I orginally asked for Dr. Kane Sr. since I had seen him about WLS about 10 years ago. After I was approved & went to make an appointment, I was told Dr. Kane Sr. would take awhile to get an appointment with.
I now have an appointment with Dr. Rantis on 3.31.03. I think they all work as a team anyway...so I'm fine with this.

Dr. Rantis was very straight forward in our surgical consultation. I had actually first heard of him through a friend of mine who's sister had Dr. Rantis as a surgeon and she was very impressed with him. Then, when I went to the seminar at Alexian Brothers, Dr. Rantis was the surgeon chosen to speak that day, so I had some experience with his demeanor prior to my appointment. My husband and I both felt very comfortable with him and more at ease after meeting with him. He is very confident, intelligent and honest. Dr. Rantis explained all of the risks involved with the surgery, the importance of aftercare and allowed me the opportunity to ask any questions my husband and I had.

I think the best way that I can descibe Dr. Rantis is to say that he was my life saver. M first impression of him was actually one of arrogance. Not uncommon among doctors. However, after getting to know him a little better, I was extremely comfortable with him. He has an excellent bedside manner and I think he truly cares about his patients. He is very strong on aftercare and having bloodwork kept up to date. These things are to your advantage. Before surgery, Dr. Rantis took the time to go over all aspects of this surgery. Not to be taken lightly. He went into great details about the surgery itself and the risks involved. He also went on to explain what I could expect after surgery. ie: going home with a drain, giving myself injections of a drug used to thin blood so I wouldn't get blood clots, etc. He listened to my questions and gave thorough answers. I would rate him a 9 overall....after all No one is a perfect 10.

Dr. Rantis is an excellent surgeon and the staff is friendly and helpful. They are very Personable, willing to take the time to be sure you are prepared for this step.
The program is definately geared toward the whole person with dietary meetings and pre and post-op support groups

UPDATE: GOING WITH DR. RANTIS 1/10/2001
I have switched surgeons. I will be going with DR. RANTIS and the Weight for Life program. I have heard all sorts of fabulous things about him and his office is really cool!!! My appointment is a week from today - 1/17/2001. I can hardly wait!!

UPDATE: 1/17/2001
I got bad news :-( yesterday that I had to reschedule my consultation appointment cuz the doctor was cancelling all his afternoon appointments for today. BOO HOO!!! So, I am now scheduled for Wed 1/24. Just a week's delay, but it feels like forever.

UPDATE 1/25/2001
I had my appointment with Dr. Kane's office on Wed. It went very well :-) I am, of course, a "good candidate" for RNY. I met not with Dr. Kane but with Dr. Rantis.
Dr. Rantis was very nice, took lots of time to explain the procedure to my husband, who accompanied me to the office. Dr. Rantis also did an excellent job of explaining the risks of surgery so that if I wasn't completely 1000% sure that I wanted to do this that I had an out. I appreciated that. He had a very caring nature. I give Dr. Rantis a 9 on a 0-10 scale!!

UPDATE: 5/6/2001
I just had to say how fabulous DR RANTIS is. He has a wonderful, caring, heartfelt bedside manor. He is thorough. He is kind. He is patient. He is so very available whenever you need him. He saw me EVERY SINGLE DAY I was in the hospital, even on Easter! Some days I saw him twice. He is so incredibly dedicated. When I needed additional pain medication after surgery he didn't bat an eyelash & ordered it for me. Once I got home and I thought I had an infection at my surgical site he told me to come on in the office - even though it would be after his office hours were done at the EGV office. My scar looks fabulous - it is not thick like some I have seen. He must have a very steady hand. I cannot believe sometime how fortunate I am to have such a fantastic doctor. Dr Rantis, if you read this -- THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART!!

UPDATE: 3/5/2003

Dr Rantis preformed panni surgery on me 2/19/03. He did a fantastic job and reminded me why I love him so dearly! I really do recommend him to anyone looking to have WLS in the Chicagoland area. He is the BEST!!!

I was originally scheduled to have an open procedure with Dr. Kane Sr., but Dr. Kane cancelled approx. 1 week before the surgery was scheduled to take place and Dr. Rantis stepped in.

I met with Dr. Rantis the Friday before my surgery date. Dr. Rantis thought that he might be able to do a lapriscopic procedure but said that he wouldn't know for sure until the procedure was started and he got a better chance to assess the situation. Turns our that he was able to do the lapriscopic procedure and I couldn't be happier. Dr. Rantis said that everything went fine and that there were no complications.

Overall I'd have to give Dr. Rantis a 10 out of 10. He was very ernest and forthcoming. He was easy to talk to and most important for me, he was able to perform the lapriscopic procedure.

I have to say that i am very happy with Dr. Rantis. He has been great from the beginig and is still great. I am not 5 months out and will going to my 4th visit after surgery and i am looking forward to seeing my surgeon and showing him what a great job he has done with me. When ever i have had a problem i call and get answers. He has a great bed side manner and a great sense of humor. I would reccomend him to anyone.

My appointment with Dr. Rantis went very well.He was easy to talk to. He did not rush me through the appointment. He talked in length about the surgery and answered all my questions. He told me not to worry about anything he would take good care of me.I was told I could call the office any time with questions and they would get back to me asap.

I have only met with Dr. Rantis once and that was for about 30 to 40 minutes during the surgical consultation. He explained the procedure thoroughly and took time to answer my questions. He explained the after care but most of that information came from the seminar I attended. I haven't had much contact with the office staff, but the few times I've called they have returned my calls in a very timely fashion and they've always been able to answer my questions.

My only complaint is the time frame it has taken since Weight for Life received my paperwork on 7/29/02 until my surgery date on 2/07/03. Although it has taken many months, all of the people I've dealt with have been very helpful.

I will make my final judgement about Dr. Rantis after surgery and my release from the hospital. I do feel very confident though that I will be in good hands.
