Ernest Rehnke Bariatric Surgeon M.D.,F.A.C.S.
Had my inital appointment with Dr. Rehnke on 5/10/01. He was very pleasant, and took his time explaining things to me. His office staff was polite and helpful as well. He gave me an information packet of what to expect before, during and after the surgery that was thorough and written to be easily understandable. I like the fact that he puts his patients in ICU for the first night after surgery (at least that's what the information states). As a nurse I appreciate that that would ensure close monitoring. The only negative thing I have to say at this point is that he did not go far into the potential negative side effects or risks.
My husband and I met with Dr. Rehnke yesterday. He is a very compassionate appearing man. My situation is a little different. I had HGB done in 1984 with a revision in 1986, so this will actually be my second revision. I know more than I did 17 years ago and know what to ask. I am very thankful to all of you who have posted regarding Dr. R, as what you have said is true.
My surgeon is wonderful. He has a great bedside manner. He makes you feel comfortable. He listens to you and he is caring.
His staff is wonderful. As a matter of fact, we did not have a support group in my area for a long time and he and his staff started one. He attended many of the meetings and now other doctors attend each month this way they can answer any questions one may have on the procdure. I send so many people to him so you know that I really like him. Anyone who wants to go to him should not be embaressed to tell him anything. He is great and so is his nurse practioner. As a matter of fact the entire office is caring. This office is packed.
Like I mentioned before, he takes an interest in all of his patients. He is also a general surgeon and has always had a great reputation. His aftercare program is important and he is the one who started our support groups. He goes over everything and it is up to you what to do. He will only take you as a patient if you follow his instructions and see your family physician, a psychologist and any other professional.
ie: if you have sleep apnea, you must see a
sleep specialist to make sure you will be able to withstand the anesthesia.
I would not go to him or recommend him unless he was competence and had a good bedside manner. Those two ingrediance make for a fantstic doctor and a great surgical experiance.
FEBRUARY 22,2001...I FINALLY HAD MY APPIONTMENT WITH DR. REHNKE. HE WAS NICE AND MADE ME FEEL VERY CONFORTABLE. I CAME WITH A LIST OF QUESTION WHICH HE PATENTLY ANSWERED. I WAS VERY SATISFIED WHIT ALL HIS ANSWERS. THE OFFICE STAFF WAS VERY FRIENDLY AND KIND. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO HAVING THE SURGERY DONE BY DR. REHNKE. NOW ALL I HAVE TO DO IS WAIT FOR THE PAPER WORK TO GET DONE AND APPROVED. PATTY IS PUTTING THAT ALL TOGETHER. HOPEFULLY I WILL HAVE THE SURGERY SOMETIME IN APRIL...
I MET WITH DR REHNKE ON 12/22 FOR THE FIRST TIME. HE WAS WONDERFUL AS WAS HIS STAFF. HE EXPLAINED THE WHOLE PROCEDURE TO ME INCLUDING WHAT THE INS CO WILL REQUIRE. EVERYONE IN HIS OFFICE WAS GREAT, THEY HELPED ME WITH GETTING ALL INFO NEEDED. HE REFERED ME TO DR LINDSAY FOR THE PSYCH EVAL WHO WAS JUST AS GREAT. KIND AND COMPASSIONATE. THEY ARE TRULY A GREAT DUO. WE HAVE JUST SENT ALL THE PAPERWORK TO THE INS COMPANY AND ARE WAITING FOR APPROVAL TO SET A SURGERY DATE. I AM KEEPING MY FINGERS CROSSED.I WAS ALSO INVITED TO THE SUPPORT GROUP MEETINGS FOR BEFORE AND AFTER SURGERY PATIENTS WHICH MEETS ONCE A MONTH IN ST PETE. I MISSED THE ONE FOR DEC, AND JANUARY BUT I WILL DEFINATELY GO IN FEB. I WOULD RATE BOTH DRS A 10 (AND I CHECKED THEM OUT THOUROUGHLY) I THINK THEY ARE TOP NOTCH.
My first impression of Dr. Rehnke was that he was an extremely busy guy! Lots of activity in his surgical office! His staff seemed to be quite capable and accustomed to dealing with "large" patients (I didn't hear any gasps or "Oh My God's") He answered all the questions I asked in terms that were easy to understand. He addressed the downside of having surgery (not just weight loss surgery but any type because the risks are the same). He told me blood clots and infection were my two biggest enemies but that all precautions would be taken to help me through the surgery and the recuperation afterward. I wish he would have spent more time discussing the time immediately following surgery and what could be expected but I sensed he had a great many people waiting their turn to see him. I had a bit of a "jump" on him because I had attended 2 support group meetings prior to actually meeting him and had alot of my initial questions answered by those who have "gone down the path before me." He does have monthly support group meetings that are chaired by his nurse Julie, Dr. A. Lindsay (neuropsychologist) and when able, Dr. Rehnke, himself. These meetings have proved to be invaluable to me...........its like having a weight loss surgery encyclopedia at your disposal! Once I receive (note the optimism) approval from Blue Cross/Blue Shield I will have another appointment with him to discuss surgery dates and procedures. We applied to approval on Monday, 1/29/01 and hopefully should know something in the next 3 weeks or so.....
Overall, I feel comfortable with my choice of a surgeon, with the competence of his staff and with his ability to perform this surgery safely and with his patients best interest at heart............ I'll keep you posted as to the progress!

Oct.00 Called and talked to two offices Dr. Rehnke and Dr Muir. Dr. Muir office sent me out a beautiful package right away of information and questionair, and told me their appointment setter would call me within the week to set up an appointment for sometime in April for the FIRST appointment with Dr. Muir. As of yet almost 3 weeks later I've not heard from them. The lady in the office was polite and answered my questions.
I then called Dr Rehnke office and they set up an appointment right there for Jan.11.01 Answered all my questions and the nurse Judy even called me that night to answer a question the receptionist didn't know. They also sent me a package, not much information but comphrehivsive to what to do and would need for my first appointment. I called as soon as I got it and got my questions answered right away.
I then went back to the web site and studied the responses of the patients for Dr Rehnke and Dr Muir. I also checked their liciense information with the state of florida <both excellent>. I decided on Dr Rehnke for several reasons, the least of which is that the I can get my surgery perhaps 6 months sooner with him. But rather that all his patients are so happy with him and his competence. I emailed quite a few and all sang his praises.

Saw Dr Rehnke today, his office personel were very nice. Judy, his nurse was very professional and sweet to me. Maureen who sets the appointments was very friendly and we had a great chat. The Doctor was relaxed and friendly and answered all my questions.I had all my papers ready and they seemed to think I would be in surgery by the middle of feb. We wait now on the insurance company.
