My first impression of Dr. Dan was that he was genuinely concerned about my inquiry into bariatric surgery. As time went on, I found out that he is genuinely concerned for his patients. He is very honest about the pro's and con's of surgical procedures and makes sure you completely understand everything prior to your surgery date. His office staff is very caring and always available to answer any question you may have. I definately would recommend Dr. Dan to anyone. He is a very talented surgeon, and very personable. His bedside manner is as good as his surgical talents. He and his staff are very supportive, friendly, and welcoming when you meet them in or out of the office setting. The program is very good, the goal is that every patient knows all about every step of the process. As a patient, I was very comfortable post-surgery, knowing what to expect, and what I could and could not do. The staff is to be commended for the education provided prior to surgery as well as prior to leaving the hospital. The support group is a help to any post surgical patient to help reinforce the new lifestyle as well as for suggestions how to deal with the new life. I would rate Dr. Dan a 10--as far as I am concerned, there is nothing that he could have done better than he did. I appreciate his skills, support and encouragement.

Dr. Dan is the most wonderful caring person I have met in a long time. He is very positive about all aspect of the sugery and the after recovery period as well as the long term follow up. rnI have always thought Dr. Dan was a wonderful physician and my opinion hasn't changed since I first came into contact with him.rnrnAll of his staff are very compassionate and very concerned about your welfare. Any time I have a question they are there to answer them for me and very quickly. They are friendly and very professional.rnrnI haven't found anything about Dr. Dan that I don't like and I would recommend him to all my friends and family in fact I have recommeded him to my friends and family looking for a surgeon.rnrnDr. Dan emphasizes aftercare from the very begining of the program and makes sure that all your questions are answered. The aftercare program of the Center is extremely well structured to ensure that you are progressing the way that you should.rnrnI would give Dr. Dan an A+++.rnrnDr. Dan's surgical completence and bed side manner are both great.rnrnI will say that I disgree with the paragraph below as I believe that Dr. Dan and all of the Summa Bariatric Center staff are 100% wonderful. This is my own personal opinion based on my experience with Dr. Dan and his staff.rnrn rnrn

My first impression of Dr. Dan was how knowledgable he is, and my impression has not changed over time. Dr. Dan is very straight forward, he does not sugar coat anything. Dr. Dan and his office staff are very helpful and they all emphasize aftercare and the office has an aftercare program. All of the risks of the surgery were fully explained. I would rate Dr. Dan high...his surgical competence and bedside manner are great.

First impression: Young! But I suppose that means steady hands... He's fellowship trained and that means a lot to me.rnrnOffice staff: great, especially Robin (reg. dietician).rnrnHuge emphasis on knowledge, preparation. The staff appear to take ownership of our preparation, and don't leave it all to the surgeon. rnrnI liked that Dr. Dan requires more than one face to face meeting prior to surgery, and insists on meeting family if he can. I also like that he did his own endoscopy prior to sx, vs. handing it off to someone else. He was clear and repetitive about the risks - this practice doesn't appear to be a surgery-mill.rnrnI'll have to wait until sx to update on that...rnrnPost surgery:rnrnI lived, and no complications. Dr. Dan was great. The pre-op nurse was terrific, and very funny about how strict Dr. Dan is about his patients' pre-op preparation (the poor woman was determined to get the heparin shot into me on time lest the wrath of Dan descend -- though she was very good humored about it). The head of the OR visited me post-op to let me know there was a recall of some of the equipment used, which I appreciated (this is scarier than it sounds -- some items in the batch had been mispackaged so that the outer packaging was open - and even though it did not affect my equipment, they felt it important that I know). rnrnIn the surgical suite, all of the surg nurses and Dr. Dan were present and calming. I was only awake for a few minutes of course, but you have to stay awake while they get you in position, and I imagine that could be unpleasant if the surgeon and nurses don't have a certain gentle humor about them. I tried to distract myself by commenting on their handmade surgical hats, and they engaged me on that topic, understanding that I needed to talk about ANYTHING other than the fact that soon they'd see me inside out. It made me feel human, and made them human to me. That stuff matters and it is nice that this is what I remember of the immediate experience.rnrnPost operatively, Dr. Dan was apparently very clear and communicative with my partner, explaining that the surgery went well and that he hadn't needed as much extra time as we'd feared (due to anticipated adhesions and a hernia that turned out not to be a hernia).rnrnDr. Dan's nurse (I can't recall if she's an RN or nurse practitioner), Noelle, was great. Everyone was -- but she stands out as particularly warm and helpful while I was in the hospital and for my first week home when I had questions.rnrnThe emphasis on aftercare in this practice is terrific.rnrnOne other thing that I particularly appreciate about Dr. Dan is that he is intellectually invested in bariatric surgery and related care. He is interested in doing research, for example. He is a young surgeon and the fact is that these surgeries are likely to change and develop, and I admire the fact that this man is open to being part of that change and to improving care from good to even better. Having a surgeon who pays attention to the literature and feels invested in bariatric care beyond the immediate task of rerouting parts of the lower GI system seems important to me. This is someone who is paying attention to this surgery in the context of the whole person, and considering the risks and benefits in a way that we should all want our surgeons to do.rnrnI really don't have anything negative to say. I think if you are looking for a warm, fuzzy surgeon, Dr. Dan might not always be like that -- he is warm and interested, but not fuzzy. I don't really like fuzzy in a surgeon -- I like focused and precise. And my experience with the fuzziness might not be yours -- I find that good clinicians/doctors pick up on what their patients respond to, and Dr. Dan probably realized pretty quickly that I didn't need a fuzzy friend, but a competent medical practitioner. Maybe he's fuzzy with other people. Me, I do tease him about all the high-fives (he gets really excited when you lose a pound or something) but hey, I can groove with that. At least he really does give a damn... :-).

