My first impression of Dr. Weiss Was great and it has continued to be great through the whole process. The office staff at Bluegrass Bariatrics is awesome. It is like a family atmosphere and many of the nurses have had RNY themselves. They are serious about after support and after care you can always depend on them. They even have nurses who monitor their chat boards daily to make sure patients are ok. He was very open and honest about the risks. You know that you may die from a leak, blood clot or other difficulty. That is the only way to be. I would rate Dr, Weiss on a scale of 1 -10 as a 10. He is not only fantastic but he is darn cute to look at to. :-) I prefer surgical competence but I could honestly say Dr. Weiss has both and he cares about his patients. He would see me in the halls walking and ask me every time how things were going and if things were ok. Most Drs. from my experience don't have alot of time for you after your 8 am. visit. He always had time to talk. I would recommend anyone to him.
I attended Obesity Help's Lexington Conference and met Drs. G. Derek Weiss & John Oldham there, as I attended every lecture I could to get as much info I could to make an informed decision about weight loss surgery. We initially met in an informal question & answer session thatwas relaxed and unhurried. I immediately felt a strong sense of confidence in their professional competency, their thoroughness and care for the patient's successful outcome. I followed up with Bluegrass Bariatrics upon returning from the conference. I was a self-pay patient as my insurance company excludes bariatric surgery for any reason. My main concern was finding the best surgeons & hospital. They have a comprehensive pre-surgery process that includes extensive physical, psycological testing to evaluate the patient's risk & outcome for weight loss success. Once I was cleared for surgery, my next step was educational video about all risks of both LapBand & Gastric bipass surgeries. I had consultations with Internists that would see me after surgery as well as DR. Weiss. The exams included patient history, physical exams as well as any questions I might have. Both appointments were not rushed, and very thorough. My impressions of Dr Weiss were only confirmed again, as he explained his aggressive treatment of any possible complications. My surgery went so well, that the hospital staff was amazed I felt so good. I spent more time in the halls walking than I did in my room. I have not had any nausea, and my pain was so minimal, I only used liquid Tylenol twice after coming home post-op. I went back one week later for my first post op appointment weighing 191.5 pounds. There is a very structured after care program that includes dietician help, support groups, and complete follow up care for the first year. I was given the business card of Dr. Weiss with explicit instructions to call the office for ANY potential problems, and not to wait. Dr. Weiss saw me both in ICU following surgery, and in the Bariatric unit early morning and late afternoon. He took the time to examine my abdomen, listen to my chest, and ask how I was doing. I felt he could not been more thorough and conscienous with my care. I would not hesitate to recommend him to any of my family members or friends needing bariatric surgery. The staff at both Georgetown Hospital and Bluegrass Bariatrics have shown the same level of patient care that the surgeons have shown. I was really glad I went to Georgetown Hospital because of the individualized care I received. There were only four bariatric patients on the ward when I had my surgery. The halls were quiet (NOT like large, busy, noisy hospitals) and the care was excellent.
My first surgery was January 19, 2007. rnMy first impression of him was absolutely positive. Although he had flown in from Georgetown to Mayfield with Dr. Oldham, and he was between surgeries, he did not seem to rush me, was very informative and friendly. My impression has not changed from the first time I met him until my surgery. He continued to be cordial, professional, yet made me and my family feel he was available and accessible.......rnHis office staff in Mayfield are #1. They are so very warm and make you feel relaxed yet you know that they are constantly on top of getting your paperwork ready and getting you approved. rnThere was nothing I disliked about Dr. Weiss.rnThere isn't anything I can think of that I think a future patient should know about Dr. Weiss, other than I don't supposed there is a question about your procedure that he can't answer and he makes you feel confident that he can handle your surgery and after care completely.rnAftercare is stressed, as is the fact that lap band is a tool, not a \"cure\", and you have scheduled follow up phone calls as well as appointments to see you through.rnDr. Weiss addressed the risks of surgery by acknowledging that any surgery is potentially dangerous but that statistics are on our side.rnI personally do not think that rating Dr. Weiss 100% is over-rating him as my experience was totally successful and I have no complaints..rnSurgical competence and bedside manner are equally important to me. I would not go to someone who was not surgically competent but not all surgeons have the ability to talk and make you understand and not talk down to you. rnThank you.rn
I met with Dr. Weiss to schedule my surgery on 12/12/06. He very sensitivie and caring. He totally explained EVERYTHING to me, the pre-op, the operation, and what I need to do post-operatively. He gave plenty of time for me and my mom to ask questions. He explained everything that was going to happen and made me feel very at ease. I have no reservations about the surgery. rnrnI would rate him a 9.9 (hey, no one's perfect)
First meeting with Dr. Weiss was a joy. Very handsome young man and has a easy gait about himself. He is confident but certainly not arrognant. Make you feel comfortable with him and his abilities.rnrnThe staff at Mayfield, Ky is excellent. First you meet Petra, a very mysterious women. Very sincere in helping others and a great sense of humor. Miracle worker in getting things done and red tape cut. Then comes Jennifer, she might still be in school by her young looks but very professional but not stuffy. Warm person and cares about each person as a friend.rnrnThe staff were very careful to talk in sessions about the after life of the surgery and did not try to over or under emphisize any things from good or bad. Very through in details and knowing that you understand everything, not just what you wanted to hear.rnrnEveryone was very honest about this surgery and never put any pressure on the patients, always left a exit open on dicissions.rnrnHighly recommend this facility at Jackson Purchase Medical Center, Mayfield, Ky. to anyone looking into weight loss. I put myself into there hands and they certainly came through with flying colors.
My first impression of him was good, he seemed very knowledgeable. The day that I had my consultation, he was very attentive and took time to answer all of my questions. The day of the surgery, he seemed preoccupied but maybe that just is his mindset when he gets ready to go into surgery. Focused.....that's how I choose to look at it his demeanor that day.rnHis office staff have all been great except one person, the first person that you usually see, and she always seems either too busy or just not interested at all. Definetly not the person that they want greeting people.rnG-town has been great about educating me and other patients. No one can say that they didn't know the risks going in. He and his staff have done a great job developing a program that includes many different aspects, not just letting you walk in and have surgery. I have been very impressed with what I have seen so far.
I really liked Dr. Weiss the first time i met him. He seemed truly sensitive to my condition and was in no way rude or condescending.rnHis office staff are very professional and always ready to help.rnAfter care is a big thing to Dr Weiss. He stressed this web site as well as support group meetings.rnHis after care program is very structured. His staff gives you many hand outs on what to do next, how to eat , what to look out for.rnHe spoke at great length with me about the risks of Lap Band surgery as well as the life long comitment.rnI would rate his overall preformance a 9.rnThe only thing I think was lacking was he did not come to see me after surgery. Although he did talk to my husband, I would have liked to have seen him my self.rnI believe him to be a very competent surgeon and his bedside manner is good as well.
Dr. Weiss was my primary surgeon, and I'm especially impressed with him. He's compassionate, very professional, and extremely knowledgeable. Because he does only bariatric surgery, he knows what he is doing! He offers only laparoscopic, minimally-invasive procedures, and I'm especially impressed that he has never had to convert a laparoscopic procedure into an open procedure. He spent as much time as I needed explaining the different procedures and answering my questions. He and Dr. Oldham have an exceptional practice because they are exceptionally good doctors!
