The Kane Center Bariatric Center
I was originally scheduled to have an open procedure with Dr. Kane Sr., but Dr. Kane cancelled approx. 1 week before the surgery was scheduled to take place and Dr. Rantis stepped in.
I met with Dr. Rantis the Friday before my surgery date. Dr. Rantis thought that he might be able to do a lapriscopic procedure but said that he wouldn't know for sure until the procedure was started and he got a better chance to assess the situation. Turns our that he was able to do the lapriscopic procedure and I couldn't be happier. Dr. Rantis said that everything went fine and that there were no complications.
Overall I'd have to give Dr. Rantis a 10 out of 10. He was very ernest and forthcoming. He was easy to talk to and most important for me, he was able to perform the lapriscopic procedure.
2/21/03 - Yesterday I met Dr. Guske for the 1st time. He was very nice & very professional. He answered all my questions, allthough I was kind of nervous & forgot half of the questions I had in mind to ask. He's been doing this surgery for 4yrs & he's done over 1,000 of them. He mostly does Laproscopic instead of Open & he said that I'm a good candidate for Lap-surgery. I was very happy with this appt. & I'm ready to continue on. Another exciting thing was when they took my picture for the before and after; I was imagining my self a year from now taking a beatiful after picture. :-)
Dr. Guske is very nice. He was very informative and very patient in answering all my questions. I would definetly recommend him to anyone considering this surgery. I did have to wait one and a half hours after my appt. time before I saw him, but that is expected with any surgeon.
So far, my personal experience with him was very good.
My first impression of Dr. Guske was that he was a very warm and considerate man. At my office visit he forced me to ask him more questions because he wanted me to be well prepared. My impression has not changed overtime. He is very easy to talk to and he still seems concerned for my well being. His office staff is pretty good they are very prompt with the insurance papers. Future patients should be aware that you will be in good hands with any of the doctors with Weight for Life at Alexian Brothers Medical Center. Aftercare is a giant portion of the Weight For Life program the will not let you have the procedure if your aftercare classes are not scheduled. Dr. Paul Guske is an excellent surgeon.
2/1/02 (This review is about another doctor at BTC which I am no longer going to use as my physician....please read below for comments on Dr. Kane) My impression of Dr. Lane was that he was very professional. He took the time to answer the many questions I had. I was very prepared prior to my consultation so I had many things to ask. He was happy to answer my questions.
The staff at BTC was very nice. I did wait about an hour past my appointment time before I was called though.
Dr. Lane was very honest when I asked him questions about the risks of surgery. Of course, everyone is different....but he went through the risks, then detailed what he and BTC does to help you prevent risks so that you have a sucessful operation.
I haven't had surgery yet....actually, I am still deciding. Dr. Lane said that BTC is about 6 months away from being able to do the surgery Laproscopically. At this point...i don't know if I'm going to search for a physician that will do it laproscopically. If anyone can recommend someone in MI...please email me!

2/21/02--Well, today I spoke to someone I met through obesity.com on the phone. What a great help she was to me....thank you!
Also, I've decided that I do not want to have an open RNY through BTC because I was told I'm a perfect candidate for the Lap surgery (which BTS doesn't do yet) I would much rather not have as much pain, or have that big scar if I can have it done Laproscopically. Plus, you are moving around a lot faster...which is important for not getting a blood clot (so I'm told).
I'm looking forward to getting an appointment. I'll update more after I see my new doctor.

3/24/02--Well....I went to a required seminar yesterday and got that out of the way. I didn't really learn anything that I didn't already know, but had to pay for plane ticket and hotel to fly out of state for this required seminar anyway. It's a technicality...but an expensive one.

Got to see Dr. Kane. He does the procedure Laproscopically, and I believe he is the doctor I want to go with. He is very thorough....I can tell by the explanation of the process he follows. He's been doing this for years, and so has his father, so I feel very comfortable with him.

Now, I need to send in my completed paperwork. My situation is unusual though....I've already gotten an approval letter from my insurance company....so I'm ahead of the game. Just need to hear from Dr. Kane's office to find out what kind of presurgery labs I need. :) I'll update more later.

2/18/03--Yes, it's been a long while since I've updated my page. I had my surgery (Lap RNY) on 6/18/02. I'm doing well, although I haven't been able to exercise very much due to an injury. As of today, I have now lost 100lbs, and feel like a totally different person. My clothes are fitting me so much better, and I'm starting to get a lot of compliments on my weight loss. I'm so grateful for this surgery.
I have to say that i am very happy with Dr. Rantis. He has been great from the beginig and is still great. I am not 5 months out and will going to my 4th visit after surgery and i am looking forward to seeing my surgeon and showing him what a great job he has done with me. When ever i have had a problem i call and get answers. He has a great bed side manner and a great sense of humor. I would reccomend him to anyone.
My appointment with Dr. Rantis went very well.He was easy to talk to. He did not rush me through the appointment. He talked in length about the surgery and answered all my questions. He told me not to worry about anything he would take good care of me.I was told I could call the office any time with questions and they would get back to me asap.
I have only met with Dr. Rantis once and that was for about 30 to 40 minutes during the surgical consultation. He explained the procedure thoroughly and took time to answer my questions. He explained the after care but most of that information came from the seminar I attended. I haven't had much contact with the office staff, but the few times I've called they have returned my calls in a very timely fashion and they've always been able to answer my questions.
My only complaint is the time frame it has taken since Weight for Life received my paperwork on 7/29/02 until my surgery date on 2/07/03. Although it has taken many months, all of the people I've dealt with have been very helpful.
I will make my final judgement about Dr. Rantis after surgery and my release from the hospital. I do feel very confident though that I will be in good hands.
My first impression of Dr Guske was pretty mixed, he had an emergency at the hospital and therefore I waited about 2 and a half hours for him to show up to his appointment. I completely understood his delay; however, I was still a little nervous and scared. He profusely apologized for being late (made it all better in my book), just the fact that he apologized for something that wasnt in his control made me realize that he can put himself in my shoes. Then he took about an hour with me explaining everything, he did ask where my "support" person was and if I had one..I explained to him that they had to be at work and he advised me that I could come back again and bring my support person so that they could ask questions. He drew pictures/diagrams of what the surgery was going to do to my gastrointestinal tract and was very straight forward about complications, which I appreciated. I am having the laparoscopic "version" done and was glad to hear that not much more pain was going to along with it, then my previous laparoscopic surgery. YEAH! Dr Guske is associated with the "Weight for Life" program which I have found to be both good and bad. I have dealt with Amy and Tiernay, both of which were nice and friendly and approachable. I have also on one occasion talked to Bonnie about the MMPI testing and was advised (more like yelled at) to send my test to California second day mail. When I sent the test in with the money, Amy called to ask why since she told me to keep it and give it to Dr Davison. I then advised her of Bonnies outburst and request to send it next day air..Amy got Liz (possibly the supervisor out there) on the phone and she advised me that Bonnie was wrong. I informed her that unfortunately, I was very upset with the organization due to Bonnies unexcusable outburst and demand (after I told Bonnie that Amy specifically told me not to send it to California since 010103 they were no longer doing their own MMPI testing) Liz apologized for Bonnies outburst and advised me that they would cash my check and send me a refund - which they did in a timely manner. Otherwise, I believe the whole pre-care and aftercare program is well planned and simple to follow. I have recommended the Weight for Life program to several coworkers that were looking into surgery in this area. Obviously these are my experiences with the program and doctor, yours might be different.
