My first impression of Dr. Carlin was that he was very professional and very confident in his abilities. My first impression has not changed. He absolutely knows what he is doing. He treated me and my husband with the utmost respect. He was never adverse to answering any of our questions nor was he ever in a hurry to leave the office until we were completely satisfied with our understanding of all procedures. Dr. Carlins office staff is very helpful, however I think becoming quite overworked and overwhelemed due to the rising popularity of weight loss surgery. But never have I been treated poorly due to the business of the office. Future patients should not be hesitant or have fear of talking to or consulting with Dr. Carlin. Matter of fact, I have already recommended Dr. Carlin to another future WLS patient. As for the aftercare program and risks of surgery, I think H.F.H. has one of the most complete and up to date programs availble to WLS patients. Aftercare is highly stressed and followed to ensure the best and speediest recovery. All the risks and benefits are completely covered and whatever may be lacking is always explained without hesitation when asked. On a scale of 10...and since no one is perfect except for our savior Jesus Christ...I give Dr. Carlin and H.F.H. a 9/10. Both the surgical competence and bedside manner AND THE BARIATRIC FLOOR NURSING STAFF are wonderful. I truely don't have any negative comments about my surgery, or my hospital stay, or my doctors visits. The only drawback I would have is that Dr. Carlins office is very busy and sometimes the wait is quite long. But the caring of the staff and Dr.'s is great.
My appointment was at 3:00, and they were running about 1 hour behind. Then, there was a mix up with my paperwork. The medical ass't who took me in wrote all my info on someone else's paperwork, and vice versa. So, it was a bit disappointing, and very scary at that point.
After spending just a few minutes with Dr. Carlin, I had no doubt that I would be in great hands. He was very honest when answering my questions about what to expect and the changes to come. And he was very genuine and sincere in discussing why he went into this field of work when I asked.
Initially I was disappointed in the mix up and delays caused by some of the medical staff. But, also somewhat understanding, since there were many of us there. After all, they are only human.
I can't say enought good things about Dr Carlin. He really has a no nonsense attitude about weight loss. He has a great bedside manner. I can tell that he doesen't do this just for a living. I know that he is really concerned about the morbidly obese. The program at Henry Ford is VERY structured. At first it was overwhelming, but I know now that the reason for it is so that you will succeed. There is only one problem that I have with their office...almost everytime that i try to call I have to leave a voice message and wait for a call back. out of three times that I have had to do that there was once that I never got a call back. But that is my one and ONLY complaint. I would definitly choose Dr Carlin again.
From the beginning I liked Dr. Carlin. He didn't sugar coat anything (no pun intended)He told me exactly how it was going to be, but he never talked down to me, like I was some kind of idiot. I am an educated woman in a professional industry and he never made me feel less than important. Even when talking to the staff and floor nurses, he called them by name and took time to talk with each on a personal level.
His program is very structured and addressed every question with an emphasis this being only a tool in which to reach a goal.
I would recommend anyone to Dr. Carlin based on both his sugical competence and bedside manner. Both are equally important to me.
I was hesitant to go to Henry Ford for my surgery and to have Dr. Carlin perform it since I work at Beaumont Hospital. But the moment I met him, I knew everything would be okay and that he was a wonderful doctor and person. I was immediately at ease. He took his time and answered all my questions. I did not feel rushed in any way. Wanda and staff are very understanding and helpful. I had to switch insurance to get approved and they were helpful every bit of the way. Aftercare is VERY IMPORTANT. The surgery helps you become thin and healthy, but ultimately it will come down to you and your commitment. If you dont follow the rules, you could end up at square one after the surgery saying, "That surgery doesn't work"! That's because you didn't do what your supposed to. If you follow all the advice, you will have a positive outcome. They help you every step of the way, including the 4 hour nutritional and informational class to be completely sure that you and a support person understand everything. So far they get an excellent rating!
I met Dr. Carlin 6/16/04 and was very impressed with him. He seemed very knowledgeable in his field. The office staff were very nice. Dr. Carlin is a no nonsense Dr. he is very polite and straight forward. He answered all of my questions as well as asked me a few questions. He has a strict before and aftercare program. He addressed the risks of the surgery very well and made it to where it could be understood by anyone. I would rate him very good from a scale from 1-10, I would rate him to be 8.
I had made my mind up that I wanted my surgeon to be Dr. Carlin's partner. I had met him before and liked his sarcastic personality. So when I heard that Dr. Carlin saw afternoon patients instead of his partner, I was dissapointed since I knew I'd have to make my appointment for after work. Mind you, I had not even met Dr. Carlin at this point. Well, at my consultation with him I ended up really liking him. He's very easy going and I felt extremely comfortable with him and confident in his surgical skills. The staff was wonderful. They were kind, pleasant and efficient. You can tell they really care about their patients. I can't think of a single thing I didn't like about Dr. Carlin. This program is extremely thorough both before and after surgery. You must have a psych eval, medical clearance, meet with the exercise physiologist and lose a certain amount of weight before surgery to make for a better surgical risk & decrease the fat on your liver. They also have you attend a 4 hour orientation with the nurse and the dietician, to which you must bring your significant other or support person. I brought my brother. Another thing you must do is write a letter of intent to the surgeon expressing your knowledge and understanding of the surgery and the lifestyle changes necessary afterwards. I can't rate him overall yet since I have not yet had my surgery, but the bedside manner so far is excellent and I have heard nothing but good things about him and his staff.
My first impression was he looked like a very nice and caring gentleman.
I continued to feel very comfortable with him.
The office staff wasn't very nice really
There was nothing I didn't like about him.
Unfortunately he has left that office and I don't know where he is now.
Well they were kind of new with it so aftercare was kind of non existant.
They probably do now that they are more advance with it.
That is was a very risky procedure but that the success rate was excellent and worth it.
Excellent
Both were great.
Dr. Carlin is a sweetie! He is very soft spoken, friendly and so very kind. I liked him the minute I met him and my opinion of him only got better. It is rare to meet someone , much less a doctor, that has such a love for humanity. And I think he is a very talented surgeon. Everyone involved with the Harper Bariatric Program was swell. Dr.Carlin explained the risks at a two hour consultation/seminar. There were plenty of questions and answers, plus he recommends all pre-ops attend the support group meetings.
As far as the aftercare, Dr. Carlin did see me twice for follow up appointments but he left the particulars about diet and exercise up to the program dietician and exercise physiologist. My bloodwork had to be performed by my Primary Care physician. I did think that was a little odd.
Alas, Dr. Carlin has moved to head up the Bariatric program at Henry Ford Hospital so I now see his former associate Dr. Webber.(He is also a great Doctor.)There are few doctors who have both the skill and the bedside manner of this lovely man. I rate him a 10 or whatever is the best!
