When I first met Dr. Hornbostel I went to his December 2002 seminar in Sedalia. I was impressed. He was very sincere, informative, kind, patient, and genuinely concerned with overweight people in general. His understanding of what we live is amazing. He answered all questions I had. He is careful not to try to influence your decision either way. I have had my consult with Dr. Hornbostel and feel even more confident, that I have found the Dr. for me. He is very explicit about the risks of my type of surgery (adjustable band) and the expectations of weight loss that I would achive. I would rate him a solid 10! Most of the Staff have been great. I have met one nurse that made me feel she some how does not approve of this surgery but that is only one staff member in many. Kim who deal with the insurance portion is a very sweet and patient person. She seems to understand our anxious souls. In spite of the one staff member I rate his staff a 10....
He seems to really care about his patients. I had no pain after surgery. I did have a lot of swelling and had no problem seeing him immediatly the morning I called the office about it. I had no problem with his office staff.
After the surgery my opinion did not change about him. He went over the risks of the surgery durning the consult. The only complaint I have is that he was not on call the day after my surgery. I told the doc (don't know his name) that was on call for him that I was having problems keeping anything down and he seemed very unconcerned. I had the surgery on Friday, went home on Saturday and was back in the hospital on Monday with dehydration and my stoma had swollen shut. I spent a day and half in the hospital again. This did not change my opinion about his surgical skills or bedside manner. I think he did a great job and would recommed him to anyone who asked.
On first impression I like Dr. hornbostel.
He was professional and made me feel at ease.
there was understanding in his tone not judgement. He seemed concerned for my current health and was confident that he could help me.
His office staff has always been informative and pleasant.
What did I like least about him??? Well the only thing I could say is that he seemed hurried.
He explained briefly all after care to address all my concerns.
Risks of surgery were addressed.
Overall I was very pleased with my consult for surgery.
I would rather have a competent surgeon with the bedside manner of a pit vipor than have an incompetent surgeon. But I trust my first impression of the DR and I believe him to be very competent and we will see about his bedside manner won't we.
My consultation was on December 30, 2002. The office was extremely helpful in helping me find my way to Sedalia from Kansas City. The office staff is unbelievably friendly and helpful. My consultation was excellent. Dr. Hornbostle helped me get a full understanding of both the LAP-BAND and RNY procedures as I was still unsure what the right procedure for me is. I know now that RNY is the way I should go. The doctor spent at least 45 minutes with me and made sure he answered all of my questions and that I felt well informed and comfortable with my decision. I liked him a lot and feel great confidence in him and his office staff.
I met Dr. Hornbostle at the seminar he holds on the first Tuesday of each month at Bothwell Hospital in Sedalia. I was very impressed with his knowlege of the procedure and how easy it was for him to quickly answer any of our numerous questions. To me, he appeared to be a truly compassionate Dr. who genuinely has his patients best interest at heart. My initial consultation with Dr. Hornbostle will be on September 30,2002!!
9/30/02: Had my first consultation with Dr. Hornbostel today. I still feel confident that he is a very qualified surgeon, and ALOT of my concerns about complications are now laid to rest, due to him explaining everything in great detail. I felt very comfortable talking openly to him about my medical history. His office staff seemed very polite and helpful. At this point I would rate him a 10.

Being post-op, I must say, I feel that Dr. Hornbostel is an excellent surgeon, that really cares about his patients. When I came home from the hospital, he gave me his home phone # in case I needed something and could not get in touch with him anyplace else. And he did personally call me to check on how I was doing. That really meant alot to me during my recovery time.
I first met Dr. Hornbostel last night at the information meeting he had in Sedalia. My first impression was that he is a very professional man somewhat egotistical but what doctor isn't. He acts and talks like he really understands what obesity is all about. He explained all about the surgeries he performs and answered all the questions that were asked very in depth. I was very impressed. After Dr. Hornbostel finished his presentation his support group had a meeting. It also was very informative and helpful. I feel better and more confident about the whole process after last night. I would recommend that anyone thinking about having Dr. Hornbostel do their surgery attend one of these meetings.
My first impression was great. He was very knowledgable & seemed to care very much about helping the obese population. My impression is still the same after four long months waiting for my surgery. Although I never get to speak with my surgeon personally over the phone, his office staff is always willing to help me with any problem or question, sometimes within a week, since they are so busy. My surgeon tells you all the good & bad about his procedures (laproscopic gastric bypass & laproscopic lap band), leaving no unanswered questions, including addressing all the risks. I would rate him very well, and would recommend his services to anyone. His surgical competence is very up to date, and he has a very caring bedside manner.
9-30-02 Went and met with the Surgeon for the first time. My first impression was that he was a very caring man. I felt that way about him during the hole time I had a chance to talk to him. His office staff was friendly, but I didn't really talk much to them. He was very willing to answer any question your have about anything that goes along about the surgery. At this point I give him a 10.
12-21-02 I have to say he is wonderful. Last week after I had surgery and came home I was having a fever and migranes. He personally called me at home and told me what to do. I think that is some really wonderful bedside manor.
I met with Dr. Hornbostel in August 2002. I had known him from being a past student of his in 1988. He is a very warm, understanding, and compassionate person. His office staff have been mostly helpful but I think are getting as frustrated as I am that the hospital and my Humana insurance cannot agree to a contract for my surgery cost.
I like that Dr. Hornbostel has an informational meeting prior to ever going to an appointment that is free of charge. It is nice that he has the support group and answers all the questions. He seems pretty laid back but yet professional.
The patients that have already had the surgery seem to really appreciate the work he does and are equally as excited to talk about their success.
I think that he does a very good job of explaining the surgery and the risks. As we all know, with any surgery, even childbirth or driving a car, there are risks. Each individual has to decide what is best for them and their body.
I rate him a 9 since I have not yet had the surgery.
I think that surgical competence far outweighs bedside manner, but I think he has both. What a win/win situation for his patients. I am so anxious to get the surgery over with and then can evaluate the service he provides in the hospital as well.
