Ernest Rehnke Bariatric Surgeon M.D.,F.A.C.S.
Dr Rehnke is a great surgeon, he has always been patient, informative and supportive. I had a band to sleeve revision and I am already loving the difference. He has a thorough preop diet and post op. Post op diet is kind of a beast 2 week clear, 2 week full, then food but if you stick at it it will be worth it. Dr rehnkes nurse checked on me the next day, then I got to see both dr Rehnke and his nurse day the day after. Always found his bedside manner great.
My surgery was 12/17/13. I am now 13 days post gastric sleeve surgery and could not be happier with how everything went. His staff to the hospital staff was really terrific. I am so please and delighted at how easy this has been. Minimal pain at the incisional sites The two weeks has gone so quickly on the clear liquids now onto full liquids. I have had an excess amount of gas and my intestines are in hyper mode and the loose bowls are beginning to become normal again. But all in all it was a very easy experience and I was on my feet the day after surgery with no time spent down except the day of the surgery. I do not have a weight loss since the pre-op diet but soon. I did lose 7.5 pounds on the clear liquid protein diet before surgery but not a total since this journey started with the pre-op diet so it has been just three days short of a month that I have had anything solid or soft to eat!!!!! It is the 30th and I began my pre-op diet the third of Dec. It has gone so fast.......I want to thank Dr. Rehnke for his superior expertise and his great staff that made this all possible. I would also like to thank the Palms of Pasadena Hospital staff like Alice S., Ken, "G" and the lovely nurse from Lithuania(the beautiful blonde) the nurse in ICU and the girls who came in from the doctors to check on me.....thank you all for taking such good casre of me. Jill
Dr. Rehnke is why I finally had the nerve to get lapband. I was so scared and had researched it with other doctors for a few years. He is knowledgeable, smart, sincere and positive. I have lost 110 lbs in 28 months and couldn't be happier. He always says I did the work with the help of a tool but having such a caring doctor makes all the difference. I don't even mind driving over an hour one way to see him. If you are considering WL surgery, I strongly encourage you to see Dr. Rehnke. He really did help me get my life back.
Dr. Rehnke has a fabulous bedside manner and is a wonderful surgeon. I had no issues with the pre-op, surgical procedure or post-op recovery. Unfortunately, after about 18 months, the Lap-Band simply failed. Nothing but positive things to say about Dr. Rehnke and his staff in St. Petersburg, Florida at all! If you are thinking of seeing him, do it :)
Dr Rehnke is very nice and informative, listened to all my questions and concerns.
So far I am very satisfied with him. The ony issue I have is that his office is ultra slow in getting things rolling for the approval from the insurance. I am thinking about going to another surgeon thats office personal are more aggressive with getting the requires documents and approvals faster.

What was your first impression of him? Very knowledgeable, friendly, helpful
How did your impression change over time? Grown...I could not imagine dealing with another doctor or staff
How would you describe his office staff? Awesome, they help you out and let you know what is needed, respond quickly, very friendly and helpful.
What did you like least about him? The only negative, which does not bother me more of an observation is Dr. Rehnke will kind of cut you off, he will try to answer your question before you finish asking. I am sure he has heard them all so he just figures out what is coming next. That is something I observed.
What should future patients know about him? He talks very fast, but answers everything and makes you feel very assured in what is going on.
How much does he emphasize aftercare? Very MUCH...that the band is a tool and I have to use it right and that means follow up appointments to get it to the right spot and then check ups for awhile. That every time I get a fill it will be like a whole new surgery over again!
Does he have a structured aftercare program? Post op for my first fill yes, after that I am not sure how many appointments I will need, but he does stress the importance of making appointments when needed, etc...
How did he address the risks of surgery? The staff at the two orientations I went to did a great job of going over the risks. I worry a lot, but I have to take a chance.
How would you rate him overall? Great
Which is better, surgical competence, bedside manner, or are both great? Both are great but I lean more towards surgical competence.
