Loved him. I did a lot of research on my own so he only covered the stuff he had to cover as well as answer the few questions I had. He was very approachable and friendly and put me at ease. My interactions with him were so positive that I'm more excited than before. His office staff is pretty good as well. They're very friendly and helpful.
I had my surgery done back in Elk Grove Village, IL. by Dr. Rantis. He was wonderful right from the start!! Extremely informative, very witty!! His office staff was great. He had two offices, I went to both, always got in fast, and staff very friendly. They have a very supportive aftercare program that you can stay with for lif, but unfortunantly I moved soon after and can't seem to find that here!
I heard Dr.Rantis speak at the New Self Bariatric Seminar in June. The seminar was rather lengthy, approx 3 hours long, however Dr.Rantis held my attention as well as my skeptical parents who accompanied me. What impressed me is that it was not a "sell job" but rather he spoke about the risks of bariatric surgery, stressed after care and lifelong changes in eating/excersise. I had initially called New Self in early June and spoke w/Bessie, who I also met at the seminar. She has been quite helpful with assisting me in any questions that I've had and given me tips on how to move the process along i.e. making appointments right away to ensure a sooner surgery date.
Aftercare and behavior support groups are a must and organized thru Alexian Bros.Medical Center in Elk Grove Village.
Dr. Rantis seemed to be very arrogant & short with time as most doctors are.
It really wasnt until my last visit with him that I really felt he truly had my best interest at heart.
I left his office feeling very positive.
The office staff is very friendly and seems
willing to do whatever it takes to make things happen for you.
Dr. Rantis definately goes over the risks so much I almost changed my mind.
But after weighing the options
(no pun intended) What else did I have to lose?
I think aftercare is more enphasized at the seminars than at the doctors office.
My original surgery date was 12-23-04 but it was rescheduled because I became ill.
Dr. Rantis did call me at home to find out how I was doing but I felt as if he was very agitated that the surgery was rescheduled.
It is my hope that surgery will go well without complications. I do not want to rate him yet because I have not had the surgery. It is important to have surgical competence and a good bedside manner but if I had to choose one I would go for the surgical competence. Lets hope he displays both.
Dr. Rantis is the best, I was very nervous when I first met him but within minutes I felt very comfortable and at ease. He was very easy to talk to, explained everything, risks, aftercare, life long visits, even drew pictures, gives you all the time you need. Listens, very concerned for your well being, warm, patient and understanding. Wonderful, kind, compassionate caring bedside manor. Very competent and truly cares about you. Always returned my calls promptly. When my husband couldn't accompany me to my visits he always told me if he had any questions he could call and he'd be happy to answer them. Dr. Rantis has preformed 5 more procedures on me since my RNY (none related to WLS) and his care has been awesome. His steady hands have left virtually no scars. After my last hospitalization he showed me he was also concerned about my mental well being as well as my physical. THANK YOU DR. RANTIS FOR BEING THERE FOR ME. YOU'VE SAVED MY LIFE TWICE.
I was happy with him. He and Dr. Verseman did my surgery. I found that Dr. Verseman was better for me. He was there almost everyday of my 32 day stay. I love the office staff they are all very nice and do remember me everytime I go in to see the doctor. There was really nothing I did not like about the Dr.'s and the office personal. All the doctors are wonderful in their own way.All the doctors and nurses are there for you when you need them for aftercare.Yes, I do belive all the doctors have their own aftercare program for their patients and they give the one that fits the patient. They went over it very well they want to make sure you have the full understanding of what you are about to do. It took Dr. Rantis a month after I saw him to let me have the surgery. I would say he cares very much for his patients and wants to do what is right for them.Surgical competence is better for him.
Dr. Rantis was friendly yet to the point. He did a thorough history and exam on my first visit. He definitely knows what he is doing and can explain things very well. He is attentive and gets back to you quickly when called.
I saw him at the New Self Bariatrics initial seminar and then at this appointment. So far my impression of him has remained positive.
The office staff is very nice but there needs to be more education done in the office by a nurse. The doctor does a lot of the education but the education needs to be more detailed and a nurse in his practice could do this.
Pre-op care: need to see dietician, psychologist, sleep apnea doctor, have blood work, EKG, ultrasound, and upper GI. They also have you boost your immune system the week before surgery by drinking specially formulated beverages. I like this proactive, more holistic approach to helping prevent infections.
What do I like most about him-he explains things well and follows up with you in a timely fashion.
What do I like least about him-he's not warm & fuzzy-more professional/business like. But he knows his stuff and he is NOT rude or demeaning like some physicians! And he's a doctor you can work and converse with.
For future patients-if you like a warm fuzzy doctor, he may not be it. He is the doctor in this practice with the most experience with Lap Band surgery and though he may be more to the point-he cares and answers your questions well.
Aftercare-they require attendance at their support groups and stress the need to call them with any questions or problems before & especially after surgery. They are concerned about you and do not want you to wait to call or go to ER if experiencing problems after surgery. They haven't really gone through when the post-op appointments are yet. I think they need to spell out their aftercare program more in written form and in the initial visit education.
The risks of surgery were thoroughly addressed in the initial marketing seminar that he did. He also thoroughly went through them during the office visit. You also sign a Lap-Band consent with the risks written out.
Overall, Dr. Rantis is an excellent doctor with an excellent reputation and good Lap-Band experience. I'm looking forward to my surgery with him.
I believe, as a RN, that having surgical competence and a decent bedside manner is best. Obviously, you want someone with a lot of experience that does the procedure you wish very frequently. You want them to have a low complication rate and the hospital you'll be at, to have low infection rates. In regards to your hospital, you want decent nurse to patient ratios and you want to make sure the unit you'll be taken to after surgery has nurses that are trained in post-op bariatrics and the needs of bariatric patients. Also, make sure the hospital isn't new at doing bariatric surgery-you want an operating room team that knows what they are doing. As for bedside manner, some doctors have a hard time with this but if they are rude, demeaning, and/or unattentive and cannot or will not answer your questions to your satisfaction-go elsewhere. Dr. Rantis has a decent bedside manner and good surgical skill reputation.
***5 days until surgery and I really must let everyone how impressed I've been with Dr. Rantis. When I call with questions, he's called me back the same day after his office hours and is very thorough with his answers and makes sure you understand what he's said. Some doctors would just call the next day or something and rush through the phone call-Dr. Rantis is definitely not like those doctors. You can tell he cares and emphasizes good communication with his patients.
****5 days post-op....Dr. Rantis did a great job with surgery. I have 6 little incisions total all with stitches. No complications. Saw his nurse after surgery who was very pleasant and informative. Dr. Rantis is a very competent, conservative, cautious surgeon. You can't go wrong with him!
Dr. Rantis is great. I am shy with new people and Dr.Rantis made me feel very comfortable. I have never had a problem getting an appointment or seeing him; he always returns my calls. 6 months after surgery I experienced abdominal pain and he got on it right away to discover I needed to have my gallbladder out. He didn't make me wait or make me jump through hoops. He took care of me right away. I have left Illinois and moved to North Carolina. But I will fly back once a year to see Dr. Rantis.
