St. Vincent Healthcare Bariatric Center
I was very impressed with Dr. Gupta from the beginning. I could tell she was very experienced and knowledgeable. I felt very confident with her as my surgeon. I also knew that she has two very good associates to cover in case of her absence. The aftercare was carefully explained to me and I was told I was expected to take part in it if I wanted to be successful. The office staff was friendly and helpful. They were very bust so often I had to leave a message and wait for a return phone call. I was able to e-mail at least one staff who was very receptive to e-mail and that was great. I would recommend Dr. Gupta to anyone looking into WLS.
My first impression of Dr. Gupta was that she is a very intelligent woman. She thoroughly explained what would go on during surgery, what to expect after surgery, the risks, and possible complications. She spoke straight to the point, and didn't sugar-coat anything. She has a friendly staff, and the most comfortable waiting room I've ever seen. If you choose her as your surgeon, you won't be disappointed. She has been great.
My first impression: very professional. Some may view that as a negative, but it definitely reassured me. The whole St. Vincents program demands you stick to a tight schedule of nutrition and supplements for a year following the surgery, as well as regular check ins and follow ups.
Overall, the experience was very positive. I had some relatively rare complications that ended up putting me in the hospital for nearly two weeks, but the surgery itself went without a problem. While in the hopsital, and in fairly tremendous pain, the staff on the bariatric floor went above and beyond to help me, even to the point of special ordering a bed with an air mattress to assist in my pain control.
I'm extremely pleased with the treatment I received and highly recommend both Dr. Gupta and the St. Vincent Carmel hospital eagerly.
Doctor Gupta was very up on her information. She was very informative. It was great to speak with someone who knew so much about her field of study. She looks to be about my age, which comforts me to a certain extent, cause I can relate to her. The staff was very polite, and the gal I have been in contact with on the phone is exceptional. She has a very structured aftercare program and stressed often how important it is to take care of yourself after surgery. I like that. She made me feel as if this is truly a journey she will be helping me make, and I look forward to working with her.
This was the same Surgeon my wife had. Very personable. Answered all of the questions I had, and she informed me of things I hadn't even thought of. Very competent Surgeon with a good bedside manor. Always friendly and upbeat.
Office staff is shared among three Surgeons. There is some trouble getting a person when phoning. And since I live 3 hours away, it takes some time to arrange appointments.
She was a female, and I was nervous during exams.
Aftercare is stressed at St Vincents. This group has extensive support group support, and even an exercise class for patiants. They even have a support group in Ft. Wayne about 3 hours away, and they are starting one in South Bend, also 3 hours away.
A very structured system of food portions, and how long at each step. Prescription drugs are monitored, and will be reduced or eliminated when no longer needed. The need for vitamin supplements especially B-12 is stressed at each post Op follow-up.
During the initial group meeting, and consult, Dr. Gupta informed us of the risks associated with surgery, and about the special risks we obese have.
Overall, Dr. Gupta is a very good surgeon, and is genuinely concerned with the patient
I feel Dr. Gupta is both a great surgeon, and has a good bedside manner.
Dr. Gupta seemed very nice and very intelligent. My one concern was the amount of time you actually get to speak with her one on one. Carmel St. V's had you come in for a group consult afterwhich you meet with the Doctor. Since Dr. Gupta didn't have any information that I hadn't already learned online and my medical history is pretty boring, my actual visit with her only lasted about 5 minutes. She hasn't been doing the procedure herself for very long, but I feel everyone has to start somewhere. Plus the fact that the partners in her practice are well known and they wouldn't take on anyone who wasn't highly qualified. Her after care program seems very strict and she places a lot of emphasis on nutrition and group support. They also have you take a test the day of the consultation to see if you understand the commitment that you are going to be making and the risks involved.

Dr. Gupta has been great! I have needed to have 2 scopes performed and she has done both. Her bedside manner can be a little abrupt at times, but much less so then a lot of doctors that I have delt with. I would highly recommend her to others. I am not real happy with her nurse, Sue, who sometimes treats you like you are an idiot when calling. She also takes her good old sweet time about returning your calls.
She is extremely friendly and very knowledgeable. The only thing is they are so overwhelmed with patients that everything is done in a group atmosphere, and you get the don't call us we will call you... if your are approved. You also have to submit your own request for approval, which working for a doctor's office myself I did not find very patient friendly. However, doing the finling myself gave me the opportunity to get letters of referral from all of my physicains, and write a person request, which I beleive is why I was approved on the fisrt request. I cannot wait to have my adte scheduled, and look for to working with Dr. Gupta. She seems to be a perfect match for me-lap rny only, female, non-judging, very concerned about aftercare etc., and extremely honest.
