my first impression of dr caruana was that he was a very nice man but very busy with a lot of patients to see we only spent a few minutes talking but he seems very understanding some of his office staff can use some people skills though some are nasty and impatient i think but as far as dr caruana and mark [his assistant] i would rate them and 8 on a scale of 10
Dr. Carauana and his staff are very welcoming. At the inital orentation it was a little nerve wreaking to hear him say that the national average of deaths occuring during surgery was about 1 in 200. During my first visit I was given an exam by the doctor and was told that I would be a good canidate for WLS.
Dr. Caruana is a very caring compassionate surgeon who is able to talk to you at your level and incorporates just the right amount of humor to make you feel very at ease. The longer you know him, the better you like him.
His office staff is A1. At my first appointment a patient of his, upon leaving, became seriously ill. The efforts of Dr. Caruana and his staff were unequal. After seeing this with my own eyes, I have nothing but the highest regard for efforts.
There is nothing I dislike about Dr. Caruana unless it would be how busy he is. Therefore it is necessary for him to have others in his office fill in for him at different times.
Dr. Caruana specializes in open RNY gastric bypass. After the years he had performed this surgery, he feels it is the best WLS available and being open he has a better view of what is going on inside you.
Aftercare is emphasized for the rest of your life with continued checkups, blood work, and most important Synergy, a Health & Fitness Program he and his associate advocates. Also provided are numerous peer group support that I found very helpful to address my many questions as pre op. I no doubt will find this group invaluable now that I'm post op.
I rate him A1 along all areas of expertise.
When he conducted his WLS seminar, he was up front with the statics of WLS, as well as his statics.
My first imperssion of Dr.Caruana was that he was a very nice man. I felt very confident in his capabilities. At the time of my surgery I was very scared. He came over to me before I went into the Operating room and really made me feel alot better. I felt that he really cared. I also loved his bedside manner! He was wonderful when he came to pull the drains out. He joked around and made me feel really comfortable. I am very very happy to have had him as my surgeon and would never trust anyone else. His office is also amazing! I love the atmosphere and the people that go there...and most of the people that work there are great! He has a gym in his office and a cafe for patients. I work out there 5 days a week :-)
Mark the PA was really nice and so is Dr Caruana. Care in the hosp was good. Office staff is effecient but not very friendly. After care is really stressed a nd having a work out program when you are able to. Dr Caruana goes over all the risks of surgery in his information meeting. I thinks both surgical and bedside manner are important and Mark and Dr Caruana have both.
He was very thorough, professional and knowledgeable. My impressions have not changed. His staff are all very professional, knowledgable and very helpful. Any future patients should know they made a wonderful choice if they pick Dr. Caruana. He provides a 2 hr. seminar to begon with where he introduces his staff and give you all the info on the operation, the risks, and his statistics concerning death, infections, etc. His office has a small gyn attached where he provides exercise options and offers one on one help when needed. He offers a free one month membership after surgery to get you started on a new healthier life. We also met with a nutritionist before surgery who met with us for 1-2 hrs. to explain everything. The nutritionist also is available after surgery for one on one consults and she also offers nutrition meetings several times a month after surgery. Dr. Caruana has a very structured aftercare, taking care of all your needs. I would rate Dr. caruana an A++. The only complaint I had was no one "found" my 10 family members after surgery to let them know I was okay.
My first impression was that he was a caring, nonjudgemental person, interested in a person's well-being, and that impression has continued. His staff is very professional and helpful. They know you name and answer each and every question with interest and professionalism.
I was most impressed by the aftercare program with the physician's assistant, dietician and exercise program available for any and all questions and to guide you on your new path in life.
The aftercare program as well as risks before surgery were explained in detail and all my questions were answered in a way that I could understand.
I would rate him an excellent surgeon with very professional and caring follow up staff.
My only neutral feeling about the program is the nutrional aspect being crammed into a 1 1/2 hour session along with the exercise program. I feel that since it is a such a drastic change in eating habits it should have been more detailed and perhaps even its own session presurgery.
First of all this is my second experience with Dr. Caruana. My husband had the surgery a year ago and I have been through the the whole process with him. I like this MD very much. Even befor you try to apply for the surgery he makes you attend an informational meeting where he explains the whole surgical procedure and gives you all the pro's and cons, the side effects and what to expect and even the morbitity stats. He pulls no punches and gives it straight to you during that first class and tells you if you have any doubts this is not the surgery for you. He makes you work for the surgery, you have to attend nutrition and exercize classes and you have to hand in a complete profile of your dieting and health history. His office staff is very helpfull and friendly, they also are very much like Dr. Caruana no punches pulled. They enforce the idea that this is a serious procedure and it should be taken as such, and only want to deal with those patients that take it that way. After care is enforced he stresses exercize, nutrition, and follow ups for lab work, and general wellness. I trust him completely doing my surgery....I trusted him with my husband thats good enough for me.
I have known Dr. Caruana for 8 years since he repaired a perforated bowel that I got as a result of a sigmoidoscopy. He and his staff are great to deal with, but you must have "all your ducks in a row" with respect to their pre-office visit requirements or you will be resccheduled. They outline it very clearly though, so it is easy to follow.
Aftercare is important to Dr. Caruana as far as I can tell. He encourages you to work out and make it a regular habit. He owns a gym that is right in his office and most of the people there are bariatric patient's.
Risks of surgery are addressed at a preop meeting in detail.
Overall, he is my hero!
