Dr. Hornbostel is a very nice man with a great bed-side manner. The office staff are great to work with. The aftercare is very important to Dr. Hornbostel & medicaid coverss the B-12 shots given in his office on a monthly basis. I would surely reccommend him to anyone in need of the stomach by-pass. He literally saved my life, because at the same time of my surgery, the doc found an anurisum in my stomcah. Nothing was hidden from me before or after the surgery. I would highly rate Dr. Hornbostel...He has it all--the bedside manner & surgical competence.
I met Dr. Hornbostel at a seminar he held on May 6, 2003. The seminar was great and he gave you all the information you needed. He seemed very nice and my husband was more at ease about the possible surgery after the seminar. I have chose Dr. Hornbostel and he is in my network, next is to find out if he and the insurance company agree.
Even though he has only performed a little over 70 surgeries I felt he has had a great success rate.
During the seminar he covered each step of the procedure, each different surgery that can be performed and the aftercare for each surgery.
He did go over the risks of surgery and well, there are risks with every surgery.
He covered everything and really left no room for questions. He seems to be a great surgeon and I look forward to my first consultation and yes, my surgery, hopefully soon.
I really didn't get to talk with Dr. H much, but the little that I did talk with him he seemed to be a people person and know what the patients were going through.
I think that a doctor should have great bedside manner as well as great surgical competence, one without the other, just wouldn't make patients feel comfortable enough to allow him to perform surgery. I don't think Dr. H has a problem with either one and I look forward to becoming a patient of his.
I met Dr. Hornbostel on 3/19/03 when I had my consultation visit. I was very impressed with his knowledge and presentation of the information I needed. What I liked the most was that he did not push or pressure me into making a decision right then and there. I have done quite a lot of research about the LapBand procedure, but I still had some concerns. Dr. Hornbostel answered every question I had. I never felt rushed either. He has a genuine caring nature, as does his staff. They too are very nice and personable to talk to. I believe I made a great choice in choosing Dr. Hornbostel.
I have not yet met with Dr. Hornbostel--My appointment is scheduled for April 7. A woman in my gastric bypass support group at Fort Leonard Wood is having her surgery by Dr. Hornbostel next Friday (March 21), and she is a big fan of him. She told me he spent almost an hour with her, answering every single one of her questions. I will update as soon as I meet him.

I met with Dr. Hornbostel today, and I would like to record my impressions:
My first impression of the office and the staff is "professional." The office is very clean, well decorated, and homey looking--a fish tank in the middle of the waiting room, lots of oak trim, etc. The chairs had arms, but were wide enough for my bum plus extra, and there were also 4 or 5 loveseats, which could accomodate larger people. The bathroom is unisex, and is a rather large room. The staff called me by my first name, and were extremely pleasant. I was weighed and my height measured, then I was escorted to an exam room, where I was given two booklets to look over. Dr. Hornbostel came in after about 5 minutes, introduced himself, and we began. He used one of the booklets to explain the two surgeries he performs, and asked me if I was leaning one way or the other. He addressed the risks of leakage and blood clots, and explained the steps they take to prevent both. He talked about aftercare, but we did not get into details.
I asked him to compare the Lap RNY to the old intestinal bypass my Mother had back in the 70's, and he explained it very well, again using the brochure.
Dr. Hornbostel has a great "bedside manner," and made me feel extremely comfortable.
I first saw Dr. H at the info meeting on the 1st of April and I wasen't sure what to think but he soon made me so comfortable just listening to him explain everything and being frank about it was reassuring to me. He answered my questions and I also bought the book "weight loss surgery" and that too has been excellent for info and personal stories etc. I look forward to my first meeting in the office and hopefully get the ball rolling.
03-10-03 I recieved my Authorization today to go see Dr Hornbostal. I was so relieved to yet again get a letter to see a surgeon for surgery request. As this is my second time. But in a different state, and a different Dr. I called early today and scheduled the apt, for April 23rd. Im so ecited and nervous. I enjoyed talking to the staff there. And I cant wait to meet Dr Hornbostel. Im hoping in a few months to be on his surgery schedule. I have heard awsome things about him. And about his seminar he personally runs. I'll be attending the first of April's, and have high hopes.
Met Dr. Hornbostel for the first time on March 6th 2003. OH MY GOSH, was I impressed with him. He was very kind, understanding, and he knows his stuff!! He took the one on one time with me, to listen, and direct me. I just am so relieved that I chose the right one. Also his staff is GREAT!! I was just so happy to know that everyone was so nice, and wouldn't treat me like a burden. Thank you guys so much! You have no clue what that means to me. I have full confidence that Dr. H and his staff are the perfect choice for me for this journey!
I think that Dr. Hornbostel is very good, he answers most of your questions before you even ask them! He definitely knows what he's doing, and I know that he is very competent! He has good bedside manner. He tells you at the very first visit everything about pre-op, describes the operation and tells you what to expect afterwards. The only thing he doesn't do is tell you how much it hurts! ha! I rate him a 10 on a scale of 1-10! The only negative thing is that 1 visit where you get ALL the information is almost too much to absorb, so don't hesitate to call his office and talk to his nurse and ask questions.
I had a lot more pain after surgery than I anticipated, having talked to people who had open RNY and people who had Lap gall-bladder surgery, and when I "FINALLY" called to ask if there was something wrong or if I was just a weenie about pain, his nurse explained things to me and didn't make me feel like a weenie or feel stupid for not knowing. I really appreciated that.
I also saw Dr. Hornbostel in the community, and he didn't act like he didn't know me, he asked me how I was feeling, and that made me feel good, too.
2/19/03 Dr. Hornbostel should be commended for his concern for people who truly need his help and expertise. If you read this, Dr. H...THANK YOU for giving me back my life!
Dr Hornbostel is a very upfront, quick paced, and caring man. He is very knowledgeable, and good at what he does. At first my parents were concerned about the number of surgeries he had done, (not the most)but by surgery time we all decided that I couldn't have picked a better surgeon. In the hospital, his visits were very short. The only thing negative that I have experienced was that on my first visit with him, he gave me a after surgery nutrition booklet. When I was getting ready to go home from the hospital, I had some questions about it, and he gave me an entirely different diet to follow. He wasnt clear about the fact that I did not have to drink one ounce every 15 minutes, but I could drink normally, just sipping throughout the day. He also told me that the only place that carried my pain medicine was at the Wal-Mart in Sedalia. A family member went to WM with my prescriptions and they told him that they did not carry that medicine. He had to go back to the hospital to get the script filled. They told me that the hospital did not have the medicine. Beats me. They were just a little off in some places. But hey, if thats all that went wrong, thank goodness. I am overall very impressed, with Dr. Hornbostel and his staff.
