The Kane Center Bariatric Center
Dr. Paul Guske is a wonderful doctor. When I first visited his office, I had to wait 2 hours to see him. I was pretty upset, but he explained the situation & I calmed down pretty quickly. He was very willing to spend time answering my questions, and just because he was running late didn't try to rush me out of there. He seems able to read people & talks to you at your level - not too condescending or too infantile.
I had some serious complications with my surgery & Dr. Guske's bedside manner made ALL the difference! He is so gentle, caring, patient, and calm. He has the best bedside manner I have ever seen. I believe he is a very good surgeon too, but don't feel as able to judge that since I did have a strange complication. I would trust him to operate on me again.
I must say that in spite of how much I enjoy Dr. Guske, his office staff can be extremely difficult to work with. They don't take what you say seriously (probably because they've heard it all before). They try to do as little as possible for you - like making you call for hospital appointments that the Dr. told them to call on. I have called a few times during the day for serious assistance with wound infections and pain and my messages were not even passed on to the Dr. In the past I have stopped seeing good Dr.s because the office staff is so rude and incompetent. This hasn't happened with Dr. Guske's staff, but if this wasn't such a critical health issue I may have tried someone else. NOT ALL his staff is difficult, there are just some that are sick of dealing with the patients and it shows.
I would give Dr. Guske himself the highest rating possible. Every other patient I've spoken to that has had him has nothing but good things to say.
I thought maybe I would get Dr Kane, thinking he had more experience. But after I met Dr Rantis, I found him to be a very caring doctor and was ready to listen to any of my needs of concerns. His nurse Judy was awesome, very knowledgeable and willing to listen. I can't really think of anything I didn't like about Dr Rantis. He even had the nurse call me at home to see how I was doing. He is very strict on what meds and supplements I should take. All doctors have their own opinions, I respect my Dr,'s opinion for my care. I found him to be encouraging. I did have some complications with bleeding due to the lovelox, but he quickly found the problem and treated it.
I think he is great!
My husband I went to meet with him. He was very honest, and was able to answer any questions that we had. I took his time, and made sure that I knew exactly was in store for me. He has a great personality, and makes you feel as if you are the most important person that he is seeing that day...even though he has so many more. I liked that. The office was friendly, and was effiecient.
I orginally asked for Dr. Kane Sr. since I had seen him about WLS about 10 years ago. After I was approved & went to make an appointment, I was told Dr. Kane Sr. would take awhile to get an appointment with.
I now have an appointment with Dr. Rantis on 3.31.03. I think they all work as a team anyway...so I'm fine with this.
First impression was very good. He patiently listened to and answered all my questions. He seemed very knowledgeable and explained the risks. My visit with him was about 45 min. long so at this time I cannot really comment on Dr. Kane's skills or bedside manner. At this point I am going on alot of trust and faith. I particularly liked the late office hours his practice offers, great for working people. His staff was polite and helpful. Dr. Kane is part of the "Weight For Life" group. Aftercare is a big part of the total program. Dr. Kane and his program is very comprehensive. I've had to have other tests, consultation with other Doctors and support meetings before I was given my date.
When I first met Dr. Guske I knew he was the one. He made me feel really comfortable with my decision and in his ability to preform this surgery. He is a very knowlegable surgeon and a down to earth doctor.
I have also emailed other post-ops who have had Dr.Guske and the comments are all positive one's. I know that I will be in the best of hands.
I am very confidnent that I made the right choice in surgeons......first impressions are everything.

Dr. Rantis was very straight forward in our surgical consultation. I had actually first heard of him through a friend of mine who's sister had Dr. Rantis as a surgeon and she was very impressed with him. Then, when I went to the seminar at Alexian Brothers, Dr. Rantis was the surgeon chosen to speak that day, so I had some experience with his demeanor prior to my appointment. My husband and I both felt very comfortable with him and more at ease after meeting with him. He is very confident, intelligent and honest. Dr. Rantis explained all of the risks involved with the surgery, the importance of aftercare and allowed me the opportunity to ask any questions my husband and I had.
