I am an RN (16 years) and have worked with more physicians than I care to remember. I found Dr. Borao to be respectful, knowledgeable, patient, consistent in his answers and recommendations and a really nice person. My impression of him has not changed over the year that I have known him. The office staff is generally very nice and helpful although one did speak to me rather condescendingly. Another yelled at me when I was working desperately to attain medical clearance that was then denied because of high blood sugars. (Since then, I have good interactions with those two individuals.) I found Dr. Borao accessible--I didn't even have to jump through hoops to get past a pitbull secretary to personally speak with him (in my past experience, that is sometimes more than a little difficult). Dr. Borao tells you what you need to know when you need to know it regarding aftercare; this really helps keep you from feeling overwhelmed. He was forthright about possible complications of the surgery, was very competent surgically, had a truly wonderful OR team who really helped put me at ease when I was feeling most vulnerable and an exceptional bedside manner.
I have only positive things to say about my wonderful surgeon and his staff. Right from the initial call and the first visit, they couldn't have been more pleasant and helpful through what could have been a very anxious time. I have had confidence in them from the beginning. I feel very fortunate that I found Dr. Frank Borao. His office is nearby and so is the hospital. I didn't even have to wait too long for my approval from the insurance company. I am four months postop and I haven't had "ANY" problems. Dr. Borao has made it quite clear that if I have "ANY" concerns at all or questions, not to hesitate for a second to call his office. On one occasion, his office did answer my question, but he called me back anyway. How thoughtful is that?!! And, he's a very busy man!! I wish everyone the best. I have not had any problems with this LAP operation.
Oh, and by the way, I am off all of my meds, depression and blood pressure! YIPPEEEEE!
I saw him on June 21, 2002. I found Dr. Borao to be very informative about the surgical procedure. He spent the time to answer all my questions and go over the procedure from start to finish. I feel totally confident with him as the surgeon. The office staff seemed very pleasant. The one extremely dissappointing moment came when I tried to book the surgery and was told the next available date for surgery wasn't until Feb. 2003. I took it but am very unhappy that I must wait until then, but he is booked!
Dr Borao was very informative and told me every thing I needed to know about the surgery. I was very comfortable talking with him and he didn't rush me out he answered every question I had and thensome. I was in talking with him for an hour. I'd recomend him to anyone. His office staff leaves alot to be desired. They are not very helpful, but Dr Borao is wonderful.
I have my first appointment with him August 10th.
I saw Dr. Borao on August 10th he was very busy but took time with each patient as if they were the only one's in the office. I don't mind waiting when I see how he treats all of his patients.
THe office staff has been wonderful, they have been very helpful even though they are new at some of the insuance stuff.
Dr. Borao was very upfront with risks associated and also was interested in what info I had prior to the visit.
I instantly feel in love with him, Dr. Borao was patient, understanding and explained everything. Said I was the IDEAL weight for a Lap (never thought my weight was ideal for anything)....Since I am a nurse I have a tendency to be a little critical of Dr's. but Dr Borao left me nothing to be critical of, he took his time and never looked at his watch. After having gone to another surgeon first I felt I found the perfect Dr with Dr Borao
9/8/01. I met with Dr. Borao on August 10. I immediately felt comfortable with him. We sat in his office and went over the procedure in details. He spent at least an hour with me, answering any and all questions I had. He seemed surprised that I didn't have more questions myself, but I explained that I had done a lot of research on the Web (and told him about this site) and any questions I had pertained to me directly. After talking with me, we moved into an examining room and he checked some scaring I had from a previous LAP procedure (tubal ligation). He advised me I was a perfect candidate, not only for RNY (for once, being fat was a postitive <g>), but also for a LAP procedure, which was the procedure I preferred.
One of the things I was impressed with was Dr. Borao's personal knowledge of the other surgeons in NJ who perform this procedure. He obviously keeps himself well-informed of the impact this procedure is having on the medical community. He was very quick to praise other surgeons who is feels are competent to perform this procedure.
Dr. Borao only performs one procedure a week. While this means there was a 4 month wait until my surgery could be performed, I knew that would mean that I would have his undivided attention when it was my turn. He also did not hesitate to give me the names of other patients who had the procedure, in case I wanted to talk to them personally about their experiences.
Dr. Borao insists that all perpective patients meet with a nutritionist and a psychologist for complete approval. I have made those appointments and will hopefully have insurance approval by the end of October.
I have needed to call his staff twice now, for basic information, and both times, I have found them to be very nice and helpful.(UPDATE: from recent dealings, his office staff leaves a lot to be desired. I'm not the only one who's had some problems with them, but I have been assured by other patiens that if I need Dr. Borao's help in any way, he is always available). Contrast that with a call to my PCP's office, who gave me a hard time about arranging for medical clearance.
He offers no formal support program,(UPDATE: there is now a support group at the hospital that meets once a month) but I'm not overly concerned with that. Through this web site, I have found others in my situation who can provide the support I need. Having gone through a divorce, and finding that my online support group gave me more strength than anyone in my real life, I'm perfectly okay with this.
Surgerical competence is, of course, a major concern of mine, but it's also important that I like and feel comfortable with the surgeon who operates on me. I have no doubt that Dr. Borao is the best choice for me.
I met with Dr. Borao on Aug.3, 2001. He is so young looking!! I was quite impressed because he was extremely informative. He explained everything from the wonderful success a person can achieve to the possiblity of death (unlikely, but possible). Because I am not exactly 100lbs overweight, but i do have some co-morbidity and family history, he said that I fit the criteria set by the N.I.H.(national institute of health). He also said that I will be the smallest person he has done the procedure on (I guess that is a compliment?)
I look forward to seeing him again about a week prior to my surgery, I will keep u posted when that happens.
