FIRST IMPRESSION WAS THAT HE IS VRY ORGANIZED, FAST, QUICK. IT DIDN'T. OFFICE STAFF WELL NOT TO BAD THEY DONT WONT TO HEAR YOU UNTIL YOUR SUR DATE IS SCHEDULED.
BEST IN THIS AREA. EXTREMELY NOT SURE YET I BELIEVE SO. NOT A HOLE LOT BECAUSE I DID MY OWN RESEARCH. HIM AND HIS TEAM HAVE BEEN FORMING THIS SUR FOR OVER 5 YEARS. NOT SURE YET
I think Dr. Caruana is a very nice man. He seems very knowledgable and compassionate to overweight people. The office is very busy and can be somewhat brash but I realize that they have to do their job inorder to let the doctor do his. The doctor's assts. were wonderful. They were also very smart and caring. I think that anyone in the WNY area should consider Dr. Caruana if they are considering WLS. He has done over a thousand of them and freely admitts that he has had 4 deaths. He does explain the procedure and all the effects of the surgery. He also has a wonderful post op program and has a gym right in his office. Overall, I found my journey so far one to be pretty much problem free. Teh staff took care of everything--the insurance forms, hospital info etc. It was nice not to have to worry about any of it. They even let me do my pre-op testing closer to my home town since I live two hours away. See....I traveled 2 hours....cause I knew and FELT he was worth it!
Dr Caruana, first impression, he is knowledgeable and efficient; sometimes I felt a little rushed in his office because of the scheduling of appointments, it was a bit annoying but his staff is excellent and helps smooth the edges; he admitted that he has gotten better doing the surgeries & he has adjusted his techniques; he spoke about the 5 patients, out of 430, as of 2/03, that died after the surgery & about the risks involved; spent time answering all questions; his staff listens and explains everything. His office is set-up with a large workout facility. He has before & after surgery programs, works closely with the support groups; Overall, I believe he is an excellent surgeon. I will provide more info post-op. He has a very detailed structure aftercare program that you must follow. It does help you thru the process. I would rate him way above average.
Hi
Just a short note about Dr Joe...he was a very busy and caring man has every issue taking care of and is open to any questions. He also has a very informed and capable staff. They are very dogmatic about how things are to be done which cuts down on the confusion.
I truly think they could only get better like with cheese aged to perfection!!
He also has provided a GYM connected to his office for his patients or even if your not but they are geared to obese patients for sure...
I would say his surgical competence and bedside matter are both very good!!
He has a Physician Assistant whom I adore her name is Audrey. Very kind and loving and exhorts you all the way...
My first impression of Dr. Caruana is that he is a very busy man and he runs a very structured office. That had me worried at first but let me tell you how wonderful everything went. From getting all the paperwork and approval from my insurance company to getting my disability paperwork completed and turned in so I didnt have financial issues while I was on disability. They are on top of everything, all his staff included. Pain issues where dealt with extremely well in and out of the hosp. So far 3 weeks post op Ive had no complications and will be returning to work in less than 2 weeks. Dr. Caruanna truly cares about our health and has an amazing aftercare program and his own fitness center for his patients. If I had lived closer to the gym I would have become more involved in his program. He and his staff make sure you understand the risks and knowing that he has preformed over 1,000 surgery's really keeps you fearless. I cant say enough about this office, and this surgeon. I would highly recommend Dr. Caruana to anyone with a wieght problem who is considering gastric bypass surgery. Christina Sterner
I was surprised. HE is warm, caring and genuinely concerened. He really understood and I never thought the a born thin person would ever understand. I love this man he helped me to change my life and he truely cared. He has been consistent. His medical office staff is fabulous. His business staff are a different matter. Not my favorite people. You will love this man and especially Mark who is a major hunk and hottie. They have an exercise program for patients that is geered towards the problem of overweight people. They also deal with nutrition. They also send people out for a psychiatric evaluation. BUT They really don't deal with the psycology of the overeater. I guess though he really can't/ It should really be addressed. They also have a support group but it is so large that they really can't deal with much. It is good for the person that knows nothing and is looking for beginning info. Yes they deal with risks and are very up front about it. Aftercare is dealt with. Overall I loved him would give him a 9/10. Bedside manor is great with him and fabulous with Mark who is bit of a flirt. Competence and bedside manner is great. My only 2 complaints would be that he is so busy he doesn't spend much time with pts. and the staff is rather nasty about money.
I went to Dr. Caruana because he's pretty much the "only game in town". There is only one other doctor performing WLS in Buffalo, and I had seen him and disliked him immensely. Besides, I had heard great things about Dr. Caruana. I found his initial group meeting VERY helpful, almost every question I had was answered. His staff was very organized, paperwork was clear and concise, everyone understood exactly what the next step was. My surgery was performed on Jan. 22, 2004, and went well. However, I experienced horrific abdominal pain about 3 days after being discharged, and ended up back in the hospital for another 2 nights, due to an ileus. When Dr. Caruana came to see me, I had to remind him who I was and why I was there. I believe taking care of so many patients is just overwhelming, there's no way he can keep track of all of us. His staff, especially PA Mark, were enormously helpful, courteous, and competent at their jobs. Overall, I have to say I'm very satisfied.
Dr. Caruana was a very behind the scenes kind of doctor. I had 100% confidence in his abilities, however, his bedside manner was very limited. He was interested in getting patients in and out, as long as they were as healthy as he could get them. I was very taken back by him though.
The assisting doctor, Mark Cabe, was absolutely wonderful and made up for the bedside manner. He took the extra time to learn about any problems and discussed them with Dr. Caruana to come up with the best solution. He is gorgeous too!
Audrey, the PA was absolutely wonderful! She took time to contact me from her home to make sure I was doing ok. She came to the hospital and spoke to me about my problems. She actually made me feel as if I was the only patient she had to deal with.
Dr. Caruana's student P.A. was wonderful too. I saw him each day in the hospital. Even though he couldn't do much for me without a Dr.'s authorization, he was intrigal in making me feel welcomed and on the right path.
Overall, For the type of care I prefer, this was an ideal practice for me. I would recommend this practice to others although I did not care much for the doctor himself.
