I met Dr Ren in January for my pre-op consultation. I love her direct, no nonsense approach. If you are someone who likes to be coddled and told that surgery is the "magic pill" that you've been waiting for then Dr Ren isn't the surgeon for you. If you want to hear the truth, that even with the surgery you are responsible for your progress she is wonderful. I'm scheduled for 3/20/03 for lap distal RNY at NYU with Dr Ren.
I first met Dr. Ren in January, 2003. As a registered nurse, I was impressed by her successfull mix of professionalism and friendliness. Yhe office staff was very pleasant. Nurse practitioner was very lovely and put me at ease. The surgeon answered all of my questions, and explained all parts of the surgery and aftercare. I am scheduled for March 20, but my anxiety about the surgery and hospitalization grows every day.
I met Dr. Ren in August 2002, at her
informational session in NY. My
impression of her was of great admiration.
She was so down to earth, great sense of
humor and very warm and nice. Besides having
a great bedside manner, I felt she had such
compassion for everyone in that room. That
was so comforting. I truly believe she gets
total satisfaction from helping obese
people reach their goals. When I went for my
consultation she was very professional and she was
completely up front and honest about the risks
of surgery, but she emphasized there is a huge
risk being so overweight. She also was very
serious about post-op appts. I had the lap-band
so she said a few times, even after surgery, I
want to see you every 4-6 weeks for one
year. Her entire staff was so nice. She's a
brillant surgeon with hands of gold and I
would recommend her to anyone.
Like all of her patients, I think Dr. Ren is fantastic. Although she is quite thin, she is incredibly understanding about the difficulties that obese people deal with on a daily basis. She was straight forward, explained all of the risks, explained everything and answers her emails within 12 hours!!!
The people in her office are patient, intelligent, kind and dilligent. They return every call and email, and work hard to take care of any question/issue/concern.
Of course, the statement below is necessary, but alarming. But, as a law student, I respect the necessity for disclaimers, so here's mine:
It is common sense that everyone reacts differently to certain situations, and that people walk away with different impressions. Considering the gravity of this procedure, I don't think ANYONE should just take the word of all of us on the site. Check the surgeon out. Are they affiliated with a university? Have they published papers? Have they had to go up in front of the medical board for disciplinary issues? Speak to his/her patients. Goto the info sessions. DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!!!!
This site is a great way to find out about the procedure, insurance and surgeons. BUT, we are only sharing our experiences, and I have found them astoundingly valuable, but, I'm not a Dr., I'm not a lawyer (yet) and my comments are only meant to reflect my experience. It's common sense, but I don't want to be liable, and I certainly don't want this site to be sued, because it provides so many people with help that to lose it would be a real loss.
My first impression of Dr Ren was that she cared about her patients and she was extremely upfront-no BS. She is very direct about all aspects of surgery.
So far everyon ein the office has been great.
Dr. Ren has a nutritionist on staff that you also meet with every office visit. The nutritionist is knowledgable and really wants to help you with your needs and concerns.
I would recommend Dr. Ren and her staff 100%. I was scared going into surgery but felt I was in competent hands. Both her surgical competence and bedside manner were terrific.
Dr. Ren made a great first impression on me. She carefully interviewed me about my concerns with my weight. She gave me lot's of information both written and spoken and the thing that I appreciate most is the fact that she gave me phone numbers of patients who are compatible with me so that I can ask specific questions. Example: How is Christmas eve in a hispanic home after surgery?
My impression has not changed over time. Her office staff was kind and helpful. She did not emphasize aftercare so much.
Well, I read a disclaimer which I had to sign. It pretty much informed me of the risks related to any surgical procedure.
As of this date I still rate her an A+.
Both surgical competence and bedside manner are extremely important.
I went to Dr. Ren's informational seminar with my husband last night. Both of us were very impressed with both Dr. Ren and her NP, Gio. I have an appointment with her psychologist, Dr. Huberman on Jan. 29th. After he is sure that I am not psychotic (lol), then I will make the appointment with Dr. Ren. I went to the meeting last night with a lot of good recommendations, both from my support group here in Middletown as well as from the people here at this web site. Anyway, I feel like I've got the ball rolling and can't wait until I can update with great news!! Take care, Carol
Dr Ren was Dr Michael Gagner's fellow and is much loved by her patients. Many of the patients listed on Dr Gagner's site actually had their surgery done by Dr Ren. She helped Dr Gagner pioneer the lap technique.
I called the office and was treated wonderfully by the receptionist. I asked to speak to the insurance dept with a question I had and she put me on hold and connected me directly with Dr Ren. Dr Ren took 30-45 minutes to answer all my questions and agreed to work with me even though I am from Michigan and would not be able to travel back and forth.
Dr Ren is very understanding and totally accessable. Gio is such an assett.
She has an aftercare program now and has meetings once a month at NYUMC.
Her website Click here for NYUMC Surgical Weight Loss Program It is one of the most knowledgeable sites out there.
After researching WSL for a year now and cooresponding with many, many surgeons I feel totally confident with my choice.
Everytime I have a question, I email or call her. I get prompt responses.

I have had a positive expierence with her office so far I really don't know what to expect, but I have an appointment for consult on 11/12-2002@ 1pm.
11/13-2002 My surgeon is the best doctor in the whole wide world!!!!! I went in and her
staff was wonderful and when I got to sit down and talk to her it was simply amazing the bedside manner this woman has! My nutrionist Barrie was awesome anwsered every question I had, and took her time making sure I understood everything. Dr.Ren was like I have cancellation on Nov.22nd do you want it? I was like oh my goodness thats too fast so she gave me a date for 12/13/2002. I am ecstatic! She puts a strong emphasis on after care and is a stickler for "the rules" as far as eating.
