Initially Dr Myers was nice to me. After I became his patient and committed to the surgery he became very cold, even mean. I met for all of the pre-surgery meetings with the dietician, his physician - who does his pre-surgery physicals, I went through the cardiac testing and all the lab work. It took about 9 mos before everything was done and I could have the surgery.
Dr Myers didn't like that I questioned that we had to buy HIS "protein" mixes - which by the way were mostly high fructose corn syrup and tasted horrible. When I brought in an extremely high quality whey protein, and told him my primary care physician and the cardiac physician both felt it was a much better protein, he became irrationally angry, and told me to "get out", he said that "those protein mixes help fund (his) trips to Africa, where (he) treats people who can't afford surgery! (African's who can't afford bariatric treatment? How big of him!) After hearing that rant I did leave. I figured if he didn't have our best interest at heart, I didn't want to be a patient of his! His patients were ALL required to pay $500 upfront and in cash or check for this protein - which was so awful I still had some of it years later, and because it was mostly high fructose corn syrup had hardened! ALL of his patients also had to pay $500 upfront and in cash or check for a personal trainer who had been selected by Dr Myers, and you couldn't go see him until after your surgery, and after you'd healed enough to start your exercise program. Because of the complications of my surgery, and because Dr Myers was FIRED from Riverside not long after my surgery, I never got to see the personal trainer. I don't know if it's because Myers kept the $500 payments, or if the trainer wasn't honoring Myers contracts - either way, I was out an additional $1,000 between the trainer and the protein.
People might have glowing reports of Myers IF everything went smoothly, but if you question this man, and experience his rage, you might feel differently. If you're willing to pay for his travels, or be taken for cash payments which are unethical, then you might feel differently.
His office later called and pretty much begged me to come back and continue treatment, which I did because I was so far into the process. My surgery had already been scheduled, but I wish I'd gone elsewhere because he treated me horribly, and my surgery had severe complications.
I woke up after my surgery to find that he'd done an open procedure - not laparoscopic - which there was no reason for. I ended up in and out of the hospital for 6 months, and that entire time I could neither eat nor drink. I was on a central line for nutrition. When he FINALLY came to close the wound, his assistant, MIKE, swore to me that Myers NEVER gave the anesthetic shots in the wound, he gave them outside the wound - which is the appropriate way of doing it. I'm a nurse, so I was concerned because he seemed like a very vindictive man. What did he do? INSIDE the wound! It was SO painful, I screamed in pain! How did he react? He got right down within inches of my face and through gritted teeth, told me that I'd better shut my mouth, or he'd leave my wound open! WHO DOES THAT?! And then he told me he had someone much sicker than me waiting for him down in admitting. I told him to go to her! During this time there was another doctor who kept coming in and out of the room - which destroys any hope of a sterile field. I told him to stop - either stay or go, but by coming and going I was going to get an infection. Again, Myers told me to shut my mouth. He was just the most evil vile excuse for a human being I've ever come into contact with!
After he'd closed the wound the head of the nursing dept came to see me, and brought me paperwork. She very strongly encouraged me to report Myers. She said the entire nursing staff and some of the doctors had reported on his unethical behavior toward me. I took the paperwork, but never followed through because I was SO sick for suck a LONG time. I don't feel like I ever fully recovered from what he did to me, or the way he treated me, especially because there was just no reason for it. The nurse who did my central line was really nice, and she commented that there was a reason why Myers worked with people who were asleep! And then she and the other nurses laughed, and told me some of the things that he'd done - which didn't endear him to anyone on the staff. He's an abusive person, who has a problem with narcissism.
I definitively decided not to pursue the paperwork when Myers was FIRED from Riverside not long after my surgery. I was happy to say the least! He'd put me through pure hell! And I was glad to see he'd gotten his comeuppance! He had a practice North of Columbus for awhile, but I noticed recently he's left the state of Ohio, and has gone to PA! God help the people in PA! Here's your warning of what MIGHT happen!
My suggestion .... run, run, the other way as fast as you can! Find another doctor! There are plenty of good doctors out there, you don't need to go to this quack!!!
Oh, another thing Myers told me that was just plain mean, and knocked my socks off ... he actually said to me that I would gain all of my weight back! Who does that? Is that compassion? I was so flabbergasted, and hurt. I never wanted to see him again!
Dr. Stephan Myers is a life changer ! He has a sense of humor that really helps with feeling at ease with everything especially if you have anxiety. He goes over information thoroughly and he makes sure you are in understanding of any of the bariatric surgeries. The staff are very polite and I did not feel judged at all. I would reccommend Dr. Myers to anyone and a perfect 10 out of 10 stars.
I was very impressed by Dr. Stephan Myers when I attended my seminar he was there and greeted everyone who attended the seminar. I thought that was very nice of the Dr to take time out of his busy schedule to actually attend the seminar. His office staff are very helpful and I never feel like a burden when I call them with a problem or question. Dr Myers and his staff have a very professional bed side mannor. He expalins everything to you before you have the surgery. I am very happy with my Dr and his staff and would highly recommend him to anyone looking into having WLS.
Everyone on the staff is very passionate about weight loss surgery. I have been working with the dietitians in the program for the last 6 months as a requirement for my insurance approval and everyone has been extremely helpful.
My one concern during the 6 month prep was the number of nutritionists I worked with, 5 total, each one seemed to have a different area to stress so that was a bit challenging.
My other challenge was my vegetarian diet, none of the foods provided in the pre-surgery diet meet my needs, almost all contain gelatin. It has been a bit challenging working to figure out what my plan will be since I am "out of the box" for their normal program. I am still shocked that I am the only vegetarian they have encountered in all their surgeries.
I can't say enough about the excellent level of care and compassion that Dr Myers has given before, during and after surgery. I would recomend him highly to anyone wanting surgery. The Fresh Starts Bariatric program that he has created is well thought out and planned. I am 6 months out and very happy.
FreshStart Bariatrica at Riverside Methodist Hospital. Surgeon has office in Mansfield also. I have gone to seminar and had an informational meeting with Annie. Put $250 down. Have BC/BS FEP insurance. Total out of pocket will be just under $3000. They move fast. Info seminar on 2/14, fact and info meeting today 2/26, sceduled for day long appointment on 3/5. Day long includes physical, psych eval, dietition too. They seem to have this down to a very organized process. Everyone has been very professional and nice. Surgery on 7/20/2009 Went well. Recovery was quick and back to work in less than 3 weeks. I had excellent care from Freshstart Bariatrics , Dr. Myers and his staff. Did not go to Health Center for exercise (too far) so I got a $500 refund for that. The experience and professionalism of everyone was amazing. They have this down!
