He was personable and informative, however, you only see him one time prior to surgery so be prepared with your questions. His office staff was and is friendly and helpful. His PA is really sweet and knowledgeable.rnTheir group really emphasizes after care, they give you very good written info., classes that are helpful and really make sure to follow you up with labs.rnThe risks of surgery were totally explained.rnI would rate Dr. Coates and his staff at an overall 10 of 10. Memorial hospital in Modesto was also excellent. The care and kindness of the staff was impressive.rnAs far as the question of bedside manner vs. surgical competence- I think I would like both, but obviously if I had to choose- of course it would be competence.

At the seminar Dr. Coates came off as very funny, knowledgeable and laid back. It wasn't until almost 11 months later and the day before my surgery that I got to see him one on one. But when I did he was just as nice and relaxed as he appeared in the seminar. The office staff have always been more than helpful, warm and friendly. The only negative I'd have to say aboat Coates is that he has so many patients, is in such high demand (does SO many surgeries) that I've heard so many stories about patients not meeting him until a week post-op. I guess I got lucky to see him at my pre-op, the morning of, and the day after! I've heard he has a great record with minimal complications. His bedside manner is a little off when he interjects his wierd sense of humor and your left wondering if he was serious or joking.

I haven't met him yet. But I have met his partner Dr Coirin. rnThe staff that I have talked to are nice and well informed.rnBoth Dr's have just recieved thier COE certification.rnAt the siminar everything was explained in detail.rnI think I will be happy with Dr Coates and his staff.rnI know both surgeons are very busy and don't always get time to see their patients one on one until the day of surgery. I don't care for that idea but I do understand it.rn08/03/2008rnWell, I really liked my surgeon. Everything went very well.

So far, so good. I had a blip in the insurance deal. I am waiting on his staff to correct everything and get me back in. Surgery was on June 26th. I am just sitting here waiting to get it rescheduled. I meet the Doc, he seems to be great, and staff is great and so pleasant.

Dr. Coates was great as was his office staff through the entire process. I would definitely recommend him to everyone. He has done thousands of procedures and that's all I care about. My surgery went very smooth and my recovery time was about a week.

I have been a patient of Dr. Coates for nine monthes, and I have lost 100 lbs. I think he is a wonderful surgeon, and his staff are awesome, they are all very heploful with anything I needed prior to surgery and after as well. Y ou can always call and be met by a friendly voice.Anybody in the Modesto area thinking about Bariatric surgery, should give them call, it will be the start to your new life. He was very attentative in the hospital, and Dianne is very knowledgable if I ever have questions.

I didn't even SEE Dr. Coates at any point of my surgery or my stay in the hospital. I think that since he had my life in his hands that maybe he could have stopped by. Oh well, I'll take surgical compentence over bedside manner any day. Other than that, when I met him for 10 minutes at my first Pre-Op appt, he seemed nice enough. Good luck!

Dr. Coates seemed like a great surgeon at the seminar, fairly intelligent, but he wasn't the same in the hospital. I didn't get to meet him before my operation. I actually had to wait until my 4th day in the hospital before he could make time for me. Apparently, he nicked something while operating and it caused quite a bit of bleeding that lasted several days. It got so bad that I almost had to have a blood transfusion. I appreciate what the doc did for me and does for others, and everybody makes mistakes, and I lived...thanks to the hospital staff. I was ready to check out and go home and had to wait for him to come to my room before I could leave. He spent about 2-3 minutes with me, mostly looking at my bruises, and then \"poof\" he was gone. So far this hasn't been a very good experience for me at all.
