Approximately 300,000 people per year die from weight-related medical diseases such as coronary artery disease, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, or a combination of these. rnrnWe know that obesity is not a character flaw or willpower issue, contrary to past misperception. It is a disease resulting from our modern society, which is fast-paced, discouraging time for exercise or healthy eating. Not only do we not seem to have the time to exercise and avoid fast, carbohydrate-rich food, there also seems to be a genetic correlation with obesity for many. It is NOT as simple as pushing away from the table, or putting your fork down. The problem is much more complex than that, as anyone who diets knows. rnrnOver 10 years ago the NIH Consensus Statement on Obesity found that people with Class III obesity (greater than 100 lbs overweight or Body Mass Index* of 40 or greater) failed at the conventional diet methods available, but were most successful with a combination of bariatric surgery and a comprehensive, multidisciplinary postoperative program, including diet, exercise and behavioral modification. rnrnThe term \"Morbid\" obesity comes from the knowledge that a certain degree of overweight (BMI > 40) will cause premature death, shorter lifespan. In fact, being obese is now the second-leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. Number 1 is cigarette smoking. rnrnMorbid obesity is the last socially accepted form of discrimination, and those who suffer, not only have physical health jeopardized, but endure many psychological and social adversities as well. rnrnIf you've tried and failed conventional dieting, don't lose hope. Surgical treatment with Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass may be the answer. rnrnThe Surgeons at Carmel Surgical Specialists have successfully performed weight loss surgery on nearly 2000 patients and nearly all patients have had their surgery laparoscopically within the last year. We are affiliated with the St. Vincent Bariatric Center in the Carmel, Indiana hospital, where our patients are followed carefully after surgery to ensure the best outcome. rnrnDr. RoseMarie Jones, Dr. Brenda Cacucci, and Dr. Christine Gupta are member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgery and American College of Surgeons. rnrnAt Carmel Surgical Specialists we recognize bariatric surgery is a major, life-enhancing procedure for seriously overweight patients. It carries both risks and benefits. We can help you reduce the problems you've faced as a result of morbid obesity and help you live a healthier, happier life. We strive to help bring together a world of experience and resources for individuals in need. rnrnThe decision about whether to undertake Bariatric surgery is complex, intensely personal, and very important. A decision to undergo a bariatric surgical procedure is a decision to change your life in a dramatic and irrevocable way - there is no such thing as too much careful consideration rnrnOur surgeons carefully select candidates for surgery based on physical and emotional criteria. Almost all patients are candidates for the laparoscopic approach in our experience. You will be asked to attend a seminar where you will get a basic education on the procedure, and have a one on one consultation with your surgeon. After your preliminary visit your surgeon will write a letter of medical necessity to your insurance (where applicable) and at that time, the process officially begins.rn rn rn
I chose Dr Gupta because she took really good care of a friend of mine. The first time I met her she was very nice and took time with me. I wasn't just a number to her. She did a great job with my surgery and my after care. My husband had complications and she was right on top of his care. I can't say enough good things about her. I highly recomend her to anyone thinking about bariatric surgery.
Dr. Gupta is WONDERFUL!!! She is so caring and understanding. She took the time to answer all of my questions at my consult, and then patiently answered my husband's questions right before I went into surgery.rnrnThe office staff at Carmel Surgical Specialists are is equally WONDERFUL! I've not had a bad encounter with anyone, and I've had considerable contact with them while I was trying to get my wls pre-approved.rnrnThe after care program through the St. Vincent Carmel Bariatric Services office is top-notch. Their holistic approach to taking care of yourself post-op is second to none. The post-op program will take you through one year post-op, and you can always call the dietitian any time you have questions.rnrnThe dedicated bariatric floor at St. V Carmel is also second to none! The staff there are solely dedicated to taking care of post-op bariatric patients. I was treated with kindness, compassion, and respect.rnrnI highly recommend Dr. Gupta, Carmel Surgical Specialists, and the St. Vincent Carmel Bariatric Services program to anyone who is considering undergoing wls!!!rnrnUPDATE 3/17/07: While I still think highly of Carmel Surgical Specialists, I do not think highly of Dr. Gupta. She wouldn't treat an ulcer I had, so I had to find my own gastroenterologist to treat them (I've had several over the past two years), so now she's written me off. So IMNSHO, if you're looking for WLS services from Carmel Surgical Specialists, stick with Dr. Jones or Dr. Cacucci.
Dr. Maier was very interested in my expectations regarding my surgery and how they compaired with his. He was very informative and gave me all the tools I needed to achieve a positive outcome. He worked very intently with the Weight Management Clinic of Billings Mt. and their outstanding staffrnand program. After much research to find a program that met my high expections of success, I found the Weight Mamagement Clinic to have what I believe the best program in the Nothwest. This is confirmed by their outstanding postop aftercare program. They addressed in detail the risks of surgery but in detailing risk the program also gave me the tools to minimize that risk. Dr. Maier was an oustanding surgeon in every aspect. I would recomend him to anyone that needs attention to detail and professionalism.rnrnSuzanne Brewer
Dr. Gupta is a wonderful doctor. She is upfront, does not \"sugar coat\" anything and is very caring. The facility St Vincents Hospital of Carmel is the best hospital in the state in my opinion and the way the bariatric center is set up there is impicable. If I ever need anything from her or the staff there, I KNOW that I can go to them for the rest of my life.
First impression....Dr. Gupta has great drive and passion for her work.
Her staff was very helpful and friendly.
