He is great! I am so glad that I have found him and his staff to work with. He made me feel very confident about my choices and is about the nicest man you will ever meet. The nurse pract. is awesome! I loved the meeting they had to go over the surgery and, they have a support group! All of his interns have been great also. I am thankful that someone had recommended him to me and that I had the chance to have my surgery with him and his team. I would recommened him to everyone I know. Sometimes you have to wait in the waiting room a little more than I would like, but in what doctors office don't you do that?? If you are still shopping around for a doctor at least go to one of their information meetings and meet him and his staff.
What was your first impression? He is very nice and explains everything to you.
How did your impression change over time? My impression of him has not changed. He is very caring and concerned for all his patients.
How would you describe his office staff? His office staff is the best. (Connie & Moniqe)
How much does he emphasize aftercare? His aftercare has been great.
How would you rate him overall? 1 to 10 with 10 being the best. I would give him a 10.
Which is better, surgical competence, bedside manner, or both great? I would say both are great.
My first inpression of Dr. Scarborough was he seemed very nice and easy to talk with. My impression of him has not changed from the few times I seen him. I would describe his office staff as nice, very busy, alittle to busy. What I leased like about my care was I wasn't given a nutritional consult before surgery. I would suggest future patients to be more aware of what is needed for the surgery before and after care. No emphansize was done on after care. I was told after first post op office visit to return in 3 months. I feel I have no after care, I have to look else where for after care. The risk of the surgery was explained well over two visits. I rate him at a 8. both Surgical competence and bedside manner was good.
I went to a seminar July 9 that he and Dr. Glorsky did. They are both younger than what I thought. They provided all the info you could ever want. Dr. Scarborough is very skilled and knowledgeable. I meet with him July 24 for my initial visit.
My surgeon, Terry Scarborough is awesome! Everyday in the hospital, he visited me at least twice. In ICU, he even had patience for me to spell things out and he found or called my parents everyday after he visited me. When he had to do emergency surgery on me the next day, he came to my parents with tears to tell them what was going on. The guy even gave us his cell phone number if we needed anything!
My first impression of Dr. Scarborough was thatat he was very nice and extremely caring. He never rushes me through an office visit. He continues to give me all the time I need to ask questions. My husband and I are very impressed with the honesty and knowledge that Dr. Scarborough posses. His staff is very kind and efficent. The down side is that Dr Scarsborough has been doing this for a relatively short amount of time, he does have two other surgeons assissting him on every surgery who have tons of experience.
He emphasizes aftercare and goes into great detail with his patients.
He has a very structured after care program. He also has a website that goes into great detail about after care.
One thing that I appreciated about my doctor is that he has been very honest with me about the risks of this (RNY)surgery. He has also told me that I couldn't be at a better hospital, and if anything bad happens that the very best doctors will be available to help assist me. My husband did not want me to have this surgery. I have been told by four doctors that if I don't have this surgery- I will die. Dr. Scarborough has made my husband and I feel very comfortable and prepared to have the surgery.
I feel he is very competent and he has a great bedside manner. I would rate him at a 9 on a 0-10 scale.
9/3/2002 - I met Dr. Scarborough today. He was pleasant. He seems to be a quiet, gentle man. He explained the procedure and wanted to be sure that I understood the risks. They have a patient that recently has had some critical complications (their first). He reassured me that they have added additional procedures that they expect will give better insight on leak detection. He reviewed the upper-GI and sonogram that I had in Aug. and said that everything looks fine for surgery. He will write a letter to the insurance, then I wait for approval before a date is scheduled. I was hoping to get a date set, but no go. Oh well, I've waited 47+ years what's a few more days - right:)
8/6/2002 - Today I met with Dr. Frank Moody of the University of Texas Health Science Center. He was incredible. He no longer performs the actual surgery, but has a team of Dr.s Terry Scarborough, Steven Glorsky and Erik Wilson that do Lap RNY (small pouch)-- see link.

Dr. Moody is experienced in both VBG and RNY. I've decided to change procedures. Since Dr. Harberg only performs VBG I will select a dr. from Dr. Moody's team to do the actual surgery. I'm so very much at peace with this decision. The next step is for me to have an upper GI and stomach x-ray before I can schedule an appointment with one of the dr.s.
5/3/2002 - I've met Dr. Harberg only once. He seemed to be very sincere. I got the impression that his most important message is that this surgery is not the answer, his favorite term is that it's simply a TOOL. How I personally deal with the help the surgery will provide me in managing my eating and therefore my weight will be my answer to this weight problem. He also was very intent on my understanding the risks associated with such an invasive procedure. No kidding in his office! He wants you to be able to commit to spending the rest of your life pulverizing the little bit of food you will be able to consume. Additionally, he wants to be sure you understand without a doubt that you must remain in a "diet and exercise" state for the remainder of your life. NO instant MIRACLES. He almost scarred me off. I did ask questions, and he was very well informed. He was very experienced in this procedure and believed that it is the best bariatric surgery in the long term. I'm not sure about his bedside manner, but I am confident that he's a thorough competent doctor. His office staff has been very pleasant to work with.
When I first went into Dr. Scarborough's office I did not think very highly of it. They where doing some remolding and all of the nurses where running around with there heads cut off. But for the first time in my life I did not feel out of place; everyone looked like me. (That is nice) I then sat down with my mother and we started talking to an older man that was there. He said that he had his surgery 1 month ago and said that he has lost so much weight. I asked him if there where any complications he said yes but not from the surgery. He told me that he went on a road trip and did not have anything to drink with him so there for he got very dehydrated and had to go back in to the hospitable. Other than that, he had nothing but nice things to say about it. When I went into the back I was weighed and I beat another high for me 320lbs. I went into the exam room where an intern came in and was talking to me about the surgery. I did not care for him but hey he is still a student. Soon after that Dr. Scarborough came in he told me all about my risk of the surgery and for me it was very mild do to my youth and no past medical problems. Dr. Scarborough is a very busy man but did stay about 20 min. or so it was very informative. I new at that time I wanted to have the surgery. On my way out I met Connie she gave me a card and told me I needed to go have some an upper GI and another test I forgot the name. Testing was testing :). After about 2 weeks latter I called Connie and asked her what do I need to do about getting my surgery? Connie told me my PCP needed to write a letter and send it to her. I called my PCP and was told to have Connie tell them the wording needs to be in the letter. Connie called my PCP and told them what to say in the letter. I called my PCP back about 2 weeks later and was told that no letter was on file and she did not remember any letter. That is when I got my mom on them and was told that a letter would be sent. Well when I was trying to get my PCP to get a letter sent Connie had sent a letter to my insurance (United Health Care Select Plus POS) and I was approved. Oh not that it matters but I did get my letter from my PCP 3 days latter. I was so happy one of the best Halloweens I have ever had. I went to an Educational meeting last night and was able to talk to a lot of people there. I have learned that a lot of people have a hard time with the paper work that insurance companies make you go through. My surgery date has been set for January the 10th. I am very excited about loosing some weight. I have to say that Connie is one of the hardest working people I have ever seen in the medical field.
