Very professional, caring, and it didn't hurt, he is gorgous. Dr. Weiss and Dr. Oldham are very up to date on all aspects of the WLS. We are all treated like we are all one family, from the doctors, nurses, all of the office staff and the hospital here at Georgetown. I can't say enough about the care I received when I had my surgry. When I had a question after I got home, they were right to answer it. We have weekly support meetings and also monthly support meetings. We have the surgeons nurse calling to see how we are doing, asking if we have any problems or concerns and making sure we are following up with our appointments. They all work so hard to make life better for us, even if it is to lend an ear. Three of the nurses had the same surgery, so they know how we feel. Dr. Weiss and I talked about all my health problems and being 58, I trusted him completely. I will always be greatful to Dr. Weiss and Dr. Oldham, the Staff and Georgetown Hospital for everything they all did to make this surgery happen. I truly have nothing negitive to say about my experience, except I HATE the protein drinks, which won't stay down. BUT I keep trying.

Dr. Derek Weiss is real. He is genuinely interested in helping us - and he has the laporoscopic surgeon's skills to do it. Dr. Weiss is an extremely handsome man and all of us patients fight over him! (He's married.)

Dr. Weiss, prior to becoming interested in fighting obesity, attended the funeral of a patient who passed away. I'd never heard of a physician doing this before.

He does address the risks of surgery and endorses the aftercare program at Georgetown Community Hospital, which is why we patients succeed where other successful post-ops fail. Dr. Oldham, equally sensitive and handsome, is the other skilled surgeon.

There is no cover-up's in our support groups. We openly admit our problems, including potentially serious ones, in order to receive encouragement from others.

I believe that I received the best medical care in America.

Dr.Derek Weiss, who is in practice with Dr. John Oldham, Jr. made a very good first impression when I first attended one of their seminars in July of 2003. They were both very knowledgeable about the plight of the overweight patient, and were up to the minute on the non invasive surgical techniques.

The 3 nurses on their staff, and who run the program out of the Georgetown Community Hospital are all WLS patients. That was a HUGE plus for me also in making my choice to go with this group. The support is unbelievable. I NEVER have to wait more than 5 minutes for a return phone call with any question I have ever had.

I was educated on all aspects of the surgery and life before and after surgery. I went into the decision to have WLS knowing all the risks as well as benefits. No stone was left unturned.

I would rate Dr. Weiss and Dr. Oldham as 2 of the most competant doctors that I have ever had. I truly have trusted them with my life. They have saved it.

Dr. Weiss is a State of the Art surgeon. He is as caring as he is a qualified doctor. I chose the best. I trust him totally. I have not one negative thing to say concerning Dr. Weiss his assistant Dr. Oldham or the rest of his staff.

My surgeon is the greatest! I have nothing but great things to say about Dr. Weiss and the staff at Bluegrass Bariatrics. They have a wonderful follow-up program. They are prompt to answer any questions and quickly offer help in any way they can. I love them!

DR Weiss is a wonderful surgeon. When I first met with him he made me fill very comfortable and at ease. That has lasted always. The office staff calls and checks on me periodically and I had surgery over two months ago. They are wonderful and always there for you.
There wasnt anything that I didnt like.
I Would tell future patients that he is such a great Doctor and that he and his partner Dr. John Oldham are so trustworthy and you just feel safe and secure with them.

Every single thing was great aftercare, competence, bedside manner. I cant say enough great thing about him or his practice. Perfect!!

Absolutely wonderful first impression. Knowledgeable, experienced, confident, but caring. Not arrogant or rude in the slightest. Dr. Weiss was patient, friendly and very very nice.

He answered the hard questions--without batting an eye. No deaths, low complication rate (lower than national average) and he seems to genuinely want to make a difference in big folks' lives. He is thrilled at his patients' progress, and well-being, as evidenced by his quick recall of names and situations.

He stresses he wants you to be a lifelong patient, meaning that he'll follow your care thru surgery and beyond. At the seminar, his program director and nurse were there and here's another bonus: Both were bariatric patients themselves.
They've literally written a handbook on pre/post op info for the wls patient.

The program is organized. They gave us packets and info and email addresses and where to direct what questions to, etc. They definitely seem to view patients as people and not just a "customer" or another belly. They know your name and remember your life. That's a great feeling.

Especially after a lifetime of doctors who treat you like being fat is some sort of personal failing and a sign of being a horrible person. He realizes and stresses that like alcoholism, obesity is a disease.

They have a very structured and supportive aftercare program. Support groups, educational classes.

Overall, out of a 1-10 10 being the highest, he gets a 10.

I think surgical competence would be the most important in choosing a surgeon. Based on his over 12 yrs in the medical profession, I feel that he is very prepared to do these surgeries. He seems confident without being cocky.

At the same time, if a doctor is too cold/arrogant or lacking in compassion to LISTEN to you, your body etc...then, he could miss important things.

Yes, Dr. Weiss is young. BUT, he has been in the medical field for more than a decade. He's also had the latest training. That counts high in my book too. A surgeon could have 20 yrs of doing these surgeries but then, they're 15 yrs behind in the latest training...

These are all just my opinions, based on a lot of research and my personal experience with Dr. Weiss and his staff thus far.
I'll update more when I've begun the approval process.

I had my surgery, lap RNY on 10-1-03 and I have to say that I would recommend this entire program to anyone. The doctors are caring, attentive and very thorough. I felt very well taken care of and monitored in the hospital and the aftercare is bar none. There are monthly support meetings AND weekly ones, and anytime I've had any questions, the team members are there to help.

I really can't think of anything negative to say about the program. They're organized and informative and I just feel very lucky that I found them.

I attended the Georgetown Hospital seminar and I was very impressed with the professionalism and interest of all of the staff and Doctors. They had a very informative power pt show and afterward both Dr.Weiss and Dr. Oldham came to the front and answered all questions from a group of about 100 prospective patients. One thing that really impressed me was that both Surgeons operate on all of the patients as a team! Both are expert at laproscopic surgery and do not do open proceedures.

I recently attended an informational seminar/support group and I was very impressed with the surgeon and his staff. They were all very nice.

Dr Weiss is a very personable doctor. He is the greatest. My impression of him only gets better over time. His staff is great Jo and Cathi have had the surgery before (but with other surgeons since he wasn't local at the time of their surgeries) so they know what all of us are going through. I don't think there is anything to dislike about Dr Weiss. Dr Weiss believes very highly in aftercare. You have 1 week checkup and as of right now, I know of 1,3,6,9 month and 1 year checkups. Yes everything about the program in Georgetown is structured. He has informational seminars to address the risks of surgery to a group. Then the day that you meet with him and get your surgery date, he goes over the risks again. On a scale of 1-10, Dr Weiss is a 100. Everything about Dr Weiss is great. Ask any of his patients!