When my husband and I met Dr. Dan, my husband's first comment afterword was, \"That is the only humble doctor I've met in my life!\"rnrnDr. Dan is a wonderful doctor, and a wonderful human being. He is compassionate, caring, and provided me with excellent care. He performed my roux-en-y surgery on July 29, 2008. I had some complications during my surgery that he could not have foreseen, however, he handled them expertly, he was upfront with my family, and made sure that I had no problems whatsoever in my hospital stay.rnrnI was impressed by the Bariatric Center at Summa's thorough preparation for surgery, and the efforts they put into getting my insurance to approve it!rnrnI can't say enough wonderful things about Dr. Dan's care. He is the only physician I've ever had that sent me flowers when I was in the hospital!rnrnI would highly recommend his services.

My surgeon was Dr Dan with Summa Bariatric Center. Summa Bariatric Center has a classification of Center of Excellence. He was straight up with me right from the very first visit. My starting weight was 381 and he explained in detail what my life was going to be like without the surgery and what it would be like after the surgery. Because of my many medical conditions we opted to do the SleevernGastrectomy on March 18, 2008. Dr. Dan was a wonderful surgeon for me. Very personable. Answered all of my questions and concerns in language I could understand. Dr. Dan has a complete staff that has knowledge in all aspects of Bariatric surgery. They are all great!rnrnThere is nothing that I did not like about Dr. Dan or his office staff. They are wonderful! I had a great experience with them. I had been researching this surgery and doctors for five years prior to having my surgery. Talking to others that have had this surgery done made my decision to go with Dr. Dan a lot easier. Dr. Dan's office has a complete program, others did not. There are steps in this program that you must follow. I have found that my experience in this program so far (one month post-op) I have received more information and support than others have in their two years post-op by going to other doctors. rnrnDr. Dan had great bedside manners. Which if you have had surgery before, you know how important this is. Even on my follow up office visits with Dr. Dan, he has taken his time with me to make sure all of my questions and concerns have been answered. His staff continues to give me information as I progress to each stage of my eating. They are wonderful! I can't say enough about them. I would recommend them time and time again!rnrnHow would I rate him overall? On a scale of 1 - 10 with 10 being the highest, I would give Dr. Dan and his staff an 11. They go above and beyond the call of duty!! Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful.rnrnI had some problem with sharp stabbing pain from my belly button to my left hip. I called Dr. Dan's office on a Saturday morning, which of course, they are not in on Saturday's but they had an answering service that I spoke with. I want you all to know, Dr. Dan called me back within 5 minutes of me speaking with the answering service. Dr. Dan answered my questions and concerns about the pain. He told me what to do until I saw him in the office on Wednesday for my one month check up office visit. Again, I was very pleased with him getting back to me as quick as he did, I was scared because the pain was so bad.rnrnIf any of you would like to contact me with any questions, please feel free to do so. I would be more than happy to answer any questions.
