Wayne English Bariatric Surgeon M.D.,F.A.C.S.
My surgeon, Dr. English, is the most caring person that I know. He could have chosen to turn me down for surgery because of the high risk that I was. I could have easily caused his office's sucess percent numbers to drop. I was in very bad health at the time. Dr. English knew that without the surgery I would not have made it much longer. I believe that he gave me the chance to live because of his compassionate nature. Dr. English took all necessary pre-op precautions for me and had me put into a rehabilitation center post-op for the best chance for me to recuperate. His office was very professional and all of the staff that I came across was very helpful and supportive. I call his office at least once a month to thank them for my new life. I would like to call him once a day I am so happy to be walking around again. I am living again! Thanks to Dr. English. I want to say that all of the doctors in this office are the most caring doctors I have ever come across. They are all concerned for each other's patients. They all come to our monthly support meetings and you can see how happy they are to be helping people have new and healthier lives.
I wish I could shout their names from the top of the world!! Their aftercare program is the best. We have all the help that we need - we have a nutritionist and a psychologist at every meeting helping us deal with our new lives. What more can you ask for?
I have spoken to many by-pass surgery patients and I can tell you that Dr. English's group is the best.
I like Dr. English since the first day I met with him. He is very knowledgeable and cares a lot about his patients. He also has a great bedside manner and a big heart. He is always willing to answer any questions you may have and you always have is fullest attention when he is around you. So far there is nothing that I dislike about him. Future patients should definitely feel safe and comfortable with Dr. Enlish. He visited me twice at the hospital and held my hand before surgery and reassured me that everything was going to be fine. He performed my surgery in 60 minutes and I have never had any complications. Dr. English emphasizes aftercare and requests that you come to the support group meetings. He also sat with my husband to explain everything that I would be going through and how I would be feeling and stressed the importance of my husband's care for me before and after surgery. I would definitely give Dr, English a 10 for his surgical competence and bedside manner. He is definitely the best doctor I have ever met. I do not have anything negative to say about him at this time.
When I first met Dr English I was amazed at not only how young he was but at how gentle he seemed and how soft spoken he was. I met with him 3 times before my surgery and every time grew more and more comfortable with him. The morning of my surgery , when i was in pre-op, on the gurney, in a large mu mu style gown, freezing cold, having the IV in my arm and having to drink all sorts of nasty antacids and stuff, I was nervous like crazy. Dr English came into the room, took my hand in his, told me my surgery was in approx 5 minutes at 8 am and I should be in my room and awakened by noon. He then gave my hand a reassuring squeeze and said "See you soon!"
I never felt more comfortable in such a scary situation in my life!
He came to visit me that afternoon and then first thing the next morning. By the following day, I was released at 8 am, just as he promised. He was confident I was doing great and gave me a huge hug!!!Ever since the surgery he has been nothing shy of caring and attentive to any need or question I have had. The staff in his office is amazing too, always gets back to you right away and always willing to assist immediately with any emergency (i have only had mild ones I made too much of a big deal out of)
I was warned of all the ricks before the surgery as well as signed a very lenghty agreement as to what I was getting myself into. They let me know all of the possible risks I was taking.I went 10 days after surgery to get my staples out, then went back 3 weeks later, then at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and just saw him for my 9 month check up!!!
I would defenitely give him a 10 out of a 10!!!! I really have nothing negative to say, the only thing I can think of the slightest bit negative is about the nurses in the hospital in the bariactric wing were terrible and unattentive and fortunately that has nothing to do with Dr English's office.
I first e-mailed Dr. Hocking, and was very impressed that he replied in less that 24 hours (both times). I have an appointment for May 16, 2003. I may try a couple other surgeons to see if I can get a sooner appointment, but I feel very comfortable that he is at Shands.

I had my consult appointment with Dr. Hocking today. He is absolutely wonderful, and I have decided that I want him to do my surgery. He is a very warm, caring person. Not only is he the nicest doctor I've ever met (next to my primary), but one of the nicest people I have ever met. I am so glad that I went to see him afterall....all of my fears and doubts have faded away....9/8/03 Another change. Dr. Hocking ison medical leave indefinately, so I have chosen Dr. English in Ft. Lauderdale. Although I haven't met Dr. English yet, I met his partner who is just great...I like this group probably best of all....
My first impression of Dr. English I felt was very pleasant, I was made to feel at ease and comfortable with my decision and I could see the confidence and compassion in him. As time went on and the more I visited his office the more comfortable I felt.
The office staff was warm and friendly and so helpful, they did what it took to answer any questions or concerns I had, especially Becky and Arisha. There was nothing unsatisfactory about my experience with this Dr. and office staff.
If you decide to use Dr. English you will love him and his staff.
There is a support group the third tuesday of every month in the hospital located in the same parking lot of the office. And the Doctors and staff are always available for questions or health concerns before and after the surgery.
The risks of this surgery were made very clear to me. It is only natural to be very nervous in making a serious decision such as this and believe me I was nervous and at the same time I was at peace with my decision.
Dr. English is one of the most kind hearted, warm, and compassionate surgeons. I am extremely pleased with his bedside manner and how much he cares for his patients. He is very much concerned with his patients aftercare, but in my opinion, it's the patients responsibility to make the appts. because he should not have to force them. Overall, I rate his as an excellent physician and surgeon, he gives 110%. He is definitely a straight forward doctor, in that he does tell you of both the risks and rewards.
Dr. English was outstanding-excellent bedside manner, forthright w/o being brutal about the surgery-risks, complications etc. My liver was enlarged and he advised about dietary changes that would increase my chances of having a successful laproscopic procedure. I followed them-not completely, but made considerable changes, and did have a successful laproscopic procedure.
His nurse Arisha was excellent and followed up on all issues. Some people have reported some difficulty getting call backs from different office staff, but I had no difficulty over all. I am currently awaiting a call back and will up date this if prob occur.
Their office does have a monthly structured aftercare program, however, I live 4 hours from Ft. Lauderdale and will probably be using obesityhelp and perhaps a local support group.
Before getting set up for surgery, you must attend an info session that talks generally about the surgery, then a smaller group session where the group discusses their statistics, allows you to ask questions, and addresses causes of success and failure.
What I like most about this group is that they are VERY EXPERIENCED in laproscopic surgery and have excellent outcomes. Dr. Carresquilla was a pioneer in this surgery and Dr. English has done many hundreds laproscopically. In their practice only 2-3% are converted to open procedure. The other practices did open procedures 20-80% of the time. According to their stats 87% of their patients will maintain a weight loss of 50% of the weight they need to lose (this compares w/50% national average).
Dr. English is outstanding, would not hesitate to recommend him enthusiastically. Both bedside manner and competence are excellent.
