Brigham and Women's Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Hospital
She is very well trained in laproscopic surgery. I researched her background and her fellowship training. Which included general surgery, laprascopic surgery, and pediatric laproscopic sugery on top of everything. As a physician I am aware of the levels of training required for proficiency in technique. I was well enough impressed.rnrnShe is very confident (what surgeon isn't). She is certianly pleasant enough.rnrnHer assistant Jane can be very helpfull. Can't say much for the rest of the staff I did not really interact with them..rnrnShe explained the risks well, and there was an excellent information session given by the surgical group that you are required to attend. They explained all the types of generally accepted obesity surgery, which between them they perform them all.rn It seemed to me the group as a whole really pushed Lap gastric bypass with roux en y. I have found US surgeons often do that.rn rnShe has a structured after care program.rnI would rate her highly so far. ;-)rnrnI would say her surgical competence is her defining credit.rnrnLast but not least, I was really happy to have a female surgeon. rnrnI am very happy with my outcome, I am thrilled that I have done this.rnrnI would reccomend her to anyone interested in obesity surgery.rnrnAgain these are my personal opinions, and impressions, the way I interpreted my experience.rn
My only complaint was that it was VERY noisy. I was woken up from a sound sleep many times due to professionals speaking to my roommate, turning on the room lights (not the individual light by a bed) and the noise in the halls. In my other hospital stays, at night people whisper… not the case here.
Nursing staff was excellent with my care… and that is what is really important!
As of this past Monday, it has been 8 years since I had a gastric bypass at NEMC, performed by Dr Scott Shikora. rnrnAll I can say is thank you to Dr Shikora for not only saving my life, but allowing me to learn what having a quality life is. I thought I knew, but before 10/19/98, I wasn't living, I was just existing. The whole experience was wonderful, from the initial appointment with Dr. Vogel, who walked me through the psychological issues that I'd be dealing with, to Dr Shikora who patiently explained the proceedure to me. rnrnI was the patient from hell and a complete pain in the ass, but the whole staff was wonderful.rnrnAll I can say is that if anyone has the opportunity to go to NEMC and deal with Dr Shikora's staff, than you're very, very lucky. He's one in a million.
Watch Dr. Vernon perform a banding (broadcast live July 27, 2005) at http://www.or-live.com/BrighamandWomens/1372/rnrnDr. Vernon put me at ease immediately. She was warm and inspired considerable confidence. Her office staff is fabulous and worked hard - and FAST! - to get my initial consult and additional appts scheduled in no time.
The only part I didn't care for was the pre-op area was jam packed. We were squeezed in with 48 other people. My sugery was also a couple of hours late but, my surgical team were very kind and made me feel at ease. My roomate was a blessing as well. All of my nurses were wonderful, overall I was pleased with the experiance.
So far throught the whole process Dr. Vernon has been wonderful. She truly has the best bedside manner of any Dr. I've ever had to deal with. Her whole staff is very efficient. The program that she is a part of at Brigham and Women's hospital is great. Nutritionists and surgeons all in one place. I can call one office to schedule my appointments. Dr. Vernon is also easy to reach by email. I've emailed her questions and she always get's back to me in a timely manner. I've very happy with my choice.
