Dr. Gagner was very warm and empathetic. He treated me with respect and compassion. He answered my questions and spoke "with me" rather than "to me". His office staff was wonderful and his patients were great too! EVERYONE made me feel genuinely welcome. I could not have had a better experience. I can't wait to get my date!!~
First impression was compassion. He was warm and caring and said to me "I am listening" then gave me the floor. He was knowledgible and confident, never arrogant or curt. He shared information with me and acknowledged my work and research into this surgery. I absolutely felt like this was the surgeon I had been searching for.
His Assistant Allison - One word. Amazing. She is unbelievably helpful and WILLING to answer phone calls and deal with my questions and concerns. She's just the best. Pre-op and post-op.
The surgery went perfectly. Dr. G was excellent through out and every time I've seen him since. His communication with my family post-surgery was a little lacking but I've discovered that he just has his own 'style' of talking to you. Quiet and very low key with almost no emotional tones, which can be confusing until you get to know him a bit more.
I'm having issues with his front office staff since the surgery. There is a lot of mis-communication or no communication at all between them. It's very frustrating and I would be prepared for it if you are considering using this surgeon.
His name is actually Michel Gagner, MD
Initial impression was of his sincere interest in me as a potential patient. Previously I had ben seen by bariatric surgeons that wanted to Lap- Band or RNY me, acted like they had never heard of D/S and at just under 300 lbs seemed dismissive (I do this all the time attitude) or just not personable.I have(had) several co-morbidities and a huge drug list-- Dr. Gagner listened to it all with patience.I was initially dealing with staff from Mt. Sinai, NYC-- his RN and insurance person were very difficult to recieve return calls or emails.Just prior to my surg he moved downtown to head up the min. invase WLS program at NYU_Presbyterian/Cornell Univerity-- some last min confusin but overall handled well. I had to have 2 surgeries, a year apart, due to need for spenectomy for one of my co-morbidities. I did lose some weight with just the antrectomy/splenectomy surg. My D/S surg 10/04 basically went without any complications
I have not returned to NY for aftercare so can not speak to these aspects of their program. I have both an internist as well as GI specialist at Univ of Virginia, have seen their nutritionist only once after some of my A,D levels were too low. Otherwise all labs are followed here.
I am a nurse practitioner and was aware of the varos risks with each of the surgical options. Dr. to open surg. Gagner rarely has to convert open surgery. I saw him every day pot-op, as well as his team of residents, fellows and the anesthesia department. I can not recommend Dr. Gagner and the Cornell program highly enough.
My first impression was of quiet competence. He reviewed all of the procedures he performed, asked for my preference, and told me that the one I chose was also his recommendation. I liked that he has nutritionists on-staff and that he requires nutritional follow-up for aftercare. I can't rate anything else right now, since I'm preop.
The more I speak with hime, the more impressed I am. He is very knowledgable and supportive and cares about his patients.
Friendly and helpful
He is not warm and fuzzy at first, but openly discussed the different types of surgery and the potential complications.
In the hospital he was incredibly supportive, and his staff was very helpful as well.
Has follow up care program.
His surgical competence is well known and I have many other WLS post ops refer to him as "the master". He does not have much of sense of humor, but really cares about his patients. While he may not be warm and fuzzy initially, I had complete confidence in his hands and really felt he cared.
He was very positive from the beginning. He had to undo the first VBG done by another surgeon - I had been vomiting for over 2 and a half years. I had interviewed 3 other surgeons and he was the most realistic and honest about what needed to be done. I had other problems that had to be dealt with as well. His staff was helpful and patient. The negative was he had no aftercare - but since this was my second surgery I already knew the routine and knew what to do with my diet.
He has since extended his skills in bariatric surgery and has has extended his services. I would definitely recommend him to others.
