Dr. Luttrell is a very compassionate person who
is geniunely interested in helping you achieve
your weight loss goals. When something goes
wrong, he feels your pain and has a great deal
of empathy for your situation.
His nurse, Mae is a ray of sunlight. She is
very sharp, has a quick wit, and always makes you
smile.
They always follow up with phone calls, they
have a bariatric center which follows you
closely, especially during the first year.
He was very through on all aspects of the
surgery, including risks associated with the
procedure, and I would not (and have not)
hesitated to let him operate on me again.
I had to have surgery 2/5/02 for adhesions which
had caused a partial small bowel obstruction,
which is one of the risks associated with
any surgery, and I could tell he felt as badly
as I did about having to go through another
surgery so soon after my November 15, 2001 surgery.
He made sure that I was comfortable in the
hospital and managed my pain very well.
Dr. Luttrell is one of a dying breed; a
doctor with not only good surgical skills, but
a wonderful compassionate nature that makes
you feel like you matter!
I had my consultation with Dr. Luttrell the day after Christmas. I had actually met him one other time years before when he operated on my grandmothers gall bladder. We loved him then and I love him now. I truly felt as if I were the only patient on earth that he had to deal with. He was so attentive and treated me with such respect and dignity. He was very kind and informative. He covered everything from A to Z. His nurse, Mei was the same way. It just reinforced the idea that I had made the right decision. Everything felt right. It's comforting to know that he and his staff will be following my care for the rest of my life.
My first impression of Dr. Luttrell was one
of confidence. Confidence in himself as a surgeon, and he transmitted that confidence to me that I would be in good hands. He is a kind, gentle man with a great bedside manner. He did not condemn my obesity. Rather he let me know that he was there to help fix my problem. Dr. Luttrell is very
interested in catching obesity before it causes other major physical complications for the patient. He was very careful to explain not only the good results that I could expect from the surgery, but he also went over the complications that could arise so that I could be prepared for anything that might happen. Dr. Luttrell also is very big on pain control. He doesn't expect you to just tolerate pain, but makes sure you are supplied with the correct medicine to make you comfortable even post op at home.
Dr. Luttrell has a very structured aftercare
program. He has an entire bariatric staff at
your disposal which includes nurses as well as nutritionists. You are given diet instructions, nutritional supplements, and close follow check points. I could not have asked for a more competent surgeon or bariatric staff, but to have them compassionate as well was an added plus. This is my personal view point due to my experiences with this surgery and the bariatric teams from Baptist & St. Vincent Hospitals in Little Rock, AR. I was fortunate enough not to experience any of the major complications that can arise from this surgery. I did experience lots of pain, some oozing at my incision site, constipation, and emotional ups and downs. However, I called the Bariatric Center when I felt like something needed to be addressed and was given information & encouragement as needed. This is not a surgery that can be taken lightly. It is definitely a lifestyle change! It doesn't happen overnight, but it is a light at the end of a long dark tunnel for me!
I met with Dr. Luttrell on September 26, 2001. My first impression of him was that he knew what he was doing. I liked him a lot because he doesn't do huge conferences. He likes to talk to patients one on one. He usually does two patients at one time, but when I had my consultation it was only me. I loved it. I learned more about the surgery, side effects and if he lost any patients to this surgery. The answer to the later was "No." He was so informative and he was patient with me and my questions. Also, my husband wewnt in there with me so that he could understand the operation more himself, and Dr. Luttrell kept asking him if he had any questions himself. I was pleased with that. The office staff was super nice. (and they have a HUGE office). Dr. Luttrell could not stress enough about after care. He is really big on that. He addressed the risks and how much my life will change afterwards. He went through the steps of procedures that he follows up until the surgery and he explained the surgery in great detail. I really like Dr. Luttrell and would recommend him to anyone.
Dr. Luttrell and his staff were very nice from my first visit. Each subsequent visit they were very helpful. Dr. Luttrell is very thorough in explaining the pros and cons and dangers of this surgery. I liked him from the start. 6 weeks out from surgery, I had a small infection in one of the stitches in my incision and I had hit a plateau and was very discouraged because I was not losing. He was so encouraging to me and made me realize that these things would happen. That I would lose at my own pace and that I should never compare my rate of loss to others. How right he was. He is both competent and has a great bedside manner. Best of both worlds. I would highly recommend him without hesitation. Though he has no formal aftercare program his staff is quick to return calls and to answer even the simplest question or concern quickly and caringly.
Dr. Luttrell is a very soft spoken and kind Doctor. He takes the time to listen and explain any questions you have. His office staff will work very hard with you and your insurance company to get the surgery approved. His office is a very nice and has a comfortable setting. The Hospital is plush and everyone make you feel great and work with you. Aftercare is very important to Dr. Luttrell and he will work will your personal Dr. to ensure the proper care for the rest of your life is given.
My first impression of Dr. Rex Luttrell was one of a very personable Doctor. He took the time to explain the surgery and the possible complications. He assured me that if I had any complications he would be there beside me. This impressed me.
His office staff has been great. They return my phone calls. Mae is his nurse. She has answered many of my questions that I have had following my visit. She encouraged me to call again if I have any more questions.
Dr. Luttrell explained that this would make me lose weight but it is up to me to keep it off.
Overall I would rate him as a great Surgeon. This may sound silly to some but I admire a Dr. who will read my records before coming into the room and then speaking to me instead of at me. I appreciate eye contact and good bedside manners. I had asked him about the quanity of Roux-En-Y surgeries he had performed. This was very important to me.
I brought a friend with me who is very skeptical about this type of surgery. When we left she was even more positive about this surgery.
These are my personal impressions of my first visit to Dr. Lutrell.
My surgeon is/was wonderful. He is very concerned about the health and welfare of his patients. His staff - the insurance girl Sandra, and his assistant, Mei are FABULOUS! They have followed my case from day one - helping with insurance hassles, comforting me when my incision opened up, caring for me, calling me long distance to check on me - they've all been great!
Dr. Luttrell has spent a lot of time on my follow up care, especially with the infection. He answers questions - nothing is a "stupid" question to him.
There is no structured after care program - but he provides support and is available for questions. But I would not have liked a structured program - I'm not that kind of person.
I was scared to death when my incision opened up - I wonder if I should have been on antibiotics longer in the hospital - but then this didn't happen till I was 4 weeks post op.... But they've been very supportive.
