Brigham and Women's Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Hospital
I was so so so drugged up I didn't know what was going on. I saw the cart and filled it wit all the linens. I didn't think anyithing of it. From everyone telling me this story. I was off and running with the cart and linens. They had to contact my DR and security. They calmed me down and I had to stay for a fourth day to make sure the next day I was mentally stable to know who I was. I did answer all the Pych. questions wrong the third day but on the fourth the answers were somewhat logical.
I had gotten home and had so much enery from the pain meds. I was on a liquid Viciden and flying doing all kinds of nesting. It was not bad at all with the pain control. The nurses did a very good job with that. Also I took out my G tube. I wasn't surpose to do that. But I can remember waking up to this funny thing down my throat and very uncomforable.
Well I figured that didn't belong there.
Out it came. my poor husband got blamed at one point until I said I pulled it out. Any patient in the medical field is never s good patient! They always want to know what is going on and to out smart the DRS and nurses.
I am sure they will not forget me and I will be forever in DR Robbinson
's book for disobient patients. But I am so glad he did the surgery and would have it done all over agian if I needed to!
When I had my first visit with Dr. Shikora I was in awe of him. He completely knew his stuff and answered all my questions before I even had a chance to ask. I left my visit with him feeling good about the surgery, and I am the biggest baby in the world not to mention the biggest worry wart! He made me feel at ease as he told me about both the risks and rewards of this surgery. Two days before my surgery, I got a call from his secretary asking if it would be ok to move my surgery out one day. I was to be done on a Wednesday and now was moved to Thursday. I agreed and hung up the phone. My phone rang again immediately after I hung up. It was his secty. again, Dr. Shikora himself wanted to explain why the surgery was being moved. He told me that there were a group of surgeons in Germany that were extremely impressed with his techniques in the surgery and they wanted to view a surgery via satellite. He asked if I wanted to be that patient, they would only see the iside of my stomach not me on the table and they would not know my name. I agreed and felt privilleged that my surgeon was being studied by surgeons in Germany. He also had a great bedside manner. If you are considering this surgery and you are looking for a surgeon I strongly reccommend NEMC the entire staff are wonderful!
Dr Robinson seemed very professional and made it seem like the surgery wouldn't be a problem for him. I am confident that he will do a great job. From the first time I call his office the staff was very nice and willing to help with any information they could offer. Gina his PA was wonderful in explaining what was going to happen and answered any questions I had. They are very big on following through with your aftercare. It is important to listen to dieticians and nutrionist, basically they are teaching you how to eat all over again. Gina did explain the risks and complications that could arise from this surgery and explained the percentages of patients this happens to. I think if you could combine the surgical competence and bedside manner you would have a very sought after surgeon. It did seem to happen very quickly but that is a very busy office. These are my opinions of my consultation.
Actually Dr.Shikora is the head of the Surgical team. My actual surgeon is Dr. Julie Kim. She was great and she explained the proceedure quite well. She is also assistant professor of surgery at TUFTS.The staff is absolutely wonderful and I would not change my experience. They inform you well about the surgery and the lifestyle change that I am about to embark on.They ahve provided me withe social, emotional and the physical supports that I need to start down this road to a healthier life. The aftercare program is great too. They require you to involve yourself in a small post-op support group for one year. They also have a mass post op group which is held monthly for all patients. They also have a staff of nutritionists, pgychologists, & HCPs. They more than prepare you for before and after your surgery. I have already gotten the meal plan for post op. And they let me know what to expect, before and after surgery. On a scale from one to ten I rate this team a ten. Bothe bedside manner and surgical comptence are great.
