California Pacific Medical Center (COE) Hospital
My RNY procedure was scheduled for 7:30am on Monday, 8/5/02, which meant that my friend and I had to be at the hospital by 6am. I know many of you live by yourself, and hate asking others for help, but please be kind to yourself, and ask someone to come to the hospital with you on the day of your surgery. It made all the difference in the world to have someone to keep me company until it was "time."
Although all the nurses were obviously extremely overworked and sometimes overwhelmed, for the most part, I had wonderful nurses at CPMC (thanks Geoffrey, Winnie, Nancy, and Khin!!!). However, the nurses in the recovery room left a lot to be desired. There was one male nurse (I think he was a nurse, but I'm not sure) who was really mean. I remember moaning, "I feel nauseous, and I can't breathe...!!!" His response was a very curt, gruff, "Relax. You're breathing. The machine says you're breathing!" The hospital was packed, so my friend said it was late Monday afternoon before I was wheeled into my room at the hospital on the fourth floor.
I also discovered that "smells" affected me much differently than before. I got nauseous just "smelling" my roommate's nasty meal. I wish I had had the foresight to research and request a private room. If the price differential isn't huge, I'd definitely recommend a private room. My roommate had visitors way past visiting hours on Monday night when I was just miserable from the morphine, and I finally had to ask them to leave. After they left, she then watched t.v. (quite loudly) until past midnight!!! Do yourself a favor, and request a private room, even if you have to pay more. Trust me. It's well worth the extra cost. There was a private room on my wing that had an awesome view of the bay.
