He/his office did nothing to help me out in finding a new surgeon or anything. They left me standing out in the cold. No compassion and semi-rude throughout the whole process. I should have known, my initial meeting with him left me with the impression that he was shallow and most focused on the money, not the patient. He reminded me of the plastic surgeon at the end of the "Doc Hollywood" movie. I understand he has started doing the surgery again, but of course they didn't bother calling any old patients that they left hanging. My advice is stay away. Call Dr. Boorse, you may have to wait a while but you'll be glad you did.

I think the nurse's do not have enough time to spend with the patients. They did not encourage me to cough, deep breath or walk. I knew to do this and pushed myself. On one occasion I had to wait 40 minutes for pain medication and was crying in pain till I was given it. All of the other nurses were so sweet though. I understand their predicament. Hospitals have to see how important professional nursing care is to patients. I am thankful that I had family there to help me. This hospital sucks.

I did not have a good stay at this hospital at all. The people I met before surgery and in recovery were great. The nurses and others that I met when I first got to my room and during the night were great too. The nurses and others on my second day were pretty darn dreadful. I was pretty much ignored. I still had diarrhea from the bowel prep I had taken. When I had a small accident because I could get out of bed fast enough the woman who came in(not sure if she was a nurse) just looked at me and threw a new gown and one of those bed pads on the bed and then walked out. No offer to help me to the bathroom and I had to change my bed pad myself. I was not helped out of bed to walk the halls... not even once. The one nurse(a male) told me I could not ve discharged until I urinated. Unfortunately everytime I went to the bathroom so diarhhea got in the little cup thing and he actually almost yelled at me. He said "Look, I can't tell if you urinated or not you have to be more careful when you go!" Yes, he said it like he was yelling at a child. I have to go to the same hospital for my upcoming plastic surgery and I am not looking forward to it at all. Just those 10 or so hours during the second day tainted my whole view of the hospital. A patient should never be treated like that no matter how busy or overworked the staff is.
